The House of Unexpected Sisters
The House of Unexpected Sisters: No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency (18) | Alexander McCall Smith
26 posts | 27 read | 11 to read
Precious Ramotswe learns valuable lessons about first impressions and forgiveness in this latest installment of the beloved and best-selling No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series. Mma Ramotswe and Mma Makutsi are approached by their part-time colleague, Mr. Polopetsi, with a troubling story: a woman, accused of being rude to a valued customer, has been wrongly dismissed from her job at an office furniture store. Never one to let an act of injustice go unanswered, Mma Ramotswe begins to investigate, but soon discovers unexpected information that causes her to reluctantly change her views about the case. Other surprises await our intrepid proprietress in the course of her inquiries. Mma Ramotswe is puzzled when she happens to hear of a local nurse named Mingie Ramotswe. She thought she knew everybody by the name of Ramotswe, and that they were all related. Who is this mystery lady? Then, she is alerted by Mma Potokwani that an unpleasant figure from her past has recently been spotted in town. Mma Ramotswe does her best to avoid the man, but it seems that he may have returned to Botswana specifically to seek her out. What could he want from her? With the generosity and good humor that guide all her endeavors, Mma Ramotswe will untangle these questions for herself and for her loved ones, ultimately bringing to light important truths about friendship and familyboth the one youre born with and the one you choose.

This was the first of two audiobooks I had for my drive, chosen because I knew it would be comforting to spend the time with characters I know well.

I always chuckle at the little mundane conversations that get silly and twisted because of different personalities and opinions. A great way to spend a day in the car.

AnnR I understand what you mean about the conversations between characters. 😁 Currently I'm still making my way through the series. I'm not quite up to this book yet. 4mo
Tamra ❤️ warm hug characters. 4mo

No 1 Ladies Detective Agency BINGO CARD 🤣

I enjoyed this one (book 18), but I have to be careful not to read several of these in a row! The formula gets to be a bit much after two or three back to back!

Kristin_Reads I love this series! I‘ve been reading one a year since it started. My comfort reads! 2y

I love this series. The writing is reminiscent of a simpler, gentler tone. The characters and plots work together seamlessly. No foulness, just excellent story telling about a female detective in Botswana.

Loved this book and think it was one of the best in the series so far, despite being book 18 in the series. This was quite an emotional book, and was quite a roller coaster journey for Mma Ramotswe, and at one point left me with tears in my eyes. Can only rate this one as five stars, great book and I wait impatiently for the next one to be published in November.

CSeydel I kind of ran out of steam for this series after the Beauty Shop one, but your enthusiastic review makes me want to start up again! 6y
BookishMe @CSeydel I know what you mean but each time I pick up the subsequent title, I am overcome with overwhelming love for Ramotswe & Co 6y
Andrew65 @CSeydel I think the author did too as I felt one or two disappointments around that point in the series but really enjoyed this one. 6y

“Mma Makutsi laughed. “You men,” she said. “Your time is up, I‘m afraid. All the big jobs are going to be done by women soon. You just watch out-the women are coming!” (page 123)😂 #1ladiesdetectiveagency

Mma Ramotswe watches a lizard moving along the bark of a tree:

“Most of the time we did not notice such things because it was our own business that we were concerned with, and our hearts were not large enough for things that were so much smaller than we are.”

Hello!

I‘ve missed you all the last few days.

I‘ve been plugging on with Barnaby Rudge but now I need a break.

Time for some coffee with Mma Ramotswe.
