Drunks: An American History | Christopher Finan
3 posts | 1 read | 2 to read
A social history of alcoholism in the United States, from the seventeenth century to the present day Today, millions of Americans are struggling with alcoholism, but millions are also in long-term recovery. Alcoholics Anonymous and a growing number of recovery organizations are providing support for alcoholics who will face the danger of relapse for the rest of their lives. We have finally come to understand alcoholism as a treatable illness, rather than a moral failure. Todays advocates can draw inspiration from the victories of sober drunks throughout American history. Christopher Finan recounts the nations history with alcohol and its search for sobriety, which began among Native Americans in the colonial period, when liquor was used to cheat them of their property. He introduces us to the first of a colorful cast of characters, a remarkable Iroquois leader named Handsome Lake, who dedicated his life to helping his people renounce hard liquor. And we meet Carrie Nation, the wife of an alcoholic who destroyed bars with an ax in her anger over what alcohol had done to her family, as well as the idealistic and energetic Washingtonians, reformed drunks who led the first national movement to save men like themselves. Finan also tells the dramatic story of Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith, the two drunks who helped each other stay sober and then created AA, which survived its tumultuous early years and has made it possible for millions of men and women to quit drinking. This is narrative history at its best: entertaining and authoritative, an important portrait of one of Americas great liberation movements.

Mehso-so

I wanted more about the social history of alcoholism, this is a history of American attempts to cure/treat alcoholism. I did learn that Native Americans where the first Americans to come up with treatment (and be successful for a large group of ppl), that sharing stories has been used since the founding to help others, and that high quality research has shown that TSP, CBT, and MET, are all equally effective. 2/5 stars. Needs more citations

Avanders 🤔 sounds interesting, but I might prefer that kind of data in list form 😆 5y
iread2much @Avanders it was interesting, but I agree, could have been reduced a bit better. It was along slog, and honestly I skipped at least half of it 😅 5y

Ok Littens, guess this means if you have had a few ,resist the temptation to go to Book Outlet, Amazon, B&N etc. on your device .🥃🍷🍸🍺This story was on Channel 7 L.A. app.

Rachbb3 Is it because drinking makes you hungry and you buy out the store? 😂 6y
Leftcoastzen @Rachbb3 True , all those cookies seem more tempting in the market, but this segment implied you might go online and buy your whole amazon wish list , or Powell‘s wish list . And some folks on some sites already have credit card on file and one click ordering set up. Don‘t even have to be sober enough to type in the card number . 😂 6y
Rachbb3 Oh no! Lol. Yeah, I can see that happening. 6y

Picked this up at Winter Institute for a friend but I'm going to give it a whirl first because there's nothing wrong with a pre-enjoyed book gift, right? And besides, the author signed it to me so I feel obligated. 😉
