The Smile that Wins: (Wodehouse Pick-Me-Up) | P.G. Wodehouse
2 posts | 2 read | 5 to read
'Wodehouse is a tonic' - New Yorker. A Wodehouse pick-me-up that'll lift your spirits, whatever your mood. Cheaper and more effective than Valium.* Offers relief from anxiety, raginess or an afternoon-long tendency towards the sour.* Read when youre well and when youre poorly; when youre travelling, and when youre not; when youre feeling clever, and when youre feeling utterly dim.* Whatever your mood, P. G. Wodehouse, widely acknowledged to be the best English comic novelist of the century*, is guaranteed to lift your spirits. Why? Because Mr Wodehouses idyllic world can never stale. He has made a world for us to live in and delight in.* How? You dont analyse such sunlit perfection, you just bask in its warmth and splendour.* *Olivia Williams *Caitlin Moran *Lynne Truss *Sebastian Faulks *Evelyn Waugh *Stephen Fry This collection contains two of the best Jeeves stories, in which the gentlemans gentleman endeavours to smooth over Bertie Woosters relentless haplessness. Add in the story of a private detective who can make the guilty confess simply by smiling at them, told by one of Wodehouses greatest raconteurs, and youve got an assortment of Wodehouse delights in which lunacy and comic exuberance reign supreme. A slim book of three light hearted short stories about the Upper Crust in England. Beautiful language. Highly entertaining. It definitely is a “Pick-Me-Up”. I understand that Wodehouse has written others in this series, and I will definitely be on the lookout! If you are a fan of Downton Abbey, you will love this!

Tamra Sounds fun! 5y
Nute I‘ve heard only wonderful comments about this series! 5y

A perfectly bubbly, frothy comedy.

The bio in this book tell us that in 1936 the author was awarded the Mark Twain Prize for ‘having made an outstanding and lasting contribution to the happiness of the world‘.

Indeed.

Please settle something for me. Is his last name pronounced WOOD-house or WODE-House? I‘m a bit embarrassed to ask, but you‘re all Littens so you won‘t judge, right?

Thanks again to @Moray_Reads for giving this to me. 💕

TrishB Pretty sure it‘s Wood 😁 6y
Moray_Reads I concur, WOOD-house. Glad you enjoyed 😊 6y
Zelma Thanks so much for asking. I had no idea either! 👍 (edited) 6y
Dogearedcopy It‘s /‘wood-haus/ 🙂 6y
Libby1 @TrishB , @Moray_Reads , @Zelma , @Dogearedcopy - thanks so much for the clarification. It is a name that I only remember reading and not hearing. 6y
