7 posts | 3 read
The Bloodline Feud: an omnibus edition of the first two novels in Charles Stross's The Merchant Princes series The six families of the Clan rule the kingdom of Gruinmarkt from behind the scenes. They are a mixture of nobility and criminal conspirators whose power to walk between their world and ours makes them rich in both. Miriam, a hip tech journalist from Boston, discovers her alternate-world relatives with explosive results that shake three worlds. Now, as the prodigal Countess Helge Thorold-Hjorth, she finds herself ensnared in schemes and plots centuries in the making. She is surrounded by unlikely allies, lethal contraband, andmost dangerous of allher family. To avoid a slippery slope down to an unmarked grave, Miriam must build a power base of her ownwith unexpected consequences for three different time lines, including the quasi-Victorian one exploited by the hidden family. I took a wee break from THE BLOODLINE FEUD once I got the end of what used to be the first book. (This is supposedly a revised mash-up of two shorter books, but there‘s enough recap at the start of what used to be Book Two that I dunno how much revision actually occurred.) Now I‘m back in and excited to finish it. It‘s a cool blend of portal fantasy and social SF with an emphasis on economics.

I put THE BLOODLINE FEUD aside for the Readathon because I still had 2/3 left and I didn‘t think I‘d want to binge it—then the two long chapters I read right at the end of the event set up some TOTALLY BINGEWORTHY developments.

Guess I know what I‘m doing tomorrow.

Tonight, I‘m at just over 12 hours of reading time for my 27th Readathon. I can live with that. I‘m gonna try to sleep. #deweyoct #readathon

Last night I plucked another book off my fast-dwindling digital freebies stack. For some reason, I always thought this was far-future SF, but it starts in 2002. Huh.

It also sailed right on through the three chapter test, so while I can‘t say FOR SURE I‘ll stick with it, its chances look good. It feels like 70s SF filtered through an early-2000s sensibility. Good times.

I‘m gonna post a book (or series) from my TBR every day until I‘ve shared the lot. No descriptions. No explanations. Just a whole bunch of books I haven‘t read yet.

This is Day 28.
