dabbe One of my favorite shirts I loved to wear to school the day we would start reading a banned book (like CATCHER or OF MICE AND MEN) had “I teach banned books“ proudly worded on the front. 🤩😍😘 2w
DebinHawaii @dabbe That is awesome! 👏🏻 2w
ImperfectCJ I like reading lists like this. I feel compelled to point out, though, that the article got the name of the narrator of Lolita wrong (it's Humbert Humbert, not Herbert Humbert). 2w
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks 🧡🧡🧡 2w
Eggs Yeah! Humbert Humbert is much more dramatic than Herbert Humbert. Probably a spelling “correction” from the almighty algorithm 😁 2w

For someone who‘s terminally single, I actually really love Valentine‘s Day. I think it‘s all the hearts and flowers and pinks and reds.

Anyway…here‘s my #Bookspin list. Some of these titles are pretty appropriate for the season, I think.

The story concerns a young married woman, the former Constance Reid (Lady Chatterley), whose upper-class baronet husband, Sir Clifford Chatterley, described as a handsome, well-built man, is paralysed from the waist down because of a Great War injury. Constance has an affair with the gamekeeper, Oliver Mellors.

I think I have a better appreciation of this, having read it with others for #sundaybuddyread, and I‘m happy to have read it… but too much of it just seemed to be written just to be inflammatory without enough substance in the primary, surface-level plot for me to like it. Plus just far too much talking to appendages rather than to people… 😵‍💫 thanks for the push to check it off the list, @TheBookHippie 😅

wanderinglynn Totally off topic, but I just sent you an email about HHS. Let me know if you didn‘t get it. 7mo

#RushAThon #4in20 #readathon

Finished for #SundayBuddyRead & while I‘m glad I finally read it (after picking it up in high school & then putting it back down unread) I didn‘t enjoy it. I found Lawrence‘s writing overwrought & all over the place & while I admire his social commentary & daring to write this book in his era, no character is likable & the sex scenes it was banned for are not sexy. The best part of the book was the weekly discussion.

AmyG The sex scenes are cringeworthy. 😬 7mo

So, if you feel like you've wasted your time with this book, that it's just a bunch of people doing things with no real purpose, congratulations: you get it. With the breakdown of the social structures of aristocracy, marriage, and even nationhood, there's no clear path for people to follow.

#SUNDAYBUDDYREAD
We‘re more well read now… 🤣
Honestly the sex part was graphic or whatever but I don‘t think that‘s the point of the book- at all.
You?

vonnie862 I know the book heavily focuses on sex but I also see it as a commentary with self discovery. 7mo
vonnie862 And yes, we're very well read 😬😬😬 7mo
vlwelser The sex was definitely not the point. This actually sort of reminded me of Hemingway and those lost generation books. Like they have no idea what to do with themselves. 7mo
See All 37 Comments
TheBookHippie @vlwelser I love Hemingway‘s prose way more than this. But yes, similar situational writing. 7mo
vlwelser Specifically The Sun Also Rises. And the prose is so different. Plus way less sex in Hemingway. Unless the bulls are a metaphor. 7mo
TheBookHippie @vlwelser HA. He loved Bullfighting if anything he‘d have done a metaphor to fascism with the bulls. As for sex Ava Gardner swam naked in his pool for him just for fun and he had many wives and conquest so didn‘t need to write about it ! 🤣👀 7mo
vlwelser True. The ones that talk about it most are getting the least, right? I know very little about Lawrence. But he had TB or something. Maybe Clifford is autobiographical. 7mo
TheBookHippie @vlwelser I‘m with @AmyG I think he was gay and hating himself for it -therefore hating everyone else 😬🥴 and trying to prove his heterosexual ways by writing sex badly I think it‘s why it doesn‘t hit romantic or sexy … and yes generally those who talk most get least. I believe he did have TB as well. 7mo
vlwelser Maybe he felt impotent or something. Or sick. And has a crush on his nurse. There is either something else going on here or he's just really basic. 7mo
TheBookHippie @vlwelser I like we the readers have to literally intemperate every damn word 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫 and they‘re worried someone‘s going to read this mess so they ban it?! It‘s why people read it 😬 to see what‘s so bad. Ha. 7mo
AmyG So many of his sex scenes felt off, cringworthy. But I agree with @vonnie862 about self-discovery…for Connie, at least. She stood up to Clifford and made a decision she felt was best for herself. Ha, not that she is the best at decision making (she DID marry Clifford). @TheBookHippie Ha…I think it was banned because of the penis chat and C word. 🤣 (edited) 7mo
IndoorDame I did wonder if his being a gay man kept him from having the insight he needed to write such an interior story about a straight woman‘s take on sex and relationships… but plenty of gay men do that well and Mellors take on relationships was just as insane and infuriating, so it‘s probably not anything so generalized 7mo
AmyG @IndoorDame Mellors, jeez, he was such an odd guy. 7mo
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame true, and I agree it was all infuriating ! Even the dad 😵‍💫. 7mo
IndoorDame @TheBookHippie omg, I know he was supposed to be all genuinely and supportive but the dad drove me crazy!!! 7mo
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame ‘What in the world‘ was my comments every-time I read passages with him in it .. 7mo
mcctrish Honestly I feel like DHL had to be gay. Every single male character said something about other men that ( considering all the euphemisms about sex) I wondered if they were saying that they had male lovers at some point ( army, school, life) and while I know there were/are serious repercussions for coming out - no fucking wonder women weren‘t keen on sex with them 7mo
IndoorDame @mcctrish I think Mellors said that pretty blatantly. I think he was likely most written as bisexual, but I got the impression that the person he‘d really loved had been a man. 7mo
TheBookHippie @mcctrish SOMETHING is UP 😵‍💫🤣 I agree it was eluding to something he could not write about for fear of prison … 7mo
mcctrish @IndoorDame @TheBookHippie I‘m not crazy 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 7mo
Cuilin I just read a sentence from the New York Times, which said Lawrence is homosexuality may have been repressed which turns nasty. That says it all. 7mo
TheBookHippie @Cuilin this was my point earlier - I think he hated himself because of it and is spot on for how it feels to read this book! 7mo
TheBookHippie @mcctrish if you‘re crazy so are we all 😉 7mo
Cuilin @TheBookHippie yes, the self hate comes through in his writing characters that are so unlikable!! 7mo
BookwormAHN Or I was wondering if he wrote Connie as if he was imagining himself as a woman and doing it badly. 7mo
TheBookHippie @BookwormAHN that‘s a thought !!! Hmmm 7mo
mrp27 Everything about this book was unlikeable but so glad I read it. He had a lot to say and it is well worth a discussion. 7mo
DebinHawaii Never a waste of time with this group! I always learn from the discussions even if I don‘t like the book. I am glad to have finally read it & I now understand why I picked it up & dropped it quickly in high school! 😉 7mo
TheBookHippie @mrp27 I agree. I‘m glad we all read it together though! I learned from everyone! 7mo
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii It‘s all clear now! 7mo
Larkken @BookwormAHN that was my impression - I feel like he shouldn't get credit for "the female gaze" if it's just that he was only interested in the man's body ? 7mo
Larkken I'm so happy I read this with others! I think I would have gotten little from it on my own and just been confused about the bad sex. At least this way I was looking for the subtext about the impotency of the aristocracy and change in class structure with industrialization. 7mo
TheBookHippie @Larkken I so agree I‘m so glad we read it all together. 7mo
Sargar114 I agree, reading it as a group was much better. I think Lawrence had some interesting perspectives while really needs to work on his characters and overall story. I think as a teenager or high schooler it‘s very easy to miss some of those points due the distraction of the terribly described sex. 7mo
TheBookHippie @Sargar114 SO so terrible … 7mo
mollyrotondo I really enjoyed reading this lol I don‘t like romances so I was thrilled to find out this is not a romance 😆 loved this whole portrayal of people feeling lost after the war because the class structure had crumbled and everyone had to catch up to it‘s destruction. Still hate Mellors and Clifford and definitely don‘t see this as a female gaze book when it comes to sex and personal growth. If it was Connie would have left for good with her sister 7mo

Ch 19

So Clifford refuses divorce
Plays with his nurse🥴

Connie comes back grabs her personals with Hilda and goes to Scotland

Mellors works a farm

A letter

The end

Wait WHAT?!?!

