The Annotated Peter Pan (The Centennial Edition) (The Annotated Books)
The Annotated Peter Pan (The Centennial Edition) (The Annotated Books) | J. M. Barrie
6 posts | 5 read | 4 to read
"Peter Pan is a great and refining and uplifting benefaction to this sordid and money-mad age."Mark Twain One hundred years after J. M. Barrie published the novel Peter and Wendy, Maria Tatar revisits a story that, like Alice in Wonderland, bridges the generations, animating both adults and children with its kinetic energy. The adventures of the Darling children with Peter Pan and Tinkerbell in Neverland are the seminal tale of escape and fantasy. Inspired by Barrie's real-life adventures with the five Llewelyn Davies boys he adopted, the story of Peter Pan has a deep and controversial history of its own that comes alive in Tatar's new edition. This brilliantly designed volumewith period photographs, full-color images by iconic illustrators, commentary on stage and screen versions, and an array of supplementary material, including Barrie's screenplay for a silent filmwill draw readers into worlds of incandescent beauty, flooding them with the radiance of childhood wonder and the poignancy of what we lose when we grow up.

I have a weakness for the annotated series of books & I own several of them. I had never read Peter Pan prior to encountering it in the annotated volume, but it was a delight to see all the mutations Barrie's work underwent. From Peter Pan's initial cameo in The Little White Bird to a successful stage play to a subsequent full novelization, complete with the iconic Arthur Rackham illustrations👇

vivastory The cultural afterlife of the book is just as interesting & as is often the case with classic stories, the novel is richer & stranger than one might expect. Thanks for the tag @batsy ! I tag @leftcoastzen @merelybookish @bookwomble @graywacke

merelybookish Those sounds great! It is cool how books evolve! And thanks for the tag. 2y
batsy I love your point about the cultural afterlife of books, especially classics and children's classics. I might have read abridged versions as a kid—and the versions in those Disney Story a Day collections—but it's occurred to me that I've never actually read the original! 2y

vivastory @merelybookish There are some great entries in the annotated series! I also really liked The Frankenstein vol. & I have my eye on the recent Mrs. Dalloway with notes by Merve Emre & an amazing edition of The Arabian Nights. 2y
vivastory @batsy It's a pretty quick read. I def. recommend it! 2y
Branwen I have the annotated edition of Mrs Dalloway and it's absolutely glorious! 2y

This edition is beautiful, and includes a lot of interesting materials and commentary - but I cannot recommend the story itself. I was familiar with Peter Pan, but had never read the actual story. In anticipation of reading Lost Boy, I decided to read it and was so disappointed. Even accounting for the time in which it was written, the blatant sexism and racism is off-putting.

SinkLikeTheMoon That's a shame. It does look beautiful though! 6y
mabell @MayginReads Had a great blog post about Peter Pan and racism in the classics in general. Very insightful! https://notquitealiterarycritique.wordpress.com/2018/07/19/peter-pan-a-reflectio... 6y
GeekGirlOnAQuest @mabell Thanks for the link! I‘ve been doing some reading on that since I finished Peter Pan. 6y

Peter Pan is one of my favorite #childrensbook & the tagged edition contains Arthur Rackham's illustrations. IMO Rackham's work is as impressive as John Tenniel's.

Bookwomble I love Arthur Rackham's illustrations - these ones are lovely. I've got an edition of Poe stories with Rackham artwork, which show his ability to capture the grotesque as well as the whimsical. 6y
vivastory @Bookwomble I will definitely be looking into those! Sounds fantastic! 6y

If you like the story of Peter Pan, this edition rocks as if has all sorts of great additional material. Unfortunately, I've decided that the story of Peter Pan just isn't my cup of tea at all.

EchoLogical And that's okay! 😉 I feel the same way about Alice in Wonderland. I've read and hated so many retellings that I've come to the conclusion that I don't like the original. Lol 6y
Debiw781 @EchoLogical I actually have Alice in Wonderland checked out from the library, similar annotated version. I'm afraid it's going to end the same way 😂 6y
Mdargusch Great illustrations though! 6y
Debiw781 @Mdargusch yes, the illustrations are why I made it as far as I did in the book. 6y

Peter Pan is one of my favorite literary characters, and the Annotated Peter Pan contains a lot of new-to-me info. Does anyone else love learning new things about your favorites, or do you prefer to keep extra knowledge to a minimum?
