City of Bones (Reprint)
City of Bones (Reprint) | Cassandra Clare
Discover this first installment of the internationally bestselling Mortal Instruments series and "prepare to be hooked" (Entertainment Weekly). When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder--much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It's hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing--not even a smear of blood--to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy? This is Clary's first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It's also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace's world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know... Exotic and gritty, exhilarating and utterly gripping, Cassandra Clare's ferociously entertaining fantasy takes readers on a wild ride that they will never want to end.

Here is my July wrap up with yet another Sarah J Maas as my favorite. However, in a shocking twist Assassin‘s Blade was my least favorite of the month. Also, I had to think real hard because City of Bones was a very, very close contender.

Today‘s Prompt

Sun Hat: choose a book with a vast universe/big setting.

City of Bones is just the start of a series with a vast universe. I can‘t wait to explore the rest. The picture is not mine. I found it on Google. I don‘t own a sun hat apparently. 😂😂😂

I had forgotten how little I care about the plot and main character of this series. But I will definitely go on with my reread because if memory serves the books only get better! #shadowhunterchronicles

BooknerdsLife Hahaa 😂 Same! I kept reading the series for Magnus & Alec but I don‘t mind Jace either & thank goodness it does get better with each book 🤗💛 4w

My monthly challenge was to read a book by an author that is new to me. I chose Cassandra Clare. I was really impressed by this book. So many people either really love it or really dislike it. Well I fell in the love it category. Was it full of YA tropes? Yes. Is it the greatest literary piece of the century? No. Was it a fun read? Absolutely, and that is all I asked of it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

MartinaLove I have never read The City of Glass series except from the first book, Harry Potter, The Infernal Devices or The Hunger Games. Almost everyone I see on social medias talk about these books but... I haven't read them. I need to read them, thought.🤷‍♀️ 1mo
BooknerdsLife Aww if you love this one you would enjoy the rest of the series more as her writing gets better with each book & her characters do grow on you (I‘m totally hooked by her characters)🤗 Personally l think The Infernal Devices is her best series! 1mo
RainyDayReading I‘m glad you enjoyed it! I fall into the ‘dislike‘ camp but that was only after slogging through the next two books. I didn‘t mind the first so much. But the rest....not for me haha. I hope you continue to enjoy! 1mo

TheAromaofBooks Sometimes I think my rating of a book depends more on my expectations of the book than it does on the book itself! 1mo
megzlynn @BooknerdsLife I plan to keep reading them! Even though that ending crushed me lol 1mo
megzlynn @RainyDayReading I‘m interested to see if I stick with the series! 1mo
Shel.f I keep meaning to read these... 1mo
BooknerdsLife @megzlynn OH I do know which ending you mean! And I do hope you keep reading it & not to give up...cause it does get frustrating & somewhat annoying at times too😆 but LOL it will get better & worth it 1mo
RavenclawCris I can‘t find the series at the library, so it‘s on my scribd list. Lol. 1mo

Ever since I finished The Red Scrolls of Magic I‘ve been wanting to reread the Mortal Instruments and I decided now would be the time. I also decided to read at least this one in Finnish as I‘m trying to read more translated books as well as books from the library and this checks both those boxes! #translatedbooks #shadowhunterchronicles #backtothebeginning

So far I'm not terribly impressed... a bit too heavy on the teen angsty tropes (plus a heroine constantly doing idiotic things, presumably to move the plot), but I find the concept interesting and I have the whole series, so I'll at least finish this book before I decide whether or not to bail on the series.

Alright, here we go! Starting over so I can read 4-6 of TMI. I read the first three so fast I don‘t really remember them. I‘ve been enjoying Book of Life, but I like having an easier book to read when I‘m feeling a little lazier 🙃 I also have a DC trip with my 8th graders this week, so there‘s a 10+ hour bus ride both ways to cover!

This book is well-loved by many and not at all by some—which reminds me how people told me how to dress ALL THE FREAKING TIME as a teen. Like every item I wore was up for discussion/criticism. Like maybe I *like* wearing bootie shorts, or a floral pattern tunic over striped leggings!😤

Point is, we have different tastes and that‘s not only okay but necessary for the survival of our species. 🔮🦎

Bad, bad, bad!
A friend loaned me this book, telling me that I'd think it was great. Boy, was she ever wrong!
Terrible dialogue, poorly written, I had to force myself to get to the end. The 'shocking twist' was no surprise at all, and I just couldn't bring myself to care about such an annoying lead character, or any of the supporting characters (Luke wasn't terrible, to be fair).
I *definitely* won't be continuing the series.

Chelleo I hate when recommendations don‘t work out. Hope your next read is great! 4mo
Red.Reads Thanks @Chelleo I've got a huge list of others to work through, so I've no doubt I'll find one I love to counter balance it :) 4mo

Next...

Does anyone have any recommendations of what order to read these? 🙂

#currentlyreading

Tianarose If you want to read the by publish date start with Mortal Instruments, then the infernal devices, then the dark artifices. If you want you could also read chronologically: ID, MI, DA. 5mo
jessinikkip I had no idea but my wife whos read them all suggests this: 1. City of Bones
2. City of Ashes
3 City of Glass
4 Clockwork Angel
5.City of Fallen Angels
6. Clockwork Prince
7. City of Lost Souls
5mo
Tianarose There‘s guides on Cassandra Clare‘s website too. 5mo

my.books.in.squares @Tianarose thanks, I will have a look 🙂 5mo
Nevermore88 Did you read the infernal devices first? 5mo
Shley9225 Honestly I always just say read in the order of publication 5mo
my.books.in.squares @Nevermore88 No. This is the only one I've read. 5mo
ShyBookOwl I had no idea the order was so complex. I only ever read the first one. 5mo
Nevermore88 Omg!! Okay!!! Before you go any further you should read clockwork prince, princess and angel. It‘s the infernal device that‘s before the mortal instruments. Once you read that you will understand the rest of the series . 5mo
Nevermore88 Oh! And the characters and backgrounds 5mo
Nevermore88 Now that I‘m reading previous comments I didn‘t know that was the order if it is. Lol. If anything just look it up. The way I did it was infernal device first cuz it goes way back. But no matter how you do it happy reading! 5mo
BooknerdsLife @my.books.in.squares According to Cassandra Clare, one should read the series in its publishing order, but to make it easier, it‘s the first 3 books from the Mortal Instruments, then the 3 books of The Infernal Device ,& back to last 3 books of the Mortal Instruments so you can avoid most of the spoilers. And after all these 9 books, you Must read the Bane Chronicles!!! 🤗💙💙Happy Reading 🙌🏼💓📚📚 5mo

I liked this. I didn‘t love it, and I can find lots to critique about it, but there are also things that were done well. It feels very YA, and that is not an insult , just more of an observation. I feel like I would have loved this when I was 13, but coming to it from the perspective of a 42-year old woman, it leaves a lot to be desired. I would not hesitate to recommend it to younger fantasy fans, though. It is an interesting world.

This had a plot twist in every chapter. I was like ?that in last plot twist. I really wasn't expecting that. But somehow I am hoping things might turn out good in the upcoming books.

This is a story about a girl clary who can see things that no one else can . She witnesses a murder that only she can see and that she is the only one who saw. Then her mother disappears . To spice it up more " she has a forbidden love?"

Truthfully, I despise movie covers with a burning passion. But it was a cheap Goodwill find, and I was intrigued. (Also, the TV series sucked.)

I'm in love with the world Clare has created. I adore the long game she plays with her plot lines. The characters are so beautifully crafted and wide-ranging in their personalities, flaws, and development. She isn't a favorite author yet, but she's a brilliant writer.