The book is supposedly written in the style of :

THE MODERN CONDITION
https://www.webpages.uidaho.edu/engl_258/modernity%20&%20existentialism.htm

vonnie862 That was such an unsatisfied ending! A letter saying a lot of words with little meaning (in my opinion) 7mo
vonnie862 I had to cringe at Clifford's behavior:rubbing himself on Mrs. Bolton like a child. At first I thought they were going to get it on but ummm... 7mo
vlwelser Clifford and Bolton omg 🤢 7mo
See All 25 Comments
vlwelser And that letter. I thought that was basically typical for the book as a whole. Are we supposed to want more? I just didn't care about any of these fools at the end. 7mo
IndoorDame I agree about the writing style. And I think leaving the ending so open does play into the despair Lawrence has been exploring and underscore the massive flaws of all our characters, but making the reader do ALL the interpretative work is cruel and counterproductive 7mo
AmyG @vlwelser Want more? I was happy it ended. I didn‘t really like anyone in this book. They are all so freaking needy and dramatic. Edit…..and entitled. (edited) 7mo
TheBookHippie @vlwelser @AmyG *reads last page yells out loud OH FOR FUCKS SAKE … my son “Finish the book?” 😵‍💫😵‍💫🎯 7mo
vlwelser @AmyG so glad it's done. Would this book even be a thing if the book banners hadn't had such a fit about it? 7mo
vlwelser Your son clearly has you figured out. 😂 7mo
AmyG @TheBookHippie My sentiments exactly. 7mo
mcctrish Well this book is bang on modern condition !! Clifford won‘t divorce her means her child can inherit ( I hope it‘s a boy 👏🏻👏🏻) and some new blood into that hellhole although he‘ll probably divorce her on his death bed. Everything about this book is painful, they banned it for the wrong reasons 7mo
TheBookHippie @mcctrish 🎯🥴🥃 7mo
TheBookHippie @mcctrish I thought that too! I hope it‘s a boy and he dies before divorcing her 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 7mo
Cuilin @mcctrish I said the same thing!! Banned for the wrong reasons!! 7mo
TheBookHippie @vlwelser 🤢🤮🤢🤮🤢🤮 7mo
IndoorDame The other thing that bothers me about the ending… Mellors gets divorced. Awesome. His wife is a shrew and they hate each other, makes for a terrible marriage. But haven‘t they both completely abandoned a little girl at grandmas and moved to new towns? And why has no one mentioned this? He‘s planning to have another child? I wouldn‘t let this man near my child! 7mo
BookwormAHN @IndoorDame I agree. He's already proven that he sucks as a father, and what if it's another little girl? Also, the ending, I was just glad it was over. 7mo
mrp27 Agreed, so unsatisfied with the ending! All this drama for nothing?! Lawrence certainly proves he can‘t please a woman. So I guess Mellors and Connie really do love each other? Dunno about that. Still feel their relationship is destined to crash and burn. Clifford and Bolton 🤢 wished Bolton was the conniving villain I pictured her to be in my mind. Clifford behaved exactly as I thought he would about the divorce. Ugh. Horrible people, all of them (edited) 7mo
DebinHawaii Where even to start?! I agree with all of the above. Also, I think my face is permanently stuck on “cringe” expression mode thanks to Lawrence & especially the last section of this book… 😬 7mo
Larkken I thought the letter was the only romantic thing Mellors ever said to Connie. Weird to have that during a celibate period when the book is all about the power of sex in a relationship?!? But then I accidentally listened to an abridged version so maybe I'm not getting the full effect 😇😅 oh no? (edited) 7mo
Larkken @IndoorDame oof right? yuck 7mo
Sargar114 Honesty, it was a happier ending than I expected. However, Clifford‘s reaction completely makes sense. Him refusing the divorce is his way of exerting control over Connie, this situation, and life that he otherwise has no control over. 7mo
TheBookHippie @Sargar114 Right? Control. Ugh. 7mo
mollyrotondo @IndoorDame exactly! He has a daughter he doesn‘t see. He‘s going to make a great a father to Connie‘s baby though? Yeah right. I don‘t think this letter was romantic at all. He‘s like well we can‘t have sex so I guess this will have to do for now. He‘s not passionate at all. Just because you like sex doesn‘t mean you are passionate. And I was also extremely weirded out by Clifford and Bolton 😬 7mo

TheBookHippie @Sargar114 SO GROSSSSS! 7mo
mollyrotondo I was so disappointed in the dad. I liked how he sounded in the beginning of the book. But then at the end he took on the pervert father role. Discussing his daughter deserving good sex 🤮 and Mellors and him sort of hit it off which made it clear that yeah Mellors is gross and the future of men is gross entitlement to sex and giving it to a woman. Venice 🇮🇹

She did not mention her pregnancy even to Hilda
And now she‘s sorry-
Did we know she was pregnant and I missed it?! 😵‍💫

Mellors wife …. And the scandal and ruckus of it all
And the letters and Clifford ….
And …WHEW

Duncan
The artist
Another character to not like …

Whelp what do we think of Venice ?

vonnie862 Ok, I was not the only one. I was like, "Wait, when she get pregnant? Did I miss that?" It's almost like D.H. Lawrence was not too sure about the process of women's bodies so he just happened to sneak that in thinking it would make sense. 7mo
vonnie862 I felt sorry for Mellors when his wife returned. She sounds like a joy to be around with. 7mo
vlwelser It seems like she was hoping she was pregnant right from the beginning. But it's hard to take Connie seriously. 7mo
See All 30 Comments
IndoorDame We sort of knew. She talks about feeling pregnant so early I dismissed it at first because I don‘t actually believe people who say they feel differently as soon as they conceive, but then she keeps talking about it all along so I assumed it would be a real part of the plot. This was the first chapter where she actually says she knows for sure though. 7mo
AmyG I knew she would get pregnant so I wasn‘t shocked. All they talked about was her getting pregnant by someone else so…who else could it be but Mellors. And yes, his ex was a horror. (edited) 7mo
mcctrish I think right after the sex in the woods? Mellors thought it was miraculous cuz they climaxed together #howitshouldbebutneveris #menhavenoroletoplayinwomensorgasm 🙄 and Connie says something something something aka must be pregnant and DHL maybe doesn‘t know the science of conception totally 🤷🏻‍♀️ Mellors ex is his own damn fault #reapwhatyousow 7mo
TheBookHippie @mcctrish did you miss the memo men are not real men unless they make the woman climax and if it‘s the same time you get a cookie … 7mo
mcctrish @TheBookHippie totally missed it 🤣 7mo
Cuilin @TheBookHippie @mcctrish this whole chapter regarding the climax highlights how ignorant DHL is regarding women‘s sexuality. I‘m a little embarrassed for him. 😳 😂 7mo
mcctrish @Cuilin I mean if you are going to get banned for sex, know what you are talking about 🤣🤣 7mo
IndoorDame Was I the only one who was furious that she left Michaelis for his rant about women climaxing solo, and then went Mellors goes off about the exact same thing she lays there silently and then decides she‘s in love with him!? 7mo
TheBookHippie @Cuilin RIGHT?!?! 😵‍💫 7mo
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame SO INFURIATING 🤦🏻‍♀️ 7mo
TheBookHippie @mcctrish He needs a copy of Our Bodies Ourselves 😉 7mo
BookwormAHN @IndoorDame I was cringing during all of that 🤦🏼‍♀️ 7mo
mrp27 I figured she‘d get pregnant. Lawrence gets so much wrong about sex!! I laughed so many times at the ridiculousness of his sex scenes/sex talk. At the same time I was so infuriated by the whole climax together bullshit. Initially I thought Bolton spilled the beans of the affair to Bertha. She wasn‘t a pleasant character either. 7mo
DebinHawaii @mcctrish Yeah, for a novel banned for the sex scenes, there was not one that actually was in fact sexy. Most of them made me cringe. @TheBookHippie “Our Bodies Ourselves!!!” 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I choked on my coffee when I read that! 7mo
Larkken @IndoorDame ugh all the mens in this book are total ugh-fests about women and what to do with them. 7mo
Larkken @DebinHawaii “not one that was in fact sexy” 💯 7mo
Larkken I was annoyed at Connie (more than usual?) by the angst that wouldn‘t allow her to enjoy a single thing about the journey or the view or Venice. Blerg. 7mo
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii FOR REAL cringe … and well 🤣🤣🤣 glad to have made ya chuckle! 7mo
TheBookHippie @Larkken @DebinHawaii not one sexy thing … 7mo
TheBookHippie @mrp27 I wondered that too, did Mrs Bolton talk?? 7mo
mrp27 She had to of. Why else would Bertha show up out of the blue to create all that drama? 7mo
TheBookHippie @mrp27 Agreed! Did she secretly love Mellors ? 7mo
mrp27 I feel like she had the hots for him! 7mo
TheBookHippie @mrp27 Me too! 7mo
mollyrotondo @IndoorDame yeah that‘s what I said last week! Mellors says the same thing about climaxing that Michaelis said. Just because she adhered to this ridiculous fantasy with Mellors makes it better? Connie did the complete opposite from what I wanted her to do. Go find yourself!!!! 7mo
mollyrotondo When Connie finds out that the rumor is going around that Mellors‘s wife is back causing trouble and stomping around and says Connie is sleeping with her husband, Connie then starts to regret sleeping Mellors. She says she wouldn‘t want to have his baby and would be embarrassed to say the baby is his because she wouldn‘t want to be associated with a man who married a woman like his ex. She totally becomes repulsed by being connected to Mellors. 7mo
mollyrotondo So to me that proved Connie doesn‘t love Mellors either. She just wants something different. She acted irrationally and now is stuck with Mellors. She will be miserable with him in a years time. 7mo

