The Cove
The Cove | Cynan Jones

From the Jerwood-award winning author of The Dig, here is a short, sharp punch of a book about a man and a boat in deep, uncertain watersOut at sea, in a sudden storm, a man is struck by lightning. When he wakes, injured and adrift on a kayak, his memory of who he is and how he came to be there is all but shattered. Now he must pit himself against the pain and rely on his instincts to get back to shore, and to the woman he dimly senses waiting for his return. With its taut narrative and its wincingly visceral portrait of a man locked in an uneven struggle with the forces of nature, this is a powerful new work from one of the most distinctive voices in British fiction.

A man sets out in a kayak intending to scatter his father's ashes. But a storm arises: he is struck by lightning and left lost, disoriented, wounded, and at the mercy of the elements. Now he must find a way to return to a home he barely remembers.

The prose is spare and visceral, arranged with the generous whitespace of a poem. It's a captivating story well told and effectively presented. It's a good one, y'all.

I didn't get it.
I don't even understand how it ended.
I was just looking for a short book to pass the time while I wait for The Library Book to become available on Libby which should be any day now!!

Short enough to read in a day or two, it's totally worth it. A very pared down writing style matches the gritty scenario of the book: A man in a kayak struck by lightning finds himself without a paddle or memory and trying to get home.

I feel guilty saying this was so-so. Honestly I think it may be a case of trying to read this book at the wrong time for me. Perhaps I will try after the hub-bub of the festive season has subsided.

New novel Cove is a skilfully condensed & dramatic story about the shock of being jolted out of time! A man at sea is struck by lightening & struggles to return home.
