Killing Season
Killing Season: The Unsolved Case of New England's Deadliest Serial Killer | Carlton Smith
4 posts | 2 read | 1 to read
A New York Timesbestselling journalist traces a string of unsolved murdersand the botched investigation that let the New Bedford Highway Killer walk away. Over the course of seven months in 1988, eleven women disappeared off the streets of New Bedford, Massachusetts, a gloomy, drug-addled coastal town that was once the whaling capital of the world. Nine turned up dead. Two were never found. And the perpetrator remains unknown to this day. How could such a thing happen? How, in what was once one of Americas richest cities, could the authorities let their most vulnerable citizens down this badly? As Carlton Smith, a Pulitzer Prize finalist for his coverage of the Green River Killer case, demonstrates in this riveting account, it was the inability of police officers and politicians alike to set aside their personal agendas that let a psychopath off the hook. In Killing Season, Smith takes readers into a close-knit community of working-class men and women, an underworld of prostitution and drug abuse, and the halls of New England law enforcement to tell the story of an epic failure of justice.

1. I can‘t remember anything. It was so long ago. I remember some histories of Mexico, but not the titles or the authors.
2. Black.
3. Do sports games count? I haven‘t binged TV in years.
4. Whatever one is in my latest book.

I joined #BFC and went up a mountain (ok, a hill and this is the view) and ever since I‘m feeling off at best. So my #bookfitnesschallenge has pretty much gone nowhere. Hoping for redemption.

TheSpineView Take it slow if you have not exercised in a while. Think little steps... I know you can do it! 5y
BookwormAHN Great view 💙 5y
saguarosally @TheSpineView I know about that‘s part; this is an easy hill. I think the traveling between New England and Arizona got to me. 5y

I read some of this on the train back to CT and now it‘s time for a trip to New Bedford. Photo taken outside the NYPL tourist museum. Should‘ve gone across the street, oops.