Ch 16

Hilda arrives
Meets Mellors
And WOW she‘s a bit uppity 😵‍💫classism much?!

One last night together👀

Registered letter from Canada…

What do you think of Hilda ???
And phew…. Goggles for a disguise?

vonnie862 I think Hilda is a hypocrite. She's all about fighting for the working class but feels that her kind should not get themselves involved with them. However, I was not surprised at her reaction on finding out about Connie's lover. I too would be irritated that I can't go straight to my trip if my sister wants to make a pit stop for sex. But I was not ok with her dislike of Melllors. 7mo
vlwelser Obviously the goggles make the disguise really effective. It seems like Hilda is more annoyed with Connie than anything else. I would be. She wants to get going on this trip. I also hate ridiculous delays. 7mo
TheBookHippie @vlwelser I do not do ridiculous delays well… I‘m sure you‘re just shocked 🤣😬 7mo

IndoorDame They basically anticipated exactly what did happen so I couldn‘t quite tell how much she was just baiting her sister cause…sisters, and how much it was sort of play acting the wider world‘s reaction in a safe space. 7mo
AmyG Yes to all you said! Hilda just seems impatient with Connie in general…yes, sisters. She is the uppity person who likes to fight for the “regular” guy…makes her look like a decent person….yet would never trade in all she has for the world. (edited) 7mo
mcctrish @vonnie862 bang on!!! It was all about getting to spend the night and then every reason why spending the night was not an option came true. I actually liked this part because it all made sense ( and was basically timeless in terms of clandestine affairs ) fastest moving part of the whole book. Connie is basically a teenager ( see further chapters for proof ) 🤣🤦🏻‍♀️ 7mo
TheBookHippie @mcctrish 🤣🤣🤣🤣CONNIE is so immature … basic teen angst 🤣🤣🤣🏆🎯 7mo
IndoorDame @mcctrish Connie is basically a teenager! That is the ONLY part of her infatuation (“love”) that I find believable 7mo
mcctrish @IndoorDame and all the reason one needs to tank their life 🤣🤣 7mo
BookwormAHN I sympathized with Hilda. I mean, come on, her married sister is slumming it with the married game keeper, and they can't start their trip because they have to spend one more night together 🤷🏼‍♀️ 7mo
mrp27 Hilda was a complete hypocritical snobby arse. I get her anger towards Connie for an unnecessary delay. Connie‘s relationship absolutely feels like lust and infatuation as opposed to real love. 7mo
DebinHawaii Hilda was my favorite before the ugly classism, now not so much. (I don‘t think I have a favorite character in this one!) I do understand her annoyance with Connie wanting to delay & choosing Mister over Sister. That would annoy me too. 🤬 7mo
Larkken The classism was a surprise. At first I wondered if she was just being protective and making sure Mellors likes Connie/has anything in common with her other than sex/ do they ever talk about anything other than physique? But yeah by the end she‘s insufferable too. 7mo
Larkken @mcctrish @IndoorDame @TheBookHippie I had a hard time reconciling the “woe is me my womb is drying up” with the basic teen-girl infatuation. Enjoy your damn holiday already. 7mo
mcctrish @Larkhen apparently DHL can‘t apply his usual insufferable wordiness to Venice and the joy of travel 🤣 7mo
Sargar114 @DebinHawaii I agree, I don‘t think there is one likeable character in this one! 7mo
mollyrotondo I was on Hilda‘s side over Mellors‘s side. Yeah she was being classist but she had every right to dislike Mellors. He was completely rude to her. He said such degrading things to her. If he loves Connie (which I don‘t believe for one minute he does) then he‘d at least be respectful to Hilda. He was rude to her from the moment he saw her. He doesn‘t love Connie. He just loves being an ass. And Connie made me mad by siding with him over her sister 7mo

vonnie862 Ummm...this chapter... I was confused if Clifford really wanted Connie to return from her trip while I was annoyed with Connie's whining to Mellors. Though I did giggle at how they put flowers all over each other. 7mo
vlwelser This was all over the place. The whole book is all over the place. 7mo
IndoorDame SO much more than I anticipated. I‘m shocked by how little I remembered from my first read, and by how different my reactions were this time. 7mo
See All 22 Comments
IndoorDame @vlwelser all over the place kind of covers it 😵‍💫 7mo
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame this was not what I remembered AT ALL! 7mo
AmyG All over the place, indeed. @vlwelser My main thought with this book is everyone is so freaking dramatic. And I wondered if Clifford was gay. 7mo
mcctrish All. Over. The. Place. 7mo
TheBookHippie @AmyG SAME!!! 7mo
IndoorDame @TheBookHippie @AmyG me too!!! But it seemed a bit on the nose to write both Clifford and Mellors as queer in a novel with such a small cast. (Also very racy at the time!) 7mo
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame it was like he was testing the waters .. 7mo
Cuilin @AmyG I had that same thought about Clifford too. He doesn‘t seem bothered about his impotence regarding Connie. 7mo
IndoorDame @TheBookHippie I think that‘s it exactly! When I wasn‘t busy being full of rage, I kept thinking as I was reading how it would have read to queer men at the time… and as much as I hated this, we couldn‘t write the things we do now without people pushing the envelope forward. And he was a bit part of that. 7mo
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame I do think there is value in this book for many of the issues explored and IN PRINT and still to this day we discuss it, it moved us to think, discuss, argue and move forward. It isn‘t pretty but it did do the job he probably wanted- people to see how the world was changing .. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 7mo
BookwormAHN Agreed, this is a small book that packs a big punch even if, at times, I wanted to punch it. 7mo
SamAnne I think I liked this classic more than others. I did hate Lawrence‘s lens on women, but I appreciated the snapshot, view of how war and industrialization were upending social structures of the time, class structures. 7mo
mrp27 At this point I still couldn‘t really tell if Mellors was into Connie outside of sex. Surprised how indifferent Clifford is towards Connie while at the same time so fearful of her leaving him. As said above what a mess this chapter/book/characters are. 7mo
DebinHawaii I find myself both cringing & rolling my eyes at much of this chapter. Oh the drama! @AmyG I wondered about that too! 7mo
Larkken @vonnie862 I liked the flowers too! It was unexpectedly sweet. 7mo
TheBookHippie @SamAnne I learned more than I thought I would and I enjoyed learning more about the coal industry. I liked the snapshot too. 7mo
TheBookHippie @mrp27 It was a whole mess! 7mo
mollyrotondo @SamAnne I also liked this book a lot. I thought the discussion on industrialization and changes after the war were really insightful. Also agree with @mrp27 that I could not see Mellors as in love with Connie but more about the physical relationship with her. I see no romance in this story. 7mo
mollyrotondo The flower weaving into the body hair is the only “affection” I saw in their relationship lol 7mo

