Hard Choices
Hard Choices: Financial Exclusion, Fringe Banks and Poverty in Urban Canada | Jerry Buckland
7 posts
When low-income city dwellers lack access to mainstream banking services, many end up turning to fringe banks, such as cheque-cashers and pawnshops, for some or all of their financial transactions. This predicament of financial exclusion faced by those underserved by conventional financial institutions is comprehensively examined in Jerry Buckland's powerful study, Hard Choices. The first account of the nature and causes of financial exclusion in Canada, Hard Choices thoroughly integrates economic and social data on consumer choice, bank behaviour, and government policy. Buckland demonstrates why the current two-tier system of banking is becoming increasingly dysfunctional, especially in the context of new credit products that aggravate income inequality and stifle local economic growth. Featuring a foreword by esteemed economics scholar John P. Caskey, Hard Choices presents pragmatic policy improvements on both the public and private levels that can promote and build financial inclusion for all.

An Audible sale is awesome, but OMG I get so overwhelmed!! I‘m really picky about audiobooks...the book itself has to be good—obviously—but the narrator has to be just right. There‘s an art to it, know what I mean? 😉
#bookwormproblems

Birdsong28 Is this on in the UK? 😀📚📖 5y
AlaMich @Birdsong28 I don‘t know. I checked out the UK site but because I‘m not a member of that Audible, it doesn‘t show member promotions. 5y
Birdsong28 @AlaMich Thanks for replying. It's not on the UK as I'm a member and can't see it anywhere 📚📖 5y
AlaMich @Birdsong28 no problem! 😊 5y

@Bambolina_81 so soon there will be next 1st of a month. Should we start another buddy read? And if so, which one you would prefer?

#tbrbingo

Bambolina_81 How about Father Brown? 😊😎 7y
Sarah83 @Bambolina_81 that's great. I own a book compilation of four books. What edition do you have? 7y

Sarah83 @Bambolina_81 it's a German side, but if you scroll down, there are also the English titles. I have all five books, the first book includes book one and two. So my book contains 'the innocence of Father Brown' and 'the wisdom of Father Brown'. My books are also in this order. 7y
Bambolina_81 I have: The Innocence of Father Brown, The Wisdom of Father Brown,The Incredulity of FB, The Secret of FB, The Scandal of FB, The Donnington Affair, The Mask of Midas 7y
Sarah83 @Bambolina_81 should we start with the innocence and look how we like it? 7y
Bambolina_81 @Sarah83 Sounds like a good idea to me 😊 7y
Sarah83 @Bambolina_81 great. Start at the 1st? One story a day? 7y
Bambolina_81 Let's do it! 7y
Sarah83 @Bambolina_81 Sounds great. At Agatha you're reading 'the man with the brown suit'? 7y
Bambolina_81 @Sarah83 I just ordered my copy today and it should arrive tomorrow 😊 Can you get that one? 7y
Sarah83 @Bambolina_81 I just have a look, if I have it in the cellar. My mum collected them some time ago. 7y
Sarah83 @Bambolina_81 I'm out for this time. My mum doesn't have a copy and I can't order it. 😑 Maybe I visit a second hand book shop next month and find it there. 7y
Bambolina_81 @Sarah83 I can send you my copy when I'm done? 7y
Sarah83 @Bambolina_81 no hurry. I'm having holiday from 3.10. up to 16.10. maybe I find a German edition. 😏 7y

VOTE IN THE COMMENTS! From experience, coolest cover, or go with your gut. My Audible credit is in your hands!

The Rise of Ransom City - Weird west sequel. The forces of the Line (demon trains) vs. the Gun (demon... guns)

The Just City - Time-traveling goddess creates perfect society of thinkers. Then Sokrates shows up.

The Violent Century - "Watchmen on crack" says blurb. What happens to our superhuman soldiers after WWII?

PLEASE VOTE!

LeahBergen I think you should try The Violent Century! 7y
Cinfhen I'm with the Canadian @LeahBergen choice 7y

Dogearedcopy LOL, You managed to pick three titles narrated by no one I've ever listened to before! So, listening to the samples, I would go with 'The Violent City' (narrated by Jonathan Keeble) 🙂🎧 7y
RealBooks4ever The Rise of Ransom City! Read it before you forget what happened in the first book! 📚 7y
Zelma No opinion but I would like you to start writing book blurbs professionally. Or at least do all of my books. 😂 7y
Gezemice You had me at "time-traveling goddess" 7y
Karkar You had me at "watchmen on crack" ? 7y
batsy The Just City! Because Socrates always seems to show up when everyone was doing just fine 7y
SpiderCrafts The Just City - It sounds like my best pick, from all of these sounding cool to read! 7y
readinginthedark Ooh! I haven't heard of any of these; can't wait to see what you pick/review! 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @Zelma Thanks! If Litsy has taught me anything, it's that I take a strange pleasure in distilling a book into its essence. (edited) 7y

Prairiegirl_reading I hate this! This has been happening to me for the past couple weeks! It's driving me around the bend honestly. I'm forcing myself to read Olive Kitteridge because it's my book club pick but I'm looking for something a little bit different from what I've been reading lately. 7y
Coleen Ha! I love this post. YES!!! 7y
Jinjer Yaaaaas!!! 7y
Jinjer @Prairiegirl_reading I LOVED OLIVE K! 7y
Prairiegirl_reading @Jinjer I'm finding it depressing. I started it right after Sula which wasn't exactly sunshine either so I'm needing some fun! 7y
