Seemingly the simplest of storiesa passing anecdote of village life Rock Crystal opens up into a tale of almost unendurable suspense. This jewel-like novella by the writer that Thomas Mann praised as "one of the most extraordinary, the most enigmatic, the most secretly daring and the most strangely gripping narrators in world literature" is among the most unusual, moving, and memorable of Christmas stories. Two childrenConrad and his little sister, Sannaset out from their village high up in the Alps to visit their grandparents in the neighboring valley. It is the day before Christmas but the weather is mild, though of course night falls early in December and the children are warned not to linger. The grandparents welcome the children with presents and pack them off with kisses. Then snow begins to fall, ever more thickly and steadily. Undaunted, the children press on, only to take a wrong turn. The snow rises higher and higher, time passes: it is deep night when the sky clears and Conrad and Sanna discover themselves out on a glacier, terrifying and beautiful, the heart of the void. Adalbert Stifter's rapt and enigmatic tale, beautifully translated by Elizabeth Mayer and Marianne Moore, explores what can be found between Christmas Eve and Christmas Dayor on any night of the year.

Two children set off on foot from their home in an Alpine village on Christmas Eve to visit their grandparents. On the way back they are caught in an unexpected snowstorm. This novella was first published in 1845. A great little Christmastime read.

3⭐️ Awww what a sweet story for Christmas Eve 🥰 Exquisite landscape descriptions, and the ending is so heart-warming and it acts as a reminder for us to be grateful for what we have. The story is also apt for today as we are ending 2019 and welcoming 2020. Happy New Year, all! 🥂 Here‘s to more books and enjoyable reads in the new year 😘

I'm not a seasonal reader, but last #December I planned on reading the four pictured books. I read, & loved, the Pratchett & the Sedaris. I should be able to read the bottom two this month. I'm also thinking of squeezing in a reread of Holidays on Ice on audio, as I have yet to experience the pleasures of a Sedaris audio book.

LeahBergen Oh, DEFINITELY listen to it on audio! ❤️ 5y
Aimeesue I reread Hogfather and listen to Holidays on Ice every December. Some people do Scrooge and Tiny Tim, I do Susan Sto Helit and Crumpet the Elf. HO HO HO. 5y
Cinfhen I don‘t think I have a “December” read~ maybe because I celebrate Chanukah I don‘t have that same connection to a holiday read 🤷‍♀️ 5y

I'm really annoyed by Amazon's recent decision to give prominence to the cheapest previously owned edition, rather than the new edition. I have nothing against buying used, but I thought I was receiving the NYRB Classics edition of Fermor's "Time of Gifts." At least I received the correct edition of the tagged book. It sounds like a delightful holiday read.

readordierachel A Time of Gifts sounds really good. 6y
Karkar I️ agree I️ hate that change that Amazon did!! 6y
RealBooks4ever Another reason not to buy from Amazon. 🤔 6y

batsy Rock Crystal is on my TBR! Thanks for the reminder 😀 6y
LeahBergen Ooo, you mean you can‘t be sure what edition you are getting? 😮 6y
TricksyTails Is this with all Amazon book purchases? I'm confused. I'm tired of my books arriving in bad condition from them but had no idea regarding the editions. 6y
Soubhiville Snowcrash is a fave of mine! Enjoy! 6y
vivastory @LeahBergen You have to make sure that next to the seller it says Amazon. I forgot to check & wound up with a non-NYRB edition. 👎 6y
vivastory @TricksyTails Yes, unfortunately it's with all of the books. I agree about receiving damaged books. I got one last week that was damaged because they didn't use anything to protect it. It's a hardback, but they can still be damaged if they're not packaged properly 6y
vivastory @Soubhiville it's hard to resist a book with a character named Hiro Protagonist 6y
vivastory @batsy I was unaware of it until I was browsing the NYRB site. It's short, but I think it'll be quite memorable 6y
vivastory @Karkar It's terrible. Really frustrating 6y
vivastory @ReadOrDieRachel It's part of a trilogy, so I'll have a lot more to choose from if it's as great as I think 6y
TricksyTails Ugh. WTH? Amazon used to be so careful and had good customer service. I ordered the anniversary The Name of the Wind and the spine is scraped and crumpled. I was crushed. I had waited so long for it. I don't know what to do because if I return it, they're now on the third printing. For me, that matters because I collect first edition/first printing. Wish I lived near a bookstore so I could see what I'm getting. Where will you order from now? 6y
vivastory There's a Barnes and Noble right down the street & there's also an independent store I love about 25 minutes away. I really should support them more since they schedule the author events I enjoy 6y
RealBooks4ever Independent stores can order just about anything for you these days! 💜 6y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk Oooooo Snow Crash. Classic! 6y