This book is such a muddle. Some passages of truly beautiful prose & lucid insight into the human condition, marred by a terribly ugly & reactionary worldview that made me feel trapped by a heavy sense of desolation as I read it. It's definitely a glimpse into the tortured psyche of D.H. Lawrence. But ultimately what comes through is a general hatred of people, especially "weak" people, & the types of difference that make people human & flawed.

batsy Thanks to the #SundayBuddyRead for giving me a reason to read a book that's been on my shelves for so long. I've enjoyed the discussions & it helps to see what others make of it. I liked the searing criticism of industrial modernity & its excesses & brutalities, but couldn't reconcile it with Lawrence's general aversion for anyone that wasn't pure, whole, able-bodied, with a sexual mysticism rooted in heterosexuality. 7mo

I can see why this book was banned with all of the sex scenes. Even I was surprised of the details it had for that time period. I really liked D.H. Lawrence's comments towards sex, gender equality, social class, and industrialization. What I was not too fond of was of Connie and Clifford. They irritated me.

Having made copious notes, where do I start to sum up my thoughts and feelings? I was surprised there was no firm final tragic parting of the lovers, as the text occasionally seemed to be leaning and which I think historical classics are often guilty of.
I feel like as forward thinking as Lawrence may have been in his day, he's so far behind where we are now in relation to sex and gender that I can't sing his praises. 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? I am glad that his challenge against the soul-crushing, polluting industries of his day was out there for all to read, similarly his painful repetition of instances of classism indicating how destructive such a system is. 7mo
Robotswithpersonality 3/? Connie and Oliver are flawed, but they work as object lessons of how a society set up with certain roles and expectations does a disservice to all involved, whether they act in accordance with the rules or try to step outside them. Oliver and Clifford also distill how wretched wars/conflicts/military's effect on humans is. 7mo
Robotswithpersonality 4/4 My gut instinct that many historical classics decided to present their message via the medium of misery is holding steady, unfortunately, and it's not my preferred reading.

⚠️Ableism, classism, racism, antisemitism, SA, spousal abuse, misogyny, transphobia (in A Propos after word)

A distillation of the rest of the novel: some good points buried in a bunch of antiquated attitudes I can't get on board with.
Fighting back against piracy of books such that artist gets his due royalties 👍🏻

Not bowing to censorship because his book says what it need to say in exactly the words used👍🏻 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? Pushing for open awareness and understanding of sex and the importance of intimacy instead of being ashamed of sex while also robotically engaging in it in a pantomime of what it might be like if you were either invested in your partner's emotions, or at least their pleasure 👍🏻

Live in the body, find significance in daily rituals, passing of the seasons, don't make it all about the mind, some good, earthy pagan vibes, community over individualism, fighting against classism 👍🏻
7mo
Robotswithpersonality 3/3 And there's some other junk related to that sanctity and power of sex and traditional values and heterosexual marriage and the Church and phallic symbolism that he kept whinging on about that I won't give space to here

Probably a result of public outcry, but interesting that this afterword/addendum addresses the themes on sex in the book but not so much those on the travesties of class and industrialization

⚠️Transphobia

Yes it's Saturday. Sorry #sundaybuddyread , just need to be done with this one.
Notes for Chapter 15 to End.
Final Review will come after reading 30 page A Propos from author found at the end of my edition (maybe every edition? 🤷🏼‍♂️)
Notes:
WAY too obsessed with the symbolism and imagery of genetalia around power and liveliness vivacity, an offshoot of toxic masculinity?
1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? Kinda feels like Connie's a little too selfish in seeking her own purported ends to unhappiness to properly comfort/confront Oliver in his depression

I appreciate the originality in a lengthy passage on weaving flowers into pubic hair
7mo
Robotswithpersonality 3/? I understand that he's not in a position to have thought his way through (Lawrence seems the type who could think it over and come to a more enlightened conclusion if he lived in a different era) to modern fight against/ lack of gender norms, but what's on page is often so traditional, it really knocks me out of the narrative 7mo
Robotswithpersonality 4/? Oliver: code switching as method of emotional self-defense

Hilda driving sister to lover's cottage, sitting for meal = Most awkward family meal EVER

Hilda so used to taking care of sister, even into adulthood, Connie so used to her taking action, like neither can get out of the pattern
7mo
See All 7 Comments
Robotswithpersonality 5/? I'm glad she's forthright enough to look after her sister's interests, and I don't appreciate Oliver's misogynistic retorts about her character, but Hilda was definitely being incredibly rude, classist and presumptuous about the level of control she would have in someone else's affairs

The reality seems to be that society has set up these two people to be contemptuous of each other - Oliver not taking any of Hilda's crap, Connie seems to want to ignore the class divide/tension and yet seems to think what Hilda said was Ok?
7mo
Robotswithpersonality 6/? Respect Hilda for not settling for a partner who would not share life equally, didn't treat her well, but that doesn't mean I condone her steamroller censorious attitude towards Connie

Didn't realize the 'determined to/performance of enjoying oneself' when on holiday has been going on that long Negative description of sex work 🙄
Menopause getting the blame for woman's erratic behavior 🙄
7mo
Robotswithpersonality 7/7 Sex as natural - versus society's strictures, even today in certain circles, which are appalling - yet the version of sex positivity seen here often doesn't feel very positive! More objectification and expectation.

Feel like everybody would be a lot happier if they'd had the conversation on 276-277 a lot earlier

Championing tenderness, good, yes.

Didn't see that end coming!

mcctrish @Litsi some clever people in the #sundaybuddyreads group explained why the book has important things to say re:end of Victorian Era and commenting on industry etc.. but I can‘t get over how much of Lawrence‘s crap overshadows it ( racism, anti-semitism, anti-feminism - actually it‘s like he hates women ) 7mo

I was surprised at the number of socioeconomic issues raised by this book, including class prejudice, sexism, the evils of industrialization and wealth disparity. I found the book to be a bit boring, and every character annoyed me - they were all so self-centered. But I admire Lawrence's ability to make us think about the issues, which are still relevant a hundred years later. ⬇️

julieclair I can see why the book was a shocker when it first came out; there are frank discussions of sex throughout the book. I can also imagine that readers at the time may have missed some of the socioeconomic themes being portrayed, because of the novelty of the sex theme. While I cannot say I enjoyed this book, I am glad I read it. Thanks for choosing this for #SundayBuddyRead , @TheBookHippie ! #192025 #1928 @Librarybelle #TBRTarot @CBee (edited) 7mo

Ch 12- 14 Notes
Amazing how easy it is for a character to decide that sex is absurd or undignified when they're not enjoying themselves. Amazing how easy it is for intimacy to get tangled, maybe it's an ace view, but Connie seems to be having a sadder time because she's convinced intimacy might come from sex, rather than being a reflection of an existing intimacy. 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? and otherwise an act which may be devoid of feeling, or at least not continuing warm feelings, if you're still basically strangers with your chosen partners. No wonder she vacillates between fear and awkwardness when it comes to the act.
Of course it helps if they're actually checking in with each other, and I think in this time period it was all too likely the lady was expected to lie modest and silent while he pounds away, which Mellors not too gracefully later takes issue with.
7mo
Robotswithpersonality 3/? Connie's one-sided concerns, felt like an extension of classism, bit hypocritical considering her later spat with Clifford; she despises any mannerisms that speak of Mellors heritage, any indication that he doesn't act toward her as a gentleman would, and yet wants him constantly to show he cares.
She seems to crave intimacy while being unable to offer it, does she just not know how?
7mo
Robotswithpersonality 4/? I admit to having a little trouble with Mellors slipping into the colloquial dialect, does NOT make the sex scenes any better.

