The first book haul of 2024. I was especially happy to find Fuzzy Nation, the only book by Scalzi I haven't read, and Robots Versus Slime Monsters, a short story collection by A. Lee Martinez, another favorite author.
#nevertoomanybooks #neverenoughshelves

audraelizabeth Those look like they are older scifi books, am i right? 3mo
RamsFan1963 @audraelizabeth Fuzzy Nation & Robots vs Slime Monsters are fairly recent, 2011 & 2013, but the other four books are much older, from the 70s & early 80s. 3mo
Ruthiella Fuzzy Nation was a lot of fun. I think you‘ll like it! 3mo
See All 6 Comments
audraelizabeth Nice, i dont know that ive read any scifi of that age. 3mo
RamsFan1963 @audraelizabeth The best thing about older sci-fi is it's usually one and done, you don't have to read a series of books to get the whole story. It's getting harder and harder to find genre books that aren't either the start of a new series or part of an existing series. I read plenty of series, don't get me wrong, but sometimes it's nice to get the whole story laid out in 175-200 pages. 3mo
audraelizabeth I understand, im bad about not finishing series. I would think it would be interesting to read how they thought life in current times would be. 3mo

Christmas book haul. This is in addition to having my NYRB book club membership renewed. I think everyone has finally given up on trying to find creative gifts to give me and just defaults to books or coffee (which is fine by me 😁).

Hit the Friends of the Library Fall sale

The shorter stack is for me; the rest are for my #LFL which is on schedule for a November 1 launch 😁

LiteraryinLawrence What a successful book sale! And that‘s so exciting you‘re doing a LFL. 6mo

I got a good #bookhaul from the used bookstore. I've been wanting to try the Thursday Next series, so I was thrilled to see they had The Eyre Affair (and the rest if I want to continue the series). I remember Urshurak from when I was like 15, but it looked too much like a LOTR ripoff so I skipped it. I'll read anything by John Scalzi & Mike Resnick.
#nevertoomanybooks #neverenoughshelves

Bookwomble I had the exact same experience with Urshurak when I was a teen - it looked fantastic, the Hildebrand artwork lush, but the story looked too derivative of JRRT, so I never actually read it. 6mo

After a quick trip to the used book store to drop off a load of books, I decided to treat myself. I was already getting the Star Wars book, but I'm excited to read the book about 80s action stars. The author wrote a very good book, Wild & Crazy Guys, about 80s comedy stars.
#nevertoomanybooks #neverenoughshelves

TieDyeDude All three of those books sound interesting. I picked up From a Certain Point of View a couple weeks ago, but I still have to read the Empire one. 7mo
RamsFan1963 @TieDyeDude While I think Empire is the superior film to A New Hope, I thought the first FACPOV book was better than the sequel. 7mo

I might have gotten a little carried away at today's bookstore visit, but it's been awhile since I splurged. 4 of these books were on my wishlist to read. The Dan Jones book I'd been eager to read after reading his excellent book on the Dark Ages, Powers and Thrones. The Lore book was just a whim, it sounded interesting.

I live an hour away from civilization and many, many hours from a B&N, so when my travel day fell on the 50% sale, it was meant to be. I found 2 of the 5 books I wanted (pictured) which brings me up to FIVE books for my THREE day trip. Lol, I probably won‘t even finish my current book but I live that ‘bring way too many books with me‘ lifestyle and I ain‘t quitting that anytime soon. 🙃📚📚🤓

#nevertoomanybooks #neverenoughshelves

The_Book_Ninja They look damn sexy! 1y
RamsFan1963 @The_Book_Ninja I like my old school science-fiction, short and I don't have to read 5 books to get the whole story. Stand alone sci-fi has just about become a thing of the past, like fantasy has been for many years. 1y
The_Book_Ninja Where do you buy them? 2nd hand books are so expensive nowadays. They used to be pennies 1y
RamsFan1963 @The_Book_Ninja Usually off ebay or the local used book store, also any library sales I can catch. You're right though, even used, older paperbacks aren't cheap. These three ran me about 15, which is much less than a hardback book but still not as inexpensive as they used to be. 1y

It's been too long since I did a nice splurge at the bookstore.
I can never have too many Star Trek novels, and All of the Marvels is something I've been very eager to read. I read Bad Days in History a couple of years ago, I didn't know there was a sequel.

