Civilianized
Civilianized: A Young Veteran's Memoir | Michael Anthony
3 posts | 2 read | 2 to read
After 12 months of military service in Iraq, Michael Anthony stepped off a plane, seemingly happy to be home—or at least back on US soil. He was 21 years old, a bit of a nerd, and carrying a pack of cigarettes that he thought would be his last. Two months later, Michael was stoned on Vicodin, drinking way too much, and picking a fight with a very large Hell’s Angel. At his wit’s end, he came to an agreement with himself: If things didn’t improve in three months, he was going to kill himself. Civilianized is a memoir chronicling Michael’s search for meaning in a suddenly destabilized world.

This feels like an appropriate read for Memorial Day, a day to remember those who "gave their tomorrows so we could have today." (Not sure who to attribute this quote to as it seems to be an inversion of poet John Maxwell Edmonds' famous line.)

This was such a good book. So many of my family members, friends, and students are suffering or have suffered from PTSD. This book goes a long way to helping me understand, and making me thankful not to understand completely. Anyone who knows anyone who has been on active duty should read this book 📚 plus, there are a ton of great books scattered throughout the story. Highly recommended for the book about war in the book riot #readharderchallenge
