#12booksof2021 #october

I read a lot in October but much of it was “meh”. Singapore Noir was a standout and is one of my favorite Akashic Noir collections. 🖤

Andrew65 Not heard of Singapore Noir, need to investigate this. 2y

This has to be one of my favorite Akashic Noir collections so far. There was only one short story that I didn‘t like. While the ending on a couple of others left me scratching my head, the stories themselves were enchanting. The sense of place, the variety of characters and plots, all combined to make a rich collection of dark tales. #readingasia2021 #singapore

Based on the build up in this introduction, I have high hopes for this collection!

I finished SINGAPORE NOIR over breakfast. On the whole, it‘s a solid anthology that looks at the darker side of Singapore.

One of my uni friends was a Singaporean who got the hell out as soon as he could on account of the stark class divide and repressive laws. (“It‘s still illegal to be gay!” he told me. “Canada‘s technology is ten years behind, but it‘s better here.”) This book highlights HIS Singapore, not Kevin Kwan‘s glittering playground.

xicanti I do get that Singapore isn‘t terrible for everyone. It‘s not even terrible for all the characters in these stories. But it was... not nice, but maybe validating, to see my friend‘s experience of the place on the page. 4y
CarolynM Many years ago my husband and I had a fascinating conversation with a taxi driver in Singapore. He had lived for a time in the UK and had quite a critical view of Singaporean politics and society. Just before we got out of the car he said "Of course, we never said any of this." 4y
xicanti @CarolynM very interesting. 4y

Come snack time, I switched from my current comic (INVISIBLE KINGDOM by Wilson & Ward) to my current short story collection so I could test out this nifty bamboo tablet stand. I added it to my Ikea order for my dad, who watches videos while he eats breakfast, but his phone case has a little lip on it so it doesn‘t fit. Now I have a helper for when I want to eat and read ebooks at the same time.

X-Men reference in today‘s short story (“Last Time” by Colin Goh)!
