A Friend from England
A Friend from England | Anita Brookner
1 post | 1 read | 1 to read
In one of her most delicate and suspenseful novels to date, Anita Brookner brings us an exquisite story of friendship and duty. Rachel Kennedy and Oscar Livingston were not precisely friends or family. Rachel had been acquanted with Oscar for some time, first as her fathers accountant, and then as her own. Part owner of a London bookshop, Rachel is thoroughly independent and somewhat distant, determinedly restrained in her feelings for others, but above all responsible. And it is this trait that leads Oscar and his wife Dorrie to seek out Rachel as a mentor for their twenty-seven-year-old daughter, Heather. Yet when Heather seems poised to make an unsuitable romantic decision, Rachel decides to speak out and intervene, causing an unwitting and devastating insight.

My current read and a random grab from my Anita Brookner shelf. I have so many that I‘ve bought for cheap from charity book sales that I just grab a couple, read the first pages, and decide which one grabs my attention at the moment.

Here‘s the latest winner. 😆

LeslieO 💖Brookner! 2y
Tamra Sounds like a good strategy! 2y
jlhammar Sounds really good. I've been meaning to try Brookner for ages. I have Look at Me, Hotel du Lac and The Rules of Engagement on my shelves. Not sure which I should go for first. 2y

LeahBergen @jlhammar I loved Hotel du Lac! And I have those other two titles waiting as well. 😆 2y
Cathythoughts I must read or even reread one of hers soon. She‘s so good 🥰 (edited) 2y
LeahBergen @Cathythoughts I know! I always wonder why I‘ve waited so long when I pick up another of her books. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y
Centique I love her too and I‘m only up to 3. I love your strategy for reading her! 2y
LeahBergen @Centique I liked the idea of random picking for her books as I sometimes get a little too “set in my ways”. For example, I‘m reading through Barbara Pym‘s books in publication order. 😆 2y
