The Phantom Tollbooth (Essential Modern Classics) | Norton Juster
When Milo finds an enormous package in his bedroom, he’s delighted to have something to relieve his boredom with school. And when he opens it to find – as the label states – One Genuine Turnpike Tollbooth, he gets right into his pedal car and sets off through the Tollbooth and away on a magical journey!

Somehow I had never read this children's classic until the play was included in our newest literature textbooks for 6th grade. Love this quote! ?

The 10 books that made their way home with me today. I was thrilled to find some newer ones on the shelf, but I was easily the most excited to finally have my own copy of one of my childhood favourites, The Phantom Tollbooth. I reread it for the #ThrowbackReadathon I cohosted with @monalyisha and I loved it just as much as I had as a child. This was SUCH a great day!♥️

Now to go peel off those darn stickers 😤

rretzler I loved The Phantom Tollbooth! I remember it being a class read in 4th grade. I then didn‘t read it for another 30+ years until I read it to my sons. I‘m probably due for a reread! 2mo
Kamisha Phantom Tollbooth will always be one of my favorites! ❤️ 2mo

This fantasy novel is perfect for an independent reading book in the classroom. For milo, everything‘s a bore. When a tollbooth mysteriously appears in his room, he drives through only because he‘s got nothing better to do. But on the other side, things seem different. Milo visits the Island of Conclusions (you get there by jumping), learns about time from a ticking watchdog named Tock, and embarks on a quest to rescue Rhyme and Reason!

SofiaRoselli The website I found for this book provides a preview of the book, standards, lesson plans, and resources for educators. The lesson plan provided gives an activity where students use a diagram to aid in identifying concepts and seeing relationships which covers ESOL strategy 30. UDL strategy 3.2 is also used because the diagrams helps to highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships. #lae3414sp19 (edited) 2mo

I read this over and over when I was a kid and my copy eventually fell apart. Reading it again felt magical. I forgot how clever this book is. It is fun going back and reading favorites. I have been finding the now-me still loves the then-me favorites.

WhatWouldJaneDo This is my absolute favorite book! I've read it so many times - first out of spite when I missed a Trivial Pursuit Jr question about and then over and over again out of love. 4mo

I have been in a reading funk and this got me out of it! As a kid I dismissed this because of the phantom in the title. More fool me! The word play and world building would have been. Up my 9 year old alley and were a lot of fun now. Yes it‘s a tad preachy and the takeaway about the importance of learning is pretty obvious but the book is none the worse for it!

tealwish Great cover!! I just read this last year. Same thing my preteen self would have been very amused by the adventure and the word play. 4mo

My friends over at He Read She Read launched their bookish pod shortly after I launched mine, and for week two of Manuary, I welcome half of their awesome team — Curtis! In chatting about 1961 classic The Phantom Tollbooth, we journey with the apathetic Milo in a giant toy car through the zany lands of Wisdom. Curtis and I also geek out over wordplay and speculate about what the kids are doing these days. click the link in my bio to listen! 🎧

I was a voracious reader as a child, but most of the books I read then were apparently forgettable, given that I have forgotten them. Not so, "The Phantom Tollbooth", with its sharp humour and clever wordplay it stayed with me over the years.

I got a copy to read to my children (I know they enjoyed it, but probably not as much as I enjoyed reading it to them) and have re-read it to myself for the pure nostalgic pleasure of doing so. ????

Bookwomble A book that should enchant both young and old - there's no need to feel any adult guilt at reading this children's book: a true classic. 10mo

This Mother's Day, like last year, I wore my Phantom Tollbooth T-shirt. Last year was just for comfy fun; this year, in honor of DH's gift: a hardcover signed by both Juster & Feiffer (pictured 3rd from bottom of stack)! Squee! The existing collection included audio narrated by David Hyde Pierce (I am currently re-reading this way on occasional nights), ratty softcovers (mine & NOS's), 50th anniv, random hc, and annotated. Can you tell I'm a fan?

Bkwrm7 What a cool gift! This was one of my favorite books as a child and I remember borrowing the old VHS movie version from my library over and over again. 13mo

Somehow I managed to have never read this one before! Very cute story, whimsical and silly with lots of wordplay. I‘ve heard it compared with Alice in Wonderland and I‘d say that‘s fair. It had a very Sixties vibe to it but still clever even for a modern reader.
