Sarah's writing style is so beautiful and inviting. The pictures she paints with her words completely captured my heart right from the introduction, and so much of what she shared resonated with me. There is a sweetness to this book that is evident as she shares her story and the heart of Jesus for the church. Highly recommend. It‘s a soul-refreshing read.

Who knew book blogs were so controversial 🤣😂

Even Paul‘s Recommendation that women should ask their husbands if they had questions was revolutionary for that time period. He was encouraging women to learn! to ask questions, to seek out answers, to fully participate in the community.

I expected something more substantial. This was very "feminism light" and cishet/gender binary focused. There were MANY places where she made great points that could embrace LGBTQ folks, but every*single*time she neglected to extend her language to cover the community. It ended up feeling exclusive. I also didn't click with the evangelical tone and toward the end, overly emotive Christianese. By the last 2 chapters, I couldn't wait for it to end.

While I agree wholeheartedly with Bessey's thoughts - that the labels "Christian" and "feminist" are not mutually exclusive - this book fell a bit short for me. I think I was expecting a bit more Biblical analysis and study rather than memoir.

I would recommend it as an introduction to Christian feminism rather than an in depth study. She cites some interesting sources that I would like to check out.

This post really spoke to my soul. I've been told so often that I'm "too much". God didn't create me as too much, He created me exactly how He intended. Loving this reflection from the lovely @Caterina and really loving the work our collective is putting out.

This is an affirming, fluffy, uplifting celebration of women in the church that would be a lovely starting place for Christian women seeking feminism in the church. It's a theological memoir, with Bessey sharing from her own life while referencing theologians and the Bible. It is not academic, but listening to it was like sinking into a warm bubble bath. 3.5/5. Just finished this one on my lunch break. Many of you have asked what I think, and for right now I've gotta say...I need to take time to talk to Jesus and reflect on what I have learned. There may be a post in the near future, maybe not. But I can say this: God has called us...all of us, not just women...to so much more. I am praying for the Holy Spirit to move and for me to faithfully follow. I wanna be a part of this Plan!

There was a lot of good here, but there was little that was new to me. I wanted more depth, and more of the "invitation to revisit the Bible's view of women." There were some moving personal stories, a great call for women to live out their callings without culturally-imposed restrictions, and I loved the connections Bessey makes between justice, feminism, and faith. But the writing just wasn't my style... it felt way too flowery & overdone.

I appreciated this book, but I kept wanting more. It was warm, uplifting, and affirming, but I couldn't help wanting a little more depth or even some grit. I would have liked references to more Biblical examples and more depth in those mentioned for readers who are not already familiar with the stories. I also would have appreciated more real world stories of women making a mark on the world today through their ministry.

Can I just tell you guys how much I love Hoopla? A really really lot. I've been sick this past week, and I spent most of the weekend on the couch blowing my nose and reading through the rest of my month's Hoopla checkouts in comics. In between the comics and the congestion, I also discovered a TON of books on Hoopla that are on the "don't own yet" section of my #TBR. Including this audiobook, which I started on my way to work this morning. ??

Besides The Bible (obviously), a book has never defined my faith more. And today it's on sale for $3.99 in the Kindle store. Sarah Besser posted that she's never seen it this low before! Grab it while you can. It's so good yall. So good.

Marching with all my sisters today in spirit 💕 and this book couldn't help to come to mind. Hurray for Christian feminist writers who make me feel less alone.

I kinda blew my goal out of the water. Life changes allowed more reading time but I'm ok with that in hindsight. These are my top rated books for the year. I'm thinking 120 for 2017. #goodreadschallenge

Could it be harder hitting? Yep. But it is very inclusive of anyone who may disagree. She works hard and succeeds to keep the book positive and forward looking. No matter what side of the complimentarian/egalitarian debate you fall, you should give this book a chance.
