Marta! Big & Small
Marta! Big & Small | Jen Arena
2 posts | 2 read | 2 to read
Marta is una niña, an ordinary girl . . . with some extraordinary animal friends! As Marta explores the jungle, she knows she's bigger than a bug, smaller than an elephant, and faster than a turtle. But then she meets the snake, who thinks Marta is sabrosa—tasty, very tasty! But Marta is ingeniosa, a very clever girl, and she outsmarts the snake with hilarious results. With simple Spanish and a glossary at the end, this fun read-aloud picture book, Marta! Big and Small, teaches little ones to identify opposites and animals and learn new words. Amazing. This simple picture book, appropriate enough for toddlers, manages to not only teach about language with its English/Spanish text, but also covers concepts like opposites, animals, and point of view. This would be fantastic for storytime, with its short length, exciting twist, and wonderful lesson that how others see you is all a matter of perspective.

"Clever like a girl." Yep, I have a new favorite #storytime book.

It's short enough for toddlers, illustrates concepts like fast and slow, and has Spanish words on every page. It also has a little bit of tension and great resolution. It was storytime magic.
I can't wait to see more from this author.

Anabnieto How does it work? Random Spanish words? I am looking for books for my 5 year old in Spanish (he has a good command of the language) but I am afraid that scattered words in a sentence can only be confusing 7y
BookInMyHands @Anabnieto It's very well done: "Marta is una niña... an ordinary girl." "To an elephant Marta is pequena... small very small." Then later on the animal names are in Spanish. My kids (6 & 8) are in Dual Language classrooms. The kindergartener loved it and the 8 year-old helped me with my pronunciation before storytime (I'm learning). However, you might try Elephant and Piggie books by Mo Willems in Spanish. Or Monica Brown stories. 7y
Anabnieto No Willems in Spanish! That is great I will search for those!! Thanks a lot. If you have more suggestions....keep me posted, please. Gracias! 7y
