This book follows joseph as he makes his old and worn coat into many new things. It gives a great message of finding new ways to love old things. Joseph doesn‘t get sad when his items get worn, but rather uses it to make something new.

blurb

I like this book because it‘s an easy read and the art is really cool. The pattern of the cost continues through the whole book and there are different shapes each time his clothing changes so it would be a fun guessing game for the kids. Also, it encourages repurposing things and never taking anything for granted.

Joseph Had a Little Overcoat by Simms Taback 1999. This book tells the story of Joseph having an overcoat that continues to age. As it ages, instead of throwing it away he makes something new out of each tinier piece. Along the way, he does all sorts of different activities to show off his new clothes. Moral of the story is you can make something out of nothing. Caldecott.

I remember being in Elementary this use to be one of my books and we would do such unique activties after we read the story. The story is about a Jewish Farmer who wore a striped overcoat and the farmer who use the material of the jacket to make other clothing items he may have needed. This story teaches children you can always make something out of nothing.

Joseph once had a big overcoat, but now not so much! Joseph Had a Little Overcoat is Caldecott award winning RF written and illustrated by Simms Taback, about a man who teaches us that we can always make something out of nothing. This book is a uplifting and fun book that students will love, it is great for CR due to its repetition and simple language too! #ucflae3414su20

Emmaturtle3 https://www.rif.org/literacy-central/material/joseph-had-little-overcoat-sing-al... this is such a fun sing-along for students after reading this book!! The website also has other great resources for this book and others. ESOL strategy #17 it‘s well with this book do you to the audio visual aspect of the sing-along. UDL 8.4 can be used when asking questions to students about how the made something out of nothing in their own lives. 4y
DrSpalding This is traditional literature. Reading is fundamental is an excellent resource. The sing-along is engaging, motivating and an excellent complement to this story. Knowing that traditional literature was passed down by word-of-mouth, storytelling works well. 4y

Review: Joseph Had a Little Overcoat by Simms Taback, 1999, is a Caldecott Winner about Josephs overcoat, and the many different forms it took. It has lovely animated illustrations and tons of humor.
Blurb: I would use this book as a read aloud because of the repetition the book has, children would be able to read along even without being able to read.
Quote: “So he made a jacket out of it and went to the fair.“

This award winner uses the illustrations to extend the text from the detail and original style the illustrator uses.

This book is an award winner because it received the Caldecott Medal. It was deserving of this award because you could actually see texture within the coat images, and the images exemplify the text.

I would use this book in my classroom because its images would really get the kids interacted, and it is a good book about recycling clothes you love.

This book is a Caldecott winner, and for good reason(pub.1977). It had beautiful illustrations and a nice rhythm throughout the story.
I think that it is very interactive with whomever may be listening to the story. It has a great flow and consistency to it and shares the importance of reusing items. Overall, I think that the message is one that not many people think about, but is great to put out there.
“So Joseph made a book about it.“

Teaches a good lesson to kids! Things can always be reused and just because something is kind of ruined doesn‘t mean it needs to be thrown away.

Joseph Had a Little Overcoat was written by Simms Taback. It won a Caldecott Award in 2000. The book is based on a overcoat that Joseph loves and he continues to make new things out of it when it starts getting worn out. Teaches a good lesson!

This would be a great book to show children. Each page is something new and exciting. The children would enjoy seeing what Joseph made. Also there is a good lesson to teach them, you can always make something new out of something old so don‘t just throw away something because it looks old.

Joeseph Had a Little Overcoat by Simms Taback, 2000. Caldecott Winner. I have never read this book before. I enjoyed how he made something new out of something old. I liked how the new items where showed throughout the book. The cut outs on each page made it exciting to see what was coming. The words were simple and the illustrations were interesting to look at. Taback even left the reader a letter which I think makes the book more personal.

Joseph Had a Little Overcoat by Simms Taback was written in 1999 and won the Caldecott Medal in 2000. This book is so vibrant and eye catching. I think it almost teaches us a lesson about sustainability because he always found use for his overcoat and didn‘t just throw it away and keep buying new things. This is good for kids to start learning about so they are aware of it. The illustrations are just wonderful as well.

Simms Taback‘s Caldecott medal winner, Joseph Had a Little Overcoat, is a great kids book. This book tells the story of a man who made something out of very little and was thankful for it regardless. This book is also based off of a song that could be sang with children as well

This TL, a Caldecott Honor book, is all about Joseph‘s overcoat that he kept for a long time. After so long, it began to fall apart. He would later make it into a scarf, then a necktie, a handkerchief, & more items. This would be great in any elementary school classroom library. This book would best be RA, PR, and S.

https://www.rif.org/literacy-central/book/joseph-had-little-overcoat

Summerm This book would best be used with the UDL principles: 3.2 (highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships) & 3.3 (Guide information processing and visualization). Also, the EL strategies: 11 (place language in meaningful context) & 6 (continually monitor students‘ comprehension). 5y
Summerm 3.3 (by guiding information and having the class visualize what his coat looks like will help them become enveloped in the story.

6 (Since this is aimed for young readers, it is helpful to students to make sure they are all cooperating which helps with comprehension)

DrSpalding From several of your posts, you understand that good books can be used in a variety of ways to meet the needs of all students. Being that this is traditional literature, storytelling is a natural choice however reading aloud, etc works too. 5y

Kayladvazquez I love the resource you gave it provides questions that can be used when doing an interactive read aloud which is great. I like the idea of getting the children involved and acting out the book. I feel this book has a lot of hands-on and visual activities that would be very helpful for ELL's. 5y
