Selected poems | Linton Kwesi Johnson
1 post | 1 read | 1 to read
This is a selection of Linton Kwesi Johnson's best poems over three decades. Ranging from protests against police brutality to eulogies for departed friends and playful celebrations of urban life, Johnson's use of Jamaican dialect to tackle distinctly British subjects contributed to a revolution in the notion of literary English. This 'Selected Poems' charts the unique literary talent of one of Britain's most influential poets and social critics.

I‘ve read poems by LKJ before but they‘ll always punch you in the gut. This edition has some great footnotes giving context which is important we don‘t forget, although if the violence experienced by African-Americans by cops is anything to go by - today - we are poor and have learnt nothing as a human race.

This book, which should be history, and remains as current as the days in which it was written (1960s/1970s).
