Michigan Place Names
Michigan Place Names: The History of the Founding and the Naming of More Than Five Thousand Past and Present Michigan Communities | Walter Romig
2 posts
From Aabec in Antrim County to Zutphen in Ottawa County, from Hell to Hooker, Michigan Place Names is a compendium of information on the origins of the state's geographical names. With alphabetically arranged thumb-nail sketches, Walter Romig introduces readers to a host of colorful personalities and episodes which have achieved notoriety, though sometimes shortlived, by devising or lending their names to the state's settlements. Romig spent more than ten years researching and documenting the entries to which he added an extensive bibliography of sources and an index of the personal names used in the text. For the curious, the librarian, the genealogist, or the historian, his book is an indispensable resource. Michigan Place Names is another "Michigan classic" reissued as a Great Lakes Book.

Question for all my Litsy friends! My parents just moved to Ann Arbor, MI and I am visiting them this next week. Are there any great places in the area that I should visit? Bookish or otherwise?

Thanks friends! 💙📚😬💜

BookNAround There are a ton of great independent bookstores in Ann Arbor! And since I love cheese, I always hit Zingerman‘s Deli to restock my cheese drawer. I don‘t love the sandwiches (overpriced imo) there but generally you can‘t go wrong eating out anywhere in town. (edited) 5y
AmyG The Literati bookstore on Washington St is my favorite. Such a wonderful store owned by a lovely couple. Ann Arbor is an amazing town. We go all the time - we have season football tickets. Sat mornings by Zingermans is the market...produce, vegetables, baked goods, homemade items- amazing. Go Blue! (edited) 5y
Julies_Bookshelf_Adventures @BookNAround and @AmyG thank you so much!! I will definitely be diving into the Literati and other independent bookstores, plus give Zingermans a good visit. I‘ll have a week to explore (and fill up my suitcase) before heading home. 😉 5y
AmyG Check also the U of Michigan. There is an art museum on State St. The campus is beautiful. 5y
