Madness Under the Royal Palms
Madness Under the Royal Palms: Love and Death Behind the Gates of Palm Beach | Laurence Leamer
3 posts | 5 read | 3 to read
Love, lust, and fatal hatreds inside America's most exclusive enclave of wealth and privilege--Palm Beach. Bernard Madoff's Ponzi scheme devastated the eternally sunny world of Palm Beach, bringing down multimillionaires and destroying once-wealthy widows. The South Florida island and its rarified life suddenly found itself at the epicenter of the scandal, with this strange universe of wealth and privilege under an unrelenting spotlight. Now, in Madness Under the Royal Palms, Laurence Leamer shows us--as no one else has--this world of the megawealthy, which he calls "as hidden a place as I have ever resided." Digging deep, he hits a dark well of conflicting ambitions--right up to and including murder--much darker than the sky-blue weather and sunny Lily Pulitzer prints most of us associate with Palm Beach.

Pickpick

Since living in South Florida, I‘ve attempted to stay away from the Palm Beach area for a many reasons. This book, well researched and interesting, has supported every reason I stayed away. Extreme greed, narcissism, silicone and plastic surgery are rampant in one of the wealthiest areas in the United States. The values that these Uber rich have are the antithesis of me. I liked the book, but the details of these people‘s lives were cringeworthy.

I lived near these palms for about eight years - two decades ago. That familiarity grabbed my eye at the bookstore today. But, ultimately, it wasn't rated well enough to spend money to buy.

BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen Here are my rules for an actual buy. (#rebelgirlshaverules) 1) Must be on my GR TBR list. 2) Must be rated at least 3.5, preferably 3.7 or higher on GR. 3) Bargain pricing (edited) 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @BookMaven407 Thanks - I'm looking at the library instead of my own shelves! 😜 6y

#RiotGrams Day 7: #MyLocalLibrary

This is the library closest to me in downtown West Palm Beach. It's a city library and the parking is awful, so I most often go to a county branch instead, but it was a beautiful and welcome addition to our downtrodden city several years ago.
