Pachinko (National Book Award Finalist)
Pachinko (National Book Award Finalist) | Min Jin Lee
NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FINALIST National Bestseller In this bestselling, page-turning saga, four generations of a poor Korean immigrant family fight to control their destiny in 20th-century Japan, exiled from a home they never knew. "There could only be a few winners, and a lot of losers. And yet we played on, because we had hope that we might be the lucky ones." In the early 1900s, teenaged Sunja, the adored daughter of a crippled fisherman, falls for a wealthy stranger at the seashore near her home in Korea. He promises her the world, but when she discovers she is pregnant-and that her lover is married-she refuses to be bought. Instead, she accepts an offer of marriage from a gentle, sickly minister passing through on his way to Japan. But her decision to abandon her home, and to reject her son's powerful father, sets off a dramatic saga that will echo down through the generations. Richly told and profoundly moving, Pachinko is a story of love, sacrifice, ambition, and loyalty. From bustling street markets to the halls of Japan's finest universities to the pachinko parlors of the criminal underworld, Lee's complex and passionate characters-strong, stubborn women, devoted sisters and sons, fathers shaken by moral crisis-survive and thrive against the indifferent arc of history.

This book takes us on a journey alongside a Sunja and her family, over 4 generations. It's the story of a Korean family as they travel to and expand their family in Japan throughout the 1900s, thru wars, poverty, and discrimination. I enjoyed how developed the characters are. They are complex and we see the humanity of what it's like to live poor as an outsider with limited opportunities. This book felt real. I definitely recommend it!

Rainy day reading. I'm about half way thru #Pachinko It follows the lives of this poor immigrant family over four generations, starting in the early 1900s. I still have a couple generations to meet 🙃 Have you read it yet? What'd you think?

TrishB I loved it 👍🏻 7d
ChristinasBookChronicles @TrishB I'm glad! I am really enjoying the story as well, however I've been struggling to stay focused on reading. I was hoping a rainy day would allow me to sit still and read, but I'm extremely susceptible to the gray-day-sleepiness 🤷🏻‍♀️📚 #booklifeproblems 7d

Did you know that today is National Book Lovers Day?! I can't think of anything more appropriate than this being the holiday that falls on my birthday every year. To top it off, my husband got me this awesome bookmark / page holder and took me to The Library, a local restaurant, to celebrate! I only reread this page twice before giving up on reading today though. Instead, I came home with 3 new books...

Daisey Sounds like a wonderful way to celebrate. Happy Birthday! 2w

Ladies, if you want a purse that is ALL the things: durable, functional, compact, AND inexpensive, I figured out the trick - you have to google “man purse”. I ordered this thing from Amazon and it has 6 pockets plus 4 pouches, including one pocket in the back that makes an ideal book pocket! Link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B072PVTHR9/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_sHztDbERA1818

Eyelit Thanks for the link! Is that the small or large bag? 2w
hgrimes @Eyelit I went with the large one! 2w
LibrarianRyan yeah that looks like something my guy carries.

Eyelit Good to know! Thanks again 😄 2w
hgrimes @LibrarianRyan Men get all the good stuff! It‘s not particularly “sexy” but I typically only need something formal enough to bring to work and this does the job! 2w
LibrarianRyan @hgrimes My guy changes bags way more often than I do. And he has bags to go inside of bags. I last changed by handbag a few months ago because he bought me a cool dinosaur one, but before that i don't think i changed by handbag for 2 years. He changes if not weekly, then monthly. He has a ton so that helps, but sheesh. 2w
hgrimes @LibrarianRyan Me too, I‘m so fussy about bags that the bottom of the bag basically needs to tear out before I‘m willing to consider a new one!I‘ve been looking for a while and finally got desperate and scoured Amazon. My husband on the other hand is uncool carny trash and has about a dozen fanny packs. 😂 2w
LibrarianRyan @hgrimes I used to change my work bags frequently, but then Josh got me a storm trooper backpack which I have carried for almost 3 years, but its just so big. As for my purse, the smaller the better. I prefer a writstlet but my aunt bought this mini structured Michel Kors that she hated. I love it. But I need to get the handles fixed. My wallet however, I have had for 10 years. replacement time is coming but I can not find any i like. 2w
hgrimes @LibrarianRyan Now I feel like a need a storm trooper backpack! 2w
Zelma Ooh, you may have just changed my life. I hate purses and am a tote bag kind of gal. But I want pockets and more organization than a tote. 2w
hgrimes @Zelma Why must totes with pockets be such a foreign concept? My bag this is replacing was tote-style with just one small zipper pouch. It required frustrating amounts of digging to find anything! I‘ve been on the hunt for a while for something more functional and have stumbled on a few I liked but they didn‘t pass the “Will it fit a book??” test. 2w

I loved this novel! An epic chronicle of 3 generations of a Korean family living in Japan. It‘s fiction, but I learned sooo much about Korean and Japanese culture and history through it and how drastically it changed (and not changed) over the course of less than a century. The level of research and detail is astonishing. It‘s fiction, but so real at the same time. If culture and the humanities fascinate you, this is must read.

