The Main Line
The Main Line: Country Houses of Philadelphia's Storied Suburb, 1870-1930 | William Alan Morrison
1 post
The Main Line is the suburban region northwest of Philadelphia synonomous with quiet wealth & exclusivity. This book records the efforts to establish the region as the paradigm of aristocratic country life in America & documents the evolution of the American country dwelling from Victorian gargoyle to domestic ideal.

This is a lovely book that chronicles the magnificent country estates of a suburban enclave outside of Philadelphia, and my neighborhood (although my home is not an estate, alas!) One of the most famous is Ardrossan because of the owner‘s daughter, Hope Montgomery Scott. She is said to have been the model for the lead character in “A Philadelphia Story”, played in movies by Katherine Hepburn and then by Grace Kelly. #estates #150PnPCoverParty

DivineDiana @CrowCAH Sometimes for charity Home Tours, but unfortunately, many have been destroyed. Ardrossan still stands but a very controversial sale of a some of the 740 acres recently took place to construct new homes. (edited) 6y
CrowCAH @DivineDiana oh such a sad day when land has to be sold for new development. 6y
