A Box of Matches
A Box of Matches | Nicholson Baker
5 posts | 5 read | 2 to read
Emmett has a wife and two children, a cat, and a duck, and he wants to know what life is about. Every day he gets up before dawn, makes a cup of coffee in the dark, lights a fire with one wooden match, and thinks. What Emmett thinks about is the subject of this wise and closely observed novel, which covers vast distances while moving no further than Emmetts hearth and home. Nicholson Bakers extraordinary ability to describe and celebrate life in all its rich ordinariness has never been so beautifully achieved. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Mehso-so

The problem with this book is that it is extremely well written but utterly boring.
Every morning the narrator gets up before dawn to drink a cup of coffee and reflect on the banal every day things that happen to him in his journal. That's it.

Panpan

Part introspective, charming, and wise ... the daily routine of waking up, starting a fire, and thinking out loud to yourself is therapeutic. But I felt like it never went anywhere. It was just a minutiae carousel that goes round and round until you end up realizing, isn't going anywhere. The parts that are good are enjoyable, but overall, not for me.

Bailedbailed

If you judge a book by its cover you may miss the opportunity to read a really great book. In my case, sometimes if you judge a book by its cover you may end up picking a book that is totally not right for you. This is the first time I‘ve bailed on a book but I just couldn‘t find an overall purpose or meaning for this one. Have any of you read this before?

candority I haven‘t read it, but good for you on bailing for the first time! It never gets easier (at least it hasn‘t for me), but some books just aren‘t worth the time and energy. 5y
Courtneyjo_reads @candority I almost made myself finish it but I truly wasn‘t interested and I did feel like it was a waste of my time — it was really hard to do, though! I don‘t like giving up lol 5y
ACriner I've never figured out how to bail on books. I can't cou t the time I've lost trying to force myself through a book that just wasn't for me. Maybe some day I'll master it. 5y

Bailedbailed

12.4.18 I‘ve never actually bailed on a book before. But after 140 pages and not one impression of a plot or purpose I ditched this book. It seemed like more of an uninteresting personal journal to me.