Clifford blustering on for pages trying to make the mess his family's made of Taversham, the disparity in income, the 'work or starve' model seem fair and orderly: fated. Blech.
7mo
See All 9 Comments
Robotswithpersonality So strange to thoroughly enjoy the pastoral cottage core moments of nature described between domestic drama and social commentary. 7mo
Robotswithpersonality 6/? Episode with the chair having issues and Clifford remonstrating with the keeper who'd been ordered to help and then dictating the form such help should take ... Connie's somewhat snide repetion of Clifford's earlier talk: The most blatant metaphor of the 'they need us a lot more than we need them'. Feels borderline abelist having it bound up in a mobility aid but that doesn't change how shitty Clifford's attitude was, even if his initial frustration is understandable. 7mo
Robotswithpersonality 7/? And then there's Connie out the gate with the antisemitic analogy. 🫣 7mo
Robotswithpersonality 8/? That whole detailing of Mellors sexual history just seven levels of awful - SA in one side, emotional abuse on the other - the whole period of history with women lying back and thinking of England and the various shitty ways men might react to it - compounded with a bit of the standard 'if I can't get her off she must be a Lesbian' and resenting her for not orgasming during penetrative sex which I believe research suggests physiologically is the most difficult form for those with a clitoris/vagina? Period typical doesn't make it any less rough to read. 7mo
Robotswithpersonality 9/9 I understand the reasons for these not particularly healthy relationships being the focus, how interpersonally on an intimate scale and as a metaphor on the greater stage of society it has a lot to say about the times it was written in, but that's not going to stop me disliking their persistently miserable state. 🤷🏼‍♂️ 7mo
batsy Yes, I agree. I don't know enough about Lawrence at the moment but the book seems to reflect some of the ugliness of misogyny that comes through quite strongly, despite an attempt to give voice to a character like Connie. 7mo

Your thoughts ? What do you think women reading this in the time it was written thought?

I‘m sure I missed things what did you get from this weeks reading ? The classism sexism is a wow… but not unusual and yikes still today.

Sargar114 This was the section where I thought “oh this is what the fuss is all about.” Haha. While I never agree with banning a book, I can see why the sex scenes can be distracting from the many larger topics being discussed especially for a teenage mind. 7mo

Sargar114 @IndoorDame I do agree she needs to get out of it all together. 7mo
vlwelser Definitely run Connie run. That's a perfect conclusion. If only she does it.... 7mo
mcctrish Banning for the wrong reason imo! 🤣🤣 #runconnierun 7mo
TheBookHippie @mcctrish I want a T-shirt RUN CONNIE RUN 👀😅🤣 7mo
OriginalCyn620 I agree! I think Connie needs to get away and just clear her head! 7mo
mcctrish @TheBookHippie I‘d buy it and wear it 7mo
batsy Run, Connie, run would be my advice, too. There is a sense of her being trapped and she is definitely searching for something "bigger" than her current life. 7mo
vonnie862 I'm actually surprised how "graphic" the book is for its time. 7mo
vonnie862 Though divorce was a thing in the UK during this time, not many people did it. Connie wants to run but at the same time she's stuck, especially with the lifestyle she's used to. If she runs away with Mellors, I feel that she will quickly get bored and come to resent him as well. 7mo
mrp27 I think it was definitely shocking for the time. For the sex of course but also the frank talking about it. I wonder if people shocked back then about the social/class commentary. I want to put in a pre order for the run Connie shirt. 7mo
julieclair I agree that readers back in the 20s/30s may have been so distracted by the sex that they missed the other issues being portrayed in the book. But I also hope that the book made women of the time think candidly about their own sex lives and attitudes towards sex. 7mo
DebinHawaii I am with you on the Run, Connie, Run tee-shirt !🏃🏻‍♀️😂 I can see why I never made it through this one decades ago. While I appreciate how shocking & ahead of it‘s time it was/is, it just isn‘t doing it for me.😵‍💫 7mo
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 team shirts 🤣 It‘s definitely forward thinking on many subjects but then so backward in others… it‘d be a great physcology sociology class discussion! 7mo
mollyrotondo Definitely want the Run, Connie, Run tshirt 😂 I think she needs to go to Venice and forget all about Clifford and Mellors. I don‘t want to see her runaway with Mellors because she will just feel stuck in a different way. I‘m so glad we read this because it‘s so much more than a “sex book”. 7mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I know that history is full of misogyny, class struggles, and pearl clutching, so I came for the smut. I'm not impressed. I feel like continuing an affair should bring you some joy, as juxtaposition to the guilt and/or shame. There's none of that nuance here. Once they're together, there's no passion. No love. No desire. Maybe it's the way it's written, but I just don't find anything likeable. 7mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I do think whether it's the 1920s or 2020s, the word c**t makes many people bristle, and that's why it's one of my favorite words. 😁 7mo
TheBookHippie @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I agree! Where in the world is the PASSION?! 7mo

I have no memory of this book and I certainly don‘t remember this much sex in it. That being said, it doesn‘t read as a romance novel to me not -that I read romance ever -but isn‘t romance happily ever after? I can‘t see that here… you? I can‘t even see happiness, love or true desire of connection do you? Is sex the only thing they both control? Other thoughts ? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Vansa It's not meant to be a romance novel, anymore than Jane Austens are meant to be romance novels!Lawrence's preoccupations in this book,as with most of his other work, are how people who were born into a time when Victorian mores were prevalent, were trying to figure out new ways of living,in a world where class barriers were dissolving, women had the vote and more of a voice, but also facing the trauma of a devastating war. 7mo
TheBookHippie @Vansa I don‘t think so either but it fascinates me people put it in this genre. 7mo
Vansa I very much saw true desire and more importantly, true connection.Mellors and Connie genuinely discuss things, and her opinion and feelings are important to him and not dismissed out of hand. She is given agency, something a lot of purportedly “women's fiction“ writing now don't give their female protagonists.
I hope women reading it at the time were encouraged to consider their sexual pleasure as important as men considered theirs
7mo

