At Seventy: A Journal | May Sarton
6 posts | 4 read | 7 to read
May Sartons honest and engrossing journal of her seventieth year, spent living and working on the Maine coast May Sartons journals are a captivating look at a rich artistic life. In this, her ode to aging, she savors the daily pleasures of tending to her garden, caring for her dogs, and entertaining guests at her beloved Maine home by the sea. Her reminiscences are raw, and her observations are infused with the poetic candor for which Sartonover the course of her decades-long careerbecame known. An enlightening glimpse into a timethe early 1980sand an age, At Seventy is at once specific and universal, providing a unique window into septuagenarian life that readers of all generations will enjoy. At times mournful and at others hopeful, this is a beautiful memoir of the year in which Sarton, looking back on it all, could proclaim, I am more myself than I have ever been.

Pickpick

The caption captures how I feel about this book. I‘m a Sarton fan & still plan to read all her books.I relate to much of her life perspective & the journal includes gems of wisdom. But, her behavior during this year bothered me. She seemed to lack insight into her actions, doing the same things over and over that bothered her & then complaining about it. Guess she was honest but I wanted to pull her aside & say: “Why do you keep this up?” ⭐️⭐️⭐️

To remain in the flow of my thought process about my age and stage and to remain in the company of an intriguing woman, I decided to read this. It was such a great choice. It is so delightful.

BookNAround I love May Sarton. 5y

What I expected was a journal about nature and living on the coast of Maine. Sarton‘s postings were thin on the natural world and rich on social and writing engagements. Not to my liking.

DrSabrinaMoldenReads You may have liked it more if you had started with her earlier books. It‘s like I already know her which helps me like it more than you did. 5y
Dolly Of course, it probably wasn‘t the best ‘getting to know you‘ book. Thanks for that comment and with that I may try more of her writing. 5y
readinginthedark 🤔 Have you tried reading Aldo Leopold? 5y

Starting this today with a little visitor. Seems totally appropriate with Sarton‘s journal. This may be the author I‘ve been searching for since I read Greener Pastures several decades ago. Fingers crossed.

Dolly @Suet624 That‘s okay. I assumed spell check grabbed the keyboard same as it does to me! 🤓 5y

Everyone who lives alone of whatever age should have a cat or a kitten. -- May Sarton

I've always kept a journal and love reading other people's journals. I read most of May Sarton's journals a long time ago but someone mentioned her the other day so I decided to see which ones are available on Overdrive.

In this one she writes about her life in Maine with her dog Tamas and cat Bramble, gardening, friends, books...

Also I cooked fish. 😊

DrSabrinaMoldenReads I loved "Journal of a Solitude" @Jinjer 7y