#nevertoomanybooks #neverenoughshelves

Leftcoastzen Nice haul! 2y
Meshell1313 Awesome! If I were going to start reading the Star Trek books, which one would you recommend I start with? There‘s sooo many. 2y
RamsFan1963 Hmmm there are several really good ones. Anything by David Mack or Dayton Ward will be good for anyone no matter your knowledge of Trek lore. A good starting point is the Vanguard series by Mack & Ward. It has both characters from classic original ST and new characters too. 2y

I don't know if it was the heat, but my phone connection has been down all day and I couldn't post on Litsy.
Anyway, I grabbed these books at Goodwill today when I ventured out into the heat. I'm kind of annoyed at Goodwill. For awhile they were putting price stickers on the spines or on the back cover, but now they've gone back to putting them on the front, and they're a bitch to get off without messing up the cover. 😡😡😡

Ruthiella Have you ever tried warming the sticker up with a hair dryer first? I find it helps a lot. 2y
CBee Goo Gone works if you can handle the smell! You don‘t need much and the gel kind doesn‘t seep into the cover or anything. 2y
RamsFan1963 @Ruthiella I'm bald so I don't own a hair dryer 🤣 but I might buy a small one just for this reason. I can't get the one of the Martin Caidin book without damaging the cover. 2y

Tineke @Avanders hey... they did😳 I kept planning to let you know but my life is in some kind of crisis mode. I'm trying to keep on top of things, but it has been hard. Letting you know of their arrival kept being push backed on my to do list. I'm so sorry. 3y
Tineke @Avanders I loved both copies, especially the hardback. I did not expect they made a hardback for this series. I want to start it when I find the time, but I'm afraid that'll be when I get a sense of normalcy back. I can't wait for life to be boring again. Thank you for sending! 3y
Avanders Yay I‘m glad you got them! No worries - I do *completely* understand life!! Oh I know — It doesn‘t seem that they‘re treating this series like a cozy, like many (most? I got asked if I get book shamed often 🤷🏻‍♀️😝
Um 😅 I read what I want …

I do find people get seriously upset when you don‘t like a book they loved, but again 🤷🏻‍♀️ not my problem.

Interesting.

FYI she asked because I read so much classic literature and Shakespeare and “no popular” titles… whatever that means.

Does this happen to you?

Currently, I‘m reading new releases because I was a bit overwhelmed by my personal TBR on my physical shelves. I needed a break but now I‘m looking forward to getting lost in my own stacks again! 3y
CarolynM Sounds to me like she's intimidated by your "intellectual" reading choices. Totally her problem. 3y
TheBookHippie @KVanRead I have quite a few old books I find them so beautiful. 3y
TheBookHippie @marleed me too!!! Read read read! 3y
TheBookHippie @CarolynM 😂🤷🏻‍♀️probably . 3y
Butterfinger I don't know if this is exactly what you mean, but it reminded me of my grandmother feeling the need to explain me - "She gets it from all those books she reads." And, she was the one who encouraged my love of literature. 3y
TheBookHippie @Butterfinger exactly ! 😅 3y
rubyslippersreads @mrp27 I get that too, besides also being shamed for all the time I spend reading. I was actually in a book club where I was the only one who ever read the book, because everyone else spent the meeting bragging. about being too “busy” to read. 😏 3y
mrp27 @rubyslippersreads That's awful! I get that too, I'm too busy to read. We all make time to do the things we love. I wish people would say I don't like reading instead of taking a dig at you. (edited) 3y
TheBookHippie @mrp27 I agree! 3y
TheBookHippie @rubyslippersreads I get that too so rude! I never comment on the time anyone spends on anything. 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @rubyslippersreads That is not a book club I‘d want to be part of! 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage And just 👎🏻 to judging and shaming of all kinds. 3y
rubyslippersreads @BarbaraTheBibliophage As might be expected, it disbanded, due to lack of reading. 😏 3y
