Murder on the Eiffel Tower
Murder on the Eiffel Tower: A Victor Legris Mystery | Claude Izner
13 posts | 10 read | 10 to read
The brand-new, shiny Eiffel Tower is the pride and glory of the 1889 World Exposition. But one sunny afternoon, as visitors are crowding the viewing platforms, a woman collapses and dies on this great Paris landmark. Can a bee sting really be the cause of death? Or is there a more sinister explanation? Enter young bookseller Victor Legris. Present on the tower at the time of the incident, and appalled by the media coverage of the occurrence, he is determined to find out what actually happened. In this dazzling evocation of late nineteenth-century Paris, we follow Victor as his investigation takes him all over the city and he suspects an ever-changing list of possible perpetrators. Could mysterious Kenji Mori, his surrogate father and business partner at the bookstore Legris operates, be involved in the crime? Why are beautiful Russian illustrator Tasha and her colleagues at the newly launched sensationalist newspaper Passepartout always up-to-date in their reporting? And what will Legris do when the deaths begin to multiply and he is caught in a race against time? Murder on the Eiffel Tower is painstakingly researched, an effortless evocation of the glorious City of Light, and an exciting opening to a promising series of eight books featuring Victor Legris.

This takes place during the 1889 Paris Exposition. The protagonist is a bookseller/amateur detective. I stopped halfway through when he spies on a woman he‘s become obsessed with and sees her hugging and laughing with another man. He declares she‘s a whore then a few pages later purchases a nude painting she posed for. I nearly threw the book across the room! Hard to believe written by two women; something was definitely lost in translation.

Love when I get my #LMPBC books back and can read all of the notes. Thanks for a great round!

I finished my last #lmpbc book for this round a few days ago. I‘ll get it in the mail early next week when I get back from my honeymoon. I liked this one but it took awhile to get going and I didn‘t like many of the characters. I did end up wanting to know #whodunit though and I did not figure it out before the end. @Jerdencon @robinb @Bookwormjillk

I read this first in series in my #LMPBC GroupM for Round 9. I had read number 6 in #whodunitthesequel and was glad to go back to the beginning with this one. Unfortunately neither book did much for me. While the mystery was good, I didn‘t really care for the characters, and the writing didn‘t flow smoothly, with some abrupt changes in place/narrative (which could have been due to translation issues). 3/5⭐️

Starting my last #lmpbc #round9 book tonight. It looks as though this will be the book I‘m in the middle of when we get married next Saturday. I do love a good mystery and this one looks fantastic!

Got done with work on time, and moved to the porch with a mug of tea. Rain just started. These are the days that make telecommuting seem like a really good idea.

Escaping to Paris 1889 this early evening. Enjoying blue skies, refreshing breeze. Interrupting my bliss to get a glass of wine. 🍷All is well.

shanebeth happy summer! 🌞😎 7y
Tnovo I really really wanted to like this book and this series...was a DNF for me many years ago. Is it working for you? Should I give it another go? I ❤️ historical fiction. (edited) 7y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Pretty pic!! 7y
kspenmoll @Tnovo Finished the book. I did think it could have been shortened in places, & at times found Victor irritating, tedious. But scenes of Paris, exhibition & multi cultural markets with inferences regarding colonialism, imperialism, paternalism of the time, treating colonists as "pets" oddities, etc that came through interested me ( history major). Mystery not so much. 7y

Stealing a few moments to begin this mystery set during the 1889 Universal Exposition in Paris. Beautiful sunny, breezy day. Off to a soccer game soon- regretfully.#ratherread.
