Little Dorrit (Revised)
Little Dorrit (Revised) | Charles Dickens
A novel of serendipity, of fortunes won and lost, and of the spectre of imprisonment that hangs over all aspects of Victorian society When Arthur Clennam returns to England after many years abroad, he takes a kindly interest in Amy Dorrit, his mother's seamstress, and in the affairs of Amy's father, William Dorrit, a man of shabby grandeur, long imprisoned for debt in Marshalsea prison. As Arthur soon discovers, the dark shadow of the prison stretches far beyond its walls to affect the lives of many, from the kindly Mr Panks, the reluctant rent-collector of Bleeding Heart Yard, and the tipsily garrulous Flora Finching, to Merdle, an unscrupulous financier, and the bureaucratic Barnacles in the Circumlocution Office. A masterly evocation of the state and psychology of imprisonment, Little Dorrit is one of the supreme works of Dickens's maturity. Stephen Wall's introduction examines Dickens's transformation of childhood memories of his father's incarceration in the Marshalsea debtors' prison. This revised edition includes expanded notes, appendices and suggestion for further reading by Helen Small, a chronology of Dickens's life and works, and original illustrations. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust theseries to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-datetranslations by award-winning translators."

A new book to add to my list of favourite Dickens. I loved this. Fanny and Mr Dorritt made me laugh; the Meagles were just lovely; and I felt that all characters received a satisfying ending. And Dickens manages to convey the absurdity of the debtors‘ prison and the sheer luck of wealth.
Juliet Stevenson is a wonderful narrator. Thoroughly recommend.

⭐⭐⭐⭐ (The 2008 BBC miniseries starring Matthew Macfadyen is 5⭐! 😍) I have loved this story since watching the miniseries but am just now getting to the book. So good!!

melissajayne Claire Foy (aka Queen Elizabeth II in the The Crown) is Little Dorrit. I love that miniseries as well. (edited) 2y

quietjenn @batsy @LeahBergen Thanks so much, friends! I appreciate the well wishes 💙 2y
quietjenn @Leftcoastzen I can kind of see that! It's a long one and while everything (mostly) comes together in the end, it can be hard to see how he's going to get there along the way. There's also a lot of commentary and/or critique on Victorian society and the upholding of certain ethics/values that don't totally jibe with a modern viewpoint. I'm glad I read it, but I don't think it's going to go to the top of My Favorite Dickens list. 2y

Little Dorrit demonstrates and insists on the possibility of moral self-cultivation and rewards or punishes those characters according to their moral behavior. In short, no one gets away with anything because everyone's accountable for themselves. The intricate development of the characters predisposes the reader to be heavily vested in the story‘s characters and the stories development, an overall delightful read!

Still clearing out bookshelves, and came across this classic that I read a few years ago. I truly believe that many young people dislike classics because they are too young to appreciate them when they‘re more or less forced to read them. Hubby says you have to be a father to truly appreciate Silas Marner. Anyway, if you would like to have this, let me know😄

Caroline2 I totally agree! I don‘t know why they force old “classics” on teenagers then they wonder why teenagers think all books are boring and don‘t want to read! 🙄 6y

Lynnsoprano @umbrellagirl OMG! I hadn‘t realized that! I saw the series on PBS about 10 years ago. I never made the connection. 6y

My gran loved reading more than anything, and she was always delighted that I shared her passion. My gran recently passed away and I kept a handful (ahem, 26) of her books, to read and to remember her by. Problem is, I just realised I‘ve broken my ‘can‘t have more than 350 books in this house that I haven‘t yet read‘ rule.
Current owned TBR = 374. Oops.

DebbieGrillo I'd say the 26 of your Gran's don't count. By those rules, you can buy two more. 6y

I managed to do a 4 year Scottish degree in English Lit and totally avoid Dickens. I read Great Expectations in my mid teens and HATED it. So this is the only Dickens I own. #TBRsomeday maybe a considerable number of additional years will change my mind. Yet another chunkster #Ilikebigboks

Bambolina_81 I love Dickens and Great Expectations is my least favourite too! Little Dorrit and Bleak House are my favourites - they are chunksters but the characters are fantastic and really pull you through the stories. 7y

Reecaspieces I will read anywhere. Car,bathtub, work, ballgame. But my favorite place is outside. Anywhere outside. Anywhere with a fireplace and comfy chairs will do. 7y

becausetrains My favorite place is anywhere I can concentrate enough to get sucked into a book, especially moving places. TheLondonBookworm I'll read anywhere and everywhere! Currently I'm tucked up on a corner sofa of a hostel in Tralee, Ireland enjoying my evening post surfing in the Irish Sea! But my favourite place is tucked in my parents sofa corner - best sofa in the world!!!!! 7y

#readJanuary. This is my definitive #slowread, but it was so absolutely worth it. I have this weird relationship with Dickens. My favorite of his books is Bleak House, yet I've never been able to get through Great Expectations, and I've tried multiple times. This, though, is probably in my top ten classics.

JanuarieTimewalker13 I tried this but got tied up in the government bureaucracy part, it was brilliant, but I couldn't make it through. I think a lot of times it's the size of the font that gets me...I don't know. 7y

Finishing some Dickens while I finish a hat. This is a more jaded book, I think than Bleak House. The worries over wealth and class have a more punitive tone in this story of debt, greed, and family.
