The Heartbreaker: A Novel | Susan Howatch
4 posts | 4 read
Deftly combining the sacred and the profanethe unmistakable hallmark of her fiction over the past decadeSusan Howatch gives us a spellbinding, suspenseful and psychologically intense new novel. The financial heart of Londonthe Cityis an adrenaline-charged square mile deep in recession in the 1990s, a place where sex is just another commodity to be bought and sold in the marketplace. And the City is where the life of Gavin Blake, who sells sex to high flyers, is finally about to unravel. In the center of the City is St. Benets, a church that ministers to the casualties of this affluent but amoral society. Carta Graham, the St. Benets fundraiser, is at once attracted to Gavin when they meet through a mutual friend, but slowly she realizes that she has entered a relationship far more complex than she could ever have imagined. Gavin is desperate to escape from his world of prostitution, pornography and violence, but as his involvement with Carta and St. Benets deepens, the dangers that encircle him escalate until his life itself is on the line. Carta is determined to help himbut will their mysterious journey together be lifesaving or soul-destroying? All she can do is fight her hardest to help Gavin survive. Consistently surprising and powerfully moving, The Heartbreaker is Susan Howatchs most gripping novel yet. From the Hardcover edition.

2nd book for #OutstandingOctober. The last in the St. Benet‘s trilogy. Despite the dated (and I suspect made up) ‘90s slang, this was another satisfying story of redemption from Howatch. I found it surprisingly moving. Howatch has said she‘s a writer who writes on Christian themes rather than a “Christian writer”. She doesn‘t proselytize which I appreciate. Weird slang aside, it‘s compulsive story. I‘m also using it for #booked2021 Heart in title.

Friends had been watching Dini for us and he and their two little humans almost instantly fell in love. These three have been pretty well inseparable for the last few weeks and tonight, since their movers come tomorrow (also expats but heading to Europe) I had to go pick up Dini. We all cried. We all feel terrible and now Puffs scared and he‘s sad and I‘m wondering if we‘ve screwed up a crucial date and can it all just be over yet? 😭😭😭

CarolynM Oh, that's hard. Hope you're all feeling more upbeat soon.😘 5y
GlassAsDiamonds @CarolynM oh it was horrible 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 I‘m still not convinced he‘s not heartbroken but the EU needs a 180 lead time after they pass their blood test. We might start the process once we hit the ground in Singapore & if he and Puff never manage to call a detente, we‘ll reunite them later in the year. 5y

An intense psychological novel and one of great contrasts. On one hand you have the church ministering to lost souls with gentle care and on the other the harsh, degrading and violent world of a 'high class' sex worker. You really want to know how the story ends, quite a page turner but in many places not an easy read.