TheBookHippie @Vansa I hope it gave the women food for thought at the very least . Most women‘s fiction I can‘t stomach 😬. 7mo
Vansa @TheBookHippie 😂😂a lot of it is very self indulgent! 7mo
Sargar114 I agree this doesn‘t read like a romance. It feels like a lazy way to categorize it because they have sex. And you can only have sex if there is romance involved, duh!!!! 💁🏼‍♀️ 7mo
Vansa I found the love story very moving.Specially Mellors' letter had me in tears- a lot of times I am surprised by Lawrence's ability to write scenes that are both sexy and sweet at the same time, this letter being a perfect case in point. The use of 4letter expletives to describe flowers blooming is so unexpected but just so imaginative! Both literary and profane. And the ending of that letter again-both sexy and sweet. 7mo
AmyG I sometimes wonder if they fall in love….Mellors and Connie. Not too sure. The sex talk makes me chuckle. It‘s so candid….yet so very backwards (the way they talk. Dated). (edited) 7mo
TheBookHippie @Sargar114 🤣🤣🤣🤣 7mo
TheBookHippie @AmyG SO DATED. 7mo
Vansa @Sargar114 they have a lot of conversations as much as they have sex! 7mo
IndoorDame I agree that it was never meant primarily as a romance. And I‘m not finding anything romantic in it. But I think anything with a woman as the central character and a sexual subplot was basically always going to be classed as a romance novel when this entered the canon (maybe still is). 7mo
Sargar114 @Vansa oh I think they have more of a relationship than just sex, but like @TheBookHippie mentioned Romance novels generally feel like there is a sense of happiness and pleasure. And while we have the pleasure here, there is more of an overall sense of tragedy knowing that they likely will never have the “happy ending” that at least Connie wants 7mo
Vansa @Sargar114 oh ok! You meant the classification as a romance 😄I'm still holding out hope for a happy ending 6 months down the line for them!! 7mo
Sargar114 @Vansa exactly! I agree it feels like Mellors and Conor care for each other and are a good fit, but doesn‘t feel like a romance novel in the modern sense…I suppose it‘s a classic though so maybe in that sense it is 7mo
vlwelser It's basically just sex or talking about sex. I also remember nothing about this. Maybe it's just not that memorable. Maybe it's just that there's so much hype about it. Would this even be on anyone's radar if they hadn't made such a fuss about it? 7mo
TheBookHippie @vlwelser I remember NOTHING🤪😅😵‍💫 and no probably not. 7mo
Vansa @Sargar114 I wouldn't call it a romance novel either. I'm sure Lawrence would be startled by the classification as well! And probably disappointed that most people just dismiss it as a sex novel!!! 7mo
IndoorDame @vlwelser I‘ve been wondering if it would have stuck around without the scandal. The writing is great. The character studies are strong. And the political commentary is on point for his time and still relevant today… but I also found it totally unmemorable the first time 7mo
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame it‘s good writing and I think would make a good book to study about the times it‘s perceived sex scandal aside… 7mo
mcctrish @IndoorDame I wonder that too ? I think I might be the odd person out here though, while I appreciate each character being well drawn for their role I just find this blah blah blah desperate times, desperate choices, depressing consequences, wind bag entitled speeches, mansplaining sex talk 7mo
OriginalCyn620 I definitely don‘t see this as romance and am wondering why people think it is one. Just because of the sex? It‘s more of a commentary on the time that it was written. And I read this so long ago that I don‘t remember very much at all. @vlwelser I think you‘re correct in that it‘s not that memorable! 😂 7mo
IndoorDame @mcctrish ha! Not just you. So much mansplaining, every turn more depressing than the last. I keep thinking I‘m missing something this time around 7mo
batsy @AmyG Yes! So open, surprisingly frank, but really cringe in parts. It's a lot to take in (not in a bad way). 7mo
batsy I agree with @Vansa I really think it's because of a woman taking her own sexual life into her hands that sent everyone into a tizzy. Still, the full unexpurgated edition was published in 1960 and it's kind of interesting how conservative times were then that seeing the words "c*nt", etc. made people so uncomfortable. And interesting considering that the sexual revolution as such took off in that era. 7mo
vonnie862 Not a romance but almost a commentary to relationships. It also seems to be following the seasons. Isn't it summer in the book during this section? Summer is supposed to be filled with passion. Just wait until Fall and Winter come. 7mo
mrp27 I can‘t see the romance at all. The men portrayed are not at all swoon worthy and nobody seems to be truly in love with anybody. Makes me think of Wuthering Heights and people calling that a romance! 7mo
julieclair I don‘t see this as a romance novel. I don‘t really even see it as a sex novel. More like a “talking about sex” novel. And definitely as a social commentary. The upper/lower class, owners/workers tension pervades everything. And Connie as a woman trying to make things happen in her own life is a good example of early feminism. 7mo
DebinHawaii @mcctrish I am with you 💯!!! 7mo
mcctrish @DebinHawaii 🤣🤣 7mo
TheBookHippie @mcctrish @DebinHawaii it‘s depressing … 7mo
mcctrish @theBookHippie I‘m debating whether I will watch the movie this week or wait ( the closer we get to school starting the less likely it‘s happening 🤣) 7mo
TheBookHippie @mcctrish 🤣👀 I had those same thoughts ! 7mo
mollyrotondo I don‘t think this is meant to be a romance novel and I definitely don‘t see any connection between Mellors and Connie. I think they have honest conversations about sex but that‘s as far as this dynamic goes. She is clearly jealous when she sees a picture of his wife still in his cottage. Whereas he‘s like you are great to have sex with but don‘t expect more. They are not on the same page. They are not in this for one another. 7mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I think Connie is trying to take control of some aspect of her life. Mellors is looking for a woman to change his mind about women. I like that they're sharing honest thoughts, but they aren't hearing each other. This is just a social commentary novel with sex and sex chatter. I don't find any of this romantic, passionate, or sexy. 7mo
TheBookHippie @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick There is ZERO romance. ZERO. 7mo

Chapter 14

Mellors wanted a woman who wanted him sexually..

Clifford has no balls ..👀😬💀

Mellors marriage and past loves.. Oy.vey.

So she wants to live with Mellors forever … or she enjoyed nakedness 😅

So, he‘s a reader.

Thoughts on Mellors ?

