London in Fragments
London in Fragments: A Mudlark's Treasures | Ted Sandling
2 posts | 2 read | 4 to read
A beautiful book...the words Sandling unearths are as delightful as the objects he describes. Daily Mail Mudlarking, searching the Thames foreshore, has a long tradition: mudlarks used to be small boys grubbing a living from scrap. Todays mudlarks unearth relics of the past, from Roman tiles to elegant Georgian pottery. Here are Ted Sandling's most evocative finds, gorgeously photographed. Together they create a mosaic of everyday London life through the centuries, touching on the journeys, pleasures, vices, industries, adornments and comforts of a world city. London in Fragments celebrates the beauty of small things, and makes sense of the intangible connection that found objects give us to the individuals who lost them.

Yesterday's #bookmail is a lovely look at London's past through the eyes and journeys of an honest to goodness mudlark! Beautiful pictures and thoughtful prose. Only in London!

Fridameetslucy Mudlark!! I am smitten with this word and now I need yo figure out how to apply it to my drawings ! 5y
tournevis I have loved that word forever! As a historical anthropologist, it's one of the first historical English-language word linked to material history I learned. So evocative and descriptive. 5y
LeahBergen I‘ve always wanted to go mudlarking!!!! 😍😍😍 5y
tournevis @LeahBergen The closest I've ever done is clam fishing. 5y

My London guidebooks (for walking and eating!) 😁

London in Fragments is really interesting, it‘s about mudlarking (digging for treasure along the banks of the Thames).

Ingerella @RedLeaves @RachelO When we went to London my husband surprised me with mudlarking and we found lots of pottery and pipes! We were so interested in the pipes we took our bag of finds to the London museum and one of people there gave us the best history lesson. I highly recommend it! 5y
squirrelbrain @RedLeaves @Lcsmcat @RachelO Gosh @Ingerella I bet that was amazing! There was a series on telly in the UK a few years ago called Mudmen and they used to take their finds to the Museum of London too. I think you can find it on Youtube if you‘ve not seen it.... 5y
Lizpixie There‘s a BookTuber who has a regular series of Great London Walks.👍 5y
