The Pink Hat
The Pink Hat | Andrew Joyner
4 posts | 6 read
Celebrate the 2017 Women's March with this charming and empowering picture book about a pink hat and the budding feminist who finds it. Here is a clever story that follows the journey of a pink hat that is swiped out of a knitting basket by a pesky kitten, blown into a tree by a strong wind, and used as a cozy blanket for a new baby, then finally makes its way onto the head of a young girl marching for women's equality. Inspired by the 5 million people (many of them children) in 82 countries who participated in the 2017 Women's March, Andrew Joyner has given us a book that celebrates girls and women and equal rights for all! With themes of empathy, equality, and solidarity, The Pink Hat is a timeless and timely story that will empower readers and promote strength in the diverse and active feminist community.

I live in a red pimple in an otherwise blue state, but lately the little local library has been slowly becoming a bit more diverse and progressive in its collection. I don't know who is buying now, but I welcome the change! Saw this on display in the children's section yesterday. 😄💙

It‘s a fine picture book. The illustrations are cute. It‘s a simple story of a hat that floats between people. BUT I thought I was going to be reading about the Women‘s March, who participated in it and why. Halfway through I thought, “Maybe the pink hat is just a coincidence and it‘s not really about the march” but then the last page shows the march. Overall, I was disappointed. It was a wasted opportunity to educate and enlighten young readers.

I added this awesome little book to story time at work today. It‘s one of my favorite picture books that‘s come out recently. I also love how I‘m noticing the pink hat in different kids books. 💓
