All Things Violent
All Things Violent | Nikki Dolson
2 posts | 2 read
Laura Park, the narrator of Dolson's dark first novel, meets her future boss, Simon Pritchard of Pritchard Investigations, over a dead body one night on a road outside Las Vegas, Nev. The body belongs to thug Jimmy MacAvoy. Laura has just stabbed Jimmy in the chest multiple times because he was responsible for the death of her best friend, Fiona, who overdosed on drugs. Laura suggests Simon call the cops, but instead he takes her under his wing and makes her part of his team of assassins-and his girlfriend. Brutal Frank Joyce trains Laura to become a professional killer. Even after Simon dumps her for the more upscale Marjorie Adams, Laura continues as both his employee and occasional lover. Simon, Frank, and her assignments test Laura to the utmost. Anyone can become a target, loyalties can shift in a blink, and when everyone is homicidal, people are going to die, possibly even Laura. Dolson's wicked if somewhat contrived thriller lives up to its ominous title.

Bailedbailed

I just couldn‘t finish this one. The premise was interesting but I just couldn‘t make myself care about any of the characters or how this will turn out. One of my reading resolutions was to drop books I‘m not liking w/o guilt. Thank u, next.

hermyknee Yes! Book bailing is my favorite. Took me a while to get there, too - but there are too many good books out there to waste times on the ones we aren‘t in to. 5y
AlaMich Isn‘t weird how we can feel so guilty about DNF‘ing a book? I‘ve thought about it and can‘t figure out why. Especially because I borrow about 80% of my books from the library, so it‘s not even like I wasted money on them. But I‘ve gotten better about bailing. 5y
riversong153 @AlaMich totally weird because if I don‘t like something I‘m watching on tv, I just turn it off or change the channel without a second thought! 5y

AlaMich @riversong153 it might be because reading requires time and effort, and I suppose people are more reluctant to feel that they‘ve wasted them. TV requires no effort and little time so... 5y
riversong153 @AlaMich I never thought of it like that, you‘re right! Here‘s to a year of bailing on books we don‘t like and picking up more that we do like. 🥂 5y