AmyG I am still on the fence whether I like Mellors or not. He feels “off” to me but I am not sure if that is him or the time period. 7mo
Vansa I think that's a bit of a simplistic reading.Mellors wants a partner who also desires him sexually apart from being mentally compatible. This book was written when a generation was coming out of Victorian prudery and double standards, and Lawrence wants sex to be a part of life as much as intellectualism, and he's not wrong! 7mo
Vansa I think a lot of Lawrence's own confused feelings about feminism come out in this chapter-a man who wrote very empathetically about women, the importance of their independence and desire but also someone who had been laughed at all his life for not being “ manly“ enough. And he's trying to work these out through his writing.Given the sort of hate Beckham used to get in the 90s,we've still not worked this out 7mo
See All 45 Comments
TheBookHippie @AmyG I feel that too. 7mo
Vansa Given the depth of conversation in this chapter, I was quite disappointed with Lawrence's racism and wish it hadn't been there.Apart from that,I found it fascinating how Connie and Mellors wrestle out topics of sexual desire apart from love or “tenderness“ as they call it.These answers still aren't very clear, and it's incredible that he was writing about this, from a proto feminist perspective,in the 1920s. 7mo
TheBookHippie @Vansa I think he was way before his time and was definitely struggling with the concepts of it all - even gender … the working it out in this narrative makes a good study. I do see why many feminist hate this book on surface level. I don‘t think he was malicious but searching. 7mo
Sargar114 I wasn‘t terribly certain about Mellors before this section either. It was interesting learning his background and kind of why he is the way he is and why he was incredibly hesitant in engaging with Connie in the first place. I can‘t say I like him more or less, but he is more in depth now that we know more. 7mo
Sargar114 @TheBookHippie that seems to strange that feminists hate this book. The protagonist is a woman who is for the most part in control of her sexuality while stuck in her societal and economic role which feels quite ahead of it‘s time. I‘m guessing I‘m missing something. 7mo
TheBookHippie @Sargar114 Connie lets Mellors take the lead too often.. I‘ve read several articles that her getting the best pleasure of her life from that is 😵‍💫. I can see how some of the interactions are written are anger inducing however it‘s 1920s 🤷🏻‍♀️😅 she was taking control and was defiant in and of itself was very independent. But to read it surface level would make you angry. Context is important. 7mo
AmyG @Sargar114 Exactly. More depth. 7mo
IndoorDame @TheBookHippie @Sargar114 I think it all depends where you are when you read it. My first read I loved that she took control over her marriage. This read I‘m hating that she‘s not actually taking control over herself and her needs. 7mo
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame Ha. Agreed. I‘m no fan of her looking for fulfillment in a man find yourself first 😬🤷🏻‍♀️. 7mo
Sargar114 @IndoorDame @TheBookHippie @AmyG I would agree that it‘s angering that she feels the need to find her power in the companionship with a man, but it seems like that‘s how she was raised. She does let Mellors take the lead but considering she was allowing it; I didn‘t see the problem there. 7mo
vlwelser This just all felt so weird. I get that she likes him but forever is a long time. 7mo
TheBookHippie @vlwelser He‘s there. If he weren‘t there we‘d not even be talking … I don‘t see love in any of it. Desperation I see. She is young and trapped. He is there and to her alluring maybe 🤷🏻‍♀️ (edited) 7mo
vlwelser He is rather conveniently placed in the woods by her house. I think this is why I got the impression that Clifford orchestrated the entire thing. But apologies if that's the actual thing that turns up in the last quarter of the book. I don't know if 20 something me made that up in her head or if it's actual facts. 7mo
TheBookHippie @vlwelser I‘ve no clue 😅🤣 it‘s startling how I remember nada about this! 7mo
vlwelser I have read thousands of books in the 20+ years since I read it the first time. Giving myself a pass. You get one too imo. 7mo
TheBookHippie @vlwelser 🤣🤣🤣 I read this …. Wait for it …. About 35 years ago 🤣🤣😵‍💫😵‍💫. 7mo
vonnie862 I enjoyed reading how much more open they are with each other. However, I too am conflicted about Mellors. Connie is constantly asking if he loves her and he responds that she's a got a good c***. She's just a good piece of ass. But at the same time, he has to be the realistic one knowing that their relationship is forbidden and can't really work out in their world. 7mo
mcctrish @Vansa thank you for that window into why/how this scene is happening re:Lawrence. The recounting of past lovers from Mellors was just making me mad - his anger over women who were ‘perfect‘ but didn‘t like sex ( Umm nobody gives a shit if you climax and contraception is a crap shoot, might be best to steer clear) the woman who likes sex is crazy, black people are good but they are black so no thank you. W T F ! 7mo
TheBookHippie @mcctrish the racism is a lot. Also so many troupes and stereo typical patriarchy and it‘s just a mess… phew. 7mo
TheBookHippie @vonnie862 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 7mo
mcctrish I just keep thinking that at the time people were losing their minds at the sex talk BUT not for the right reason! Connie going rogue and getting some side (only) action, and Mellors saying he wants it all in a relationship these seem like the BIG things to me - men and women wanting the same things. Not marrying within your class and carrying on your lineage 7mo
TheBookHippie @mcctrish I agree so many things … 7mo
OriginalCyn620 Yeah, I‘m not sure whether or not I like Mellors. I do like that he‘s a straight shooter - at least he‘s not filling Connie‘s head with a bunch of romantic nonsense. And he‘s honest with her when she asks him questions. There‘s nothing wrong with wanting to be sexually desired (for either of them) but I don‘t think they‘re on the same page. Mellors has no romantic notions whereas Connie does. 7mo
OriginalCyn620 And no, one should never make love declarations while naked and one shouldn‘t believe any such declarations while naked. 7mo
TheBookHippie @OriginalCyn620 👏🏼👏🏼🤣🤣 7mo
Vansa @Sargar114 I don't think you're missing anything!Second wave feminists wrote off Lawrence because of that Kate Millett arguing about how the book was penis worship when it's more about the female gaze than anything else. How many other books written by men prioritise female sexual desire, without also pandering entirely to the male gaze? This book is all about the female gaze! And she very much takes all the initiative here. 7mo
Vansa @Sargar114 also she's very much in charge of her own life, and the relationships among the women are all supportive, including Mrs.Bolton who isn't just reduced to a gossipy housekeeper, she's keeping the house together.Connie makes the decisions here, and Mellors isn't shown as merely wanting her money. Its much more feminist than, say, Colleen Hoover or Stephanie Meyer, both of whom are writing in the 21st century! 7mo
vlwelser And I bet you did nothing more memorable in the meantime. 🙄😂 7mo
batsy Yeah, I'm having a hard time with Mellors & the ideas Lawrence has about women but that can't be helped, we too are products of our time ? I like that assessment though @TheBookHippie "not malicious but searching", there's so much that Lawrence seems to be working through & the best part of a text is when the writer's unconscious voice seems to be speaking. 7mo
mrp27 Oh this chapter was so rich! I laughed out loud at the balls part but was horrified at the racism. I know it‘s a product of it‘s time but always awful to have to encounter while reading. I still don‘t care for Mellors, honest or not. 7mo
DebinHawaii Yeah, sorry, I just was on cringe autopilot for this whole chapter… 😳🫣🤭😵‍💫 7mo
BarkingMadRead This entire chapter made me crazy, I‘m not a real fan of one single person in this book 🤣🤣 7mo
mollyrotondo I hate Mellors. This really sealed the deal for me. He resents women for not wanting to have sex with him and was angry over it. He says the same thing about women not coming at the same time as men like Michaelis got annoyed with Connie over. And he started saying these awful and ridiculous things about “Lesbians”. Uhh it was like listening to Clifford talk about the ruling class and the working class. 🙄 😡 (edited) 7mo
mollyrotondo I actually see Clifford and Mellors as two sides of cold men. Clifford is all about money and power. Mellors is all about sex. Neither man has any sense of another person‘s feelings or about being compassionate and considerate and, I know this is a real hard one, unselfish. I‘m waiting to see how this all shakes out with Mellors but right now I‘m saying I am not in his camp. I want Connie to just leave and go out on her own. 7mo
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo 💯💯💯💯💯 7mo
Larkken What the heck! I thought this was about the titular lady getting her mojo back, but it kinda seems like she‘s just on a slow downhill trending mojo train! @mollyrotondo that monologue almost had me throwing my audiobook. 7mo
Larkken @Vansa thanks for the thoughts on the female gaze - I was having a pretty good long eye-roll party regarding all penis worship and cooing Connie does at his “John Thomas” but never thought of how nice it is not to have the male gaze involved! 7mo
Larkken @mcctrish @TheBookHippie omg, I must have an edited version!!!! The casual racism isn‘t there… but the diatribe about”lesbians” is. How weird. 7mo
TheBookHippie @Larkken I‘m reading THREE versions -one is so 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫 and the antisemitism is just gross. 7mo
mcctrish @mollyrotondo his diatribe against women seemed too much like a social commentary from Mr Stupid Author ( in hindsight) to me but you are bang on with 2 sides of cold men ( and why non lesbians head to the nunnery) 7mo
TheBookHippie @mcctrish I have that written down … I‘d have been a NUN 🤣👀 7mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I forget if it was Connie or Mellors calling "John Thomas" cock-sure, but I laughed that it was a bit too on the nose of a description. People have been having sex for ages. Why is it still unfathomable to men that women might need a hand & not be on his exact schedule. Yes, generally, we all want to be desired, but they act as though they've been having relations for a long time. What is this? The third sexual encounter. Rein it in folks. 7mo

Pushing and obstinate man up the hill…
Connie hates Clifford
Connie‘s reality hits
How will this change the narrative ?
Proust is mentioned …

Vansa I honestly loved what Connie had to say about Proust! Also this scene was captured so perfectly -the entire range of it, from Clifford's very understandable desire to be independent but also his sense of entitlement preventing him from taking Connie's genuinely offered help and making things worse.I loved that Clifford isn't made entirely evil, but consistent with his class, and Connie tries her hardest with him. 7mo
AmyG Agreed, this was very well written. This one incident was so revealing…about them and their marriage. 7mo
Sargar114 This was one time where I actually sympathized with Clifford. While dumb and arrogant his reaction in this scene actually made sense like @Vansa said. Bu then Clifford ends up being Clifford and is an entitled a-hole to everyone trying to help him. Agree @AmyG it‘s a very well written scene 7mo
See All 22 Comments
Vansa My heart went out to everyone in this scene.Of course Clifford has his own traumas to deal with....but he is fortunate enough to have a LOT more privilege than many others, including Mellors. And everyone here is trying and nobody is able to show empathy to the others, it was such a heartbreaking scene.I felt that the Emma Corrin movie didn't show enough nuance with Clifford. 7mo
IndoorDame I agree with everyone. This was one of the few scenes where all the characters came through so clearly. None of them were behaving likeably, but they were all sympathetic. 7mo
TheBookHippie @Vansa I‘ve not watched it waiting til we finish reading. 7mo
vlwelser Lawrence really sets the scene here. It's hard to feel bad for Clifford but it must be frustrating. 7mo
mcctrish While I do feel for Clifford being trapped in that chair, I think Connie behaved far better than I would have - there‘d have been screaming and words and leaving behinds. She has a kinder gentler hate than I‘d have - I‘d be living in a flop house by now 7mo
TheBookHippie @mcctrish a convent looks appealing while reading this … 7mo
vonnie862 @mcctrish I hear you! If I were Connie, I would have walked away and let Clifford deal with his pride. I'm also in agreement with how this scene really captured each character. 7mo
OriginalCyn620 Yes! A great scene where all are captured nicely. @mcctrish @vonnie862 I totally would have walked away too! I know Clifford has his struggles being confined to the chair and he was frustrated, but he doesn‘t need to make others his punching bag all the time. Which is what he seems to do. 7mo
mcctrish @TheBookHippie by the sea 7mo
batsy Agree with everyone re: Lawrence setting the scene so well here and the characters coming alive in how each reacted. I too felt that Connie displayed a heroic amount of patience. Clifford's poverty screed sounded very libertarian—in 2023 he might be that billionaire douchebag attempting to take over social media websites and "rebranding" it as X. I haven't read Proust but liked Lawrence smuggling in some literary criticism via that exchange! 7mo
mrp27 I feel like Connie has had several of these moments when she hits her breaking point with Clifford but she hasn‘t acted on anything yet, in terms of walking away from him. She handled herself and the situation well. I think somewhere deep inside her she has a modicum of respect/like/care for Clifford or else she could just have abandoned him on the walk. 7mo
julieclair I agree that this was a well-written scene. Each of the characters seemed to be their most authentic selves. 7mo
DebinHawaii I agree that it‘s a well written scene. I do give Connie points for her patience. I would have pushed Clifford straight DOWN the hill! 😤 7mo
mollyrotondo Another great scene. If Clifford was anyone else I‘d feel bad for him. But he was such a jerk. Every time someone touched the chair he‘d yell at them when he‘s the one who brought this rickety thing down a steep hill. Again I was so happy Connie spoke up. She did the right thing by helping him get back up on the hill but then she gave it to him good once they were alone. He was so rude to Mellors because he‘s “the help”. Clifford is so annoying. 7mo
mollyrotondo Connie “You don‘t rule, don‘t flatter yourself. You‘re dried up! You only bully with your money…”. So glad she stuck it to him although it does get ruined with the bigotry at the end of that line 🥴 7mo
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫 7mo
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii oh yes straight into the river….. 7mo
Larkken I think this was my favorite part of the book so far. Is the chair standing in for womenkind or the lower class or both? Ha. 7mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I jumped the gun. Should've known this scene would get its own post. I understand Clifford's frustration with the physical challenges, but sometimes, you just have to be gracious and accept help. And maybe don't explore steep hills. Still think they should dump his ass in the river. Would Mrs Bolton truly miss him? 7mo