A multigenerational saga that follows the unfolding drama of a young girl and her monumental struggle to adulthood. There are times when the book is slow, but if you persist it is well worth the read. The characters are well developed and relationships, as well as their consequences, intricately described. The tale builds to a sad but inevitable conclusion. It‘s worth sticking out to the end.

I loved this story of the Korean immigrant experience in Japan. The author was ambitious in covering the history of the colonial period and the class, race, economic, religious and gender struggles of those without a true home, trying to survive, thrive and belong. Min Jin Lee nailed it. I felt like I could relate to this Korean family experience and am so glad to know more about this struggle. Lee achieved her accolades and I am better for it.

I loved this novel of the Korean immigrants in Japan stemming from the colonial period. This book handled class, racism, nationalism, belonging in this world where no place is home and gender differences. Honestly, this was such an ambitious story but Min Jin Lee nailed it. I really felt like I experienced these lives from their perspective. Isn‘t that the goal and hope for any storytelling. So glad to now know something about this diaspora.

Absolutely loved this. I‘m late to the party - everyone I know has loved it - but happy to join in the praise! A beautiful saga - great sense of place (from Yeongdo, Korea to Osaka, Japan), real characters and a story that feels true. Describes the experience of being Korean during the Japanese occupation & then In Japan, being treated as an outsider (still the case today). I loved the honesty, the colourful scenes & the humanity of the story.

Listened to the audiobook and although it‘s one of the longer ones (18+ hours), it went by quickly. I enjoyed the subtle ways the political and cultural context was interwoven with character development. None of it felt forced, and all of it felt essential to gaining a depth of understanding and emotion for multiple generations of this family — who still seems to be searching for where they belong.

Pickpick

This book is amazing. My only regret is that I waited this long to read it. Epic in scope, but eminently readable. If you haven‘t read it yet, don‘t wait! (Gratuitous and 30-some year old photo of my nephew.)

GingerAntics He was a cutie!!! I‘m sure he‘s a handsome young man now. 4mo
Leftcoastzen I thought it was a wonderful book. 4mo
Lcsmcat @GingerAntics He is! I posted a more recent picture of him about a year ago on 4mo

Lcsmcat @Leftcoastzen Me too! And full of great characters. 4mo
GingerAntics He‘s smile is still very much like it is in this picture, though. 4mo
Lcsmcat @GingerAntics His sense of mischief hasn‘t changed either. 😀 4mo
GingerAntics I love when that happens. 4mo

This book has been on my TBR since it came out! I'm super excited to finally start it. 🤓

I'm also drinking a much needed cup of coffee in a mug from the wonderful @GlassAsDiamonds 😊☕

babyruth2510 I love the cover. This book is on my TBR too 4mo

GlassAsDiamonds Best. Mug. Ever. 😂😂😂😂😂 4mo
Buechersuechtling I love your mug. (Also wanted to wish you a nice feast day but, you 1st of May seems not to be a day off in the U.S. – so bear with me and have a nice day still. Maybe with being able to leave work a bit earlier.) 4mo
Rachel.Rencher @Buechersuechtling What is feast day? The only thing Americans do this time of year is repost pictures of Justin Timberlake. 🤦🏻‍♀️ 4mo
Buechersuechtling @Rachel.Rencher My fault. 🤦🏽‍♀️ How do you call those “nationwide” days off❓ Like Christmas and Easter and so on❓ 4mo
Rachel.Rencher @Buechersuechtling Oh no you're good! I thought feast day would be like our Thanksgiving. ? We just call those "holidays" 4mo
Rachel.Rencher @Buechersuechtling By the way, I think you'd be a really fun pen pal if you have ever wanted an american writing buddy 😁 4mo

I am loving this book! I‘ve read mixed reviews, but I don‘t find that it jumps around too much or is hard to follow. I‘m tearing through it - about halfway through after starting it yesterday.

mom2bugnbee I loved this! But I do love sweeping, epic family stories. 4mo
GatheringBooks this is on my to-read stack for this year. really looking forward to it. 😍🧚🏼‍♀️💕📚 4mo
