The Pomegranate Witch
The Pomegranate Witch | Denise Doyen
3 posts | 3 read | 7 to read
When a scary old tree blooms with the most beautiful pomegranates ever seen, the neighborhood kids' mouths water with anticipation. But the tree isn't theirsand it has a protector! So begins the Pomegranate War, a fun, rollicking, rhyming tale of a battle between the sly, plucky young rascals and their wry, witchy neighbor who may have more than one trick up her sleeve. This delectable romp from award-winning children's poet Denise Doyen and acclaimed illustrator Eliza Wheeler honors classic children's literature and revels in nostalgia for free-to-roam days full of playful invention.

At the suggestion of @LauraJ I just read this cute poetic Picture Book for my #A2Z for #BBRC.

These illustrations are great, but the rhyming story is what really wins in this one. And the wonderful ending. This is a book I‘d give as a gift!

Hooked_on_books I have no interest in picture books, but I just love the title! This challenge looked like fun but there are too many kids‘ books on it to entice me. Maybe someday after I dig out from TBR mountain. I hope you have fun with it! 5y
Soubhiville @Hooked_on_books I have fun reading kids books occasionally. The one thing I feel like I missed out on by skipping having kids is the opportunity to read to them. I‘m planning to reread a bunch of my own books I still have from my childhood as part of the challenge. 😊 5y
Hooked_on_books @Soubhiville That‘s a great idea. It‘ll be a nice walk down memory lane. I don‘t have any of my books from childhood, but I‘m not terribly sentimental, so I‘m ok with that. Though I am occasionally tempted to track down and read a Sweet Valley High book, even though I know it‘ll be awful. 🙄😂 5y
Soubhiville @Hooked_on_books oh yeah, it‘ll be terrible! I read one last summer and it was bad 🤣. 5y

Eliza Wheeler used to be my neighbor. I adore her illustrations and she‘s a wonderful person, so reading all the books she‘s worked on is my favorite part of #bbrc! Kids will love the rhyming text and pictures and I imagine most adults will get a kick out of it too. #AtoZ

Soubhiville Thanks for bringing this one to my attention! I‘m going to see if my library has it 😊 5y
LauraJ @Soubhiville I borrowed it on Hoopla, if your library doesn‘t have it. 5y

Cute rhymes. I picked it up because it has #pomegranate and #witch in the title. Unfortunately, the story rewards children for theft — even if from someone considered nasty. And, as with most stories about witches, she is not portrayed as benevolent in the least. #childrensbooks #poetry