"Ah, don't talk like a woman! The industry fills their bellies, even if it can't keep their pockets quite so flush
All I meant is people can be what they like and feel what they like and do what they like, strictly privately, so long as they keep the form of life intact.
But mightn't there be a mutual understanding?
Absolutely: when they realize that the industry comes before the individual."

No wonder the men hate you -Connie

TheBookHippie Chapter 13 - WHEW. Clifford. 7mo
Vansa And now you have Cliffords in every single industry, and spread out across the world, with sweatshops wherever one can be set up! If Lawrence were alive ,he would be saying “I told you so“ 7mo
AmyG @Vansa Right? 😳 7mo

TheBookHippie @Vansa That he would. 7mo
IndoorDame @Vansa He was prescient!!!! 7mo
vlwelser It's like the old argument for treating people poorly. They justify it so they feel better. That makes everything ok, right? 7mo
TheBookHippie @vlwelser old as time. 7mo
mcctrish Since I just finished reading Empire of Pain, I read this and thought “what is with these men?!” Lawrence‘s commentaries on business are a bit easier to take then his ‘sex takes‘ which also reflect the time but make me just stew 7mo
vonnie862 Yeah...Clifford. He only cares about his wealth and his business instead of the working class. Even his attitude towards Mellors trying to help him with the wheelchair and Clifford trampling over the flowers symbolizes how these greedy men carr about themselves than people and earth. 7mo
OriginalCyn620 Clifford really is all-around awful! 7mo
batsy @Vansa So true! @vlwelser Agreed! Clifford is unbelievably uncreative after all, if that's the only way he can imagine life to be. Since he does write his stories must be pretty awful! 7mo
mrp27 This was me the whole while when Clifford was speaking 🤦🏻‍♀️. 7mo
julieclair I needed to skim much of what Clifford said. I just can‘t stand him. 7mo
DebinHawaii Clifford remains truly an asshat! 🤬 7mo
BarkingMadRead Clifford is ridiculous 7mo
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii The very definition .. 7mo
mollyrotondo I loved this part. It comes right out and says what industry men actually think. Clifford said it. They care more about the business than people and the little people should feel the same way. Who cares what happens to the lower class as long as business thrives and the aristocracy survives. It‘s a catch-22 idea really. In order to progress (factories, technology) we must keep things the same 🙄 keep everyone in their place 🙄 (edited) 7mo
mollyrotondo At least Connie spoke up against him 7mo
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo 🙄🙄🙄 7mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Cliff, we already hate you. No need to add fuel to the fire. Also, I may be jumping ahead, but couldn't Connie & Mellors just push this prick into the river abs call it an accident? 7mo

Chapter 12
Tea with Mellors ….
Sex isn‘t love and you don‘t need love for sex came to mind while reading …
Childbearing prevention finally talked about…
It‘s interesting for the time this was written that Connies part in sex and how sex is portrayed speaks of the reality of it all- at least so far in the book-what do you think ?

AmyG I don‘t believe that so much for Connie. I think she falls in love with Mellors. 7mo
Sargar114 @AmyG I agree, but I think she did come into this relationship with Mellors with that mindset but it definitely evolved (like it usually does when sex is involved) 7mo

TheBookHippie @Sargar114 @AmyG I think it will continue to evolve. She‘s trapped and is in desperation not to lose herself (IMO) not sure if that makes a love story 😬🫠 but 🤷🏻‍♀️ 7mo
IndoorDame I see the relationship evolving for both of them, but on this read through I can‘t see why… it feels like maybe they‘re pushing themselves deeper into it because that‘s what‘s expected or else there‘s just still something between them Lawrence needs to explore 7mo
vlwelser It does seem like Connie is doing most of the growth here, but Mellors seems like he might be working through some nonsense as well. 7mo
mcctrish I think Connie wants to be in love but with both of them it‘s not romantic love more desperation 7mo
TheBookHippie @mcctrish 💯💯💯💯Desperation 7mo
OriginalCyn620 I agree with all of you! I think Connie wants to be in love and is desperate for that, but it seems like a contradiction to the way she was raised. I would‘ve thought that desperation wouldn‘t be a factor for her! At the beginning of the book, she came off as stronger than that. 7mo
TheBookHippie @OriginalCyn620 She seems to have lost herself. 7mo
mcctrish @OriginalCyn620 absolutely! Her parents gave her and her sister such a non-Victorian upbringing and now she‘s trapped in this hell hole! What could Clifford actually do if she just pushed back ( and not his damn chair) 7mo
OriginalCyn620 @mcctrish 🤣🤣🤣 I would love to see what would happen! 7mo
batsy I'm not sure if it's necessarily love Connie is looking for, perhaps that's part of it too, but that passage in Chap 12 about feeling like the sea and the sense of her self opening up during sex suggests she's in search of a transcendent experience. Right now for her, sex might be a kind of religion, a kind of mystical pathway of sorts. 7mo
mrp27 @Batsy Interesting point. I agree that Connie is not looking for love but looking for something, anything to bring herself out of her miserable existence. 7mo
TheBookHippie @mrp27 @batsy she‘s looking for FREEDOM. That‘s my opinion anyway. 7mo
mrp27 That too of course. 7mo
julieclair I think Connie is much more complacent and vulnerable than she used to be, because she has been beaten down and dispirited by the utter boredom of her life with Clifford. I agree that she is desperately looking for love and fulfillment. 7mo
DebinHawaii I feel like she wants to believe herself in love & having a grand passion but she is pushing herself into it more than truly feeling it. 7mo
batsy @TheBookHippie yes, that's a big part of that transcendent thing I'm thinking 7mo
SamAnne She will do anything to try and feel alive again. 7mo
TheBookHippie @SamAnne I agree. 7mo
TheBookHippie @batsy I think so too. 7mo
mollyrotondo I definitely believe Mellors thinks sex is just sex and wants to keep that boundary with Connie. But Connie is pushing for more because she wants more than the life Clifford is giving her. I think she wants to use Mellors as a way to make a change. I just wish she‘d runaway and make a new life for herself instead of clinging to a man who isn‘t all that great. 7mo
mollyrotondo I had to laugh with annoyance when Mellors asks her if she was taking birth control precautions because he sure as hell wasn‘t. I was just annoyed the way he said and how he wasn‘t going to bother using protection and if that‘s what she wanted she should have done something. I don‘t know. Mellors rubs me the wrong way. 7mo
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo I agree I‘m not a Mellors fan at allllll… 7mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I find this book strange. It's not like Connie was out in the woods naked when she fell down and Mellors fell on top of her, accidentally impaling her with his manhood. Do they really even like each other? There has to be someone out there for Connie where passion would be involved, not just some toolbox who ran away from his wife and figured, sure, why not bone this lady?! 7mo
