Gut
Gut: The Inside Story of Our Bodys Most Underrated Organ | Giulia Enders
Our gut is almost as important to us as our brain and yet we know very little about how it works.Gut: The Inside Story is an entertaining, informative tour of the digestive system from the moment we raise a tasty morsel to our lips until the moment our body surrenders the remnants to the toilet bowl. No topic is too lowly for the author's wonder and admiration, from the careful choreography of breaking wind to the precise internal communication required for a cleansing vomit. Along the way, the author provides practical advice such as the best ways to sit on the toilet to have a comfortable bowel movement, how clean your kitchen should be for optimum gut health, and how different laxatives work. She tells stories of gut bacteria that can lead to obesity, autoimmune diseases, or even suicide, and she discusses the benefits of dietary supplements such as probiotics. This book is a fascinating primer for anyone interested in how our ideas about the gut are changing in the light of cutting-edge scientific research. In the words of the author, We live in an era in which we are just beginning to understand just how complex the connections are between us, our food, our pets and the microscopic world in, on, and around us. We are gradually decoding processes that we used to believe were part of our inescapable destiny.

This was OK. The chapters on anatomy & physiology, I imagine, would be interesting for a lay audience. The pictures are cute and the tone enthusiastic.

My main beef is that a lot of the teachings are based on speculation and theory. If I didn't already have the background knowledge, this would not have been completely clear.

Also, it's just so... perky!

Worth a read if you'd like to know more about the digestive system. ⭐⭐⭐ 3 stars

A fascinating read. Giulia Enders writes clearly, in a friendly, engaging tone, which makes it easy to understand the science of how our gut works. Lots of take-always (i‘m going to try making sauerkraut 😉) & a new section about the gut-brain link. This science is in its infancy so I expect the book will continue to be updated. I also enjoyed ‘I Contain Multitudes‘ by Ed Yong about bacteria & the gut microbiome.

Tamra I‘ve gotten into fermenting and enjoy it. Yay for kimchi! I also made Fire Cider last fall and have been drinking it every day - lots of good bacteria. (I hope!) 3y

Good book with useful information about our gut. It's filled with interesting facts and tips you can use to improve your health in general. I learnt a lot with this book. Reccomended.

The more sterile a household is, the more its members will suffer from allergies and autoimmune diseases. Thirty years ago, about one person in ten had an allergy; today, that figure is one in three.

Another fascinating audio book that I need to acquire a hard copy for. So many "a-ha" and informative moments, yet I can't remember most of it now. Lol. Information overload. Would recommend, but probably not in audio format.

This was a great journey through inner you and my become my personal journey to a healthy nutritive way of living.
My key insights after that:
- Quality of nutrition, nutrients, and probiotics.
- Wildlife inside me fascinating)
- The complex gut condition may be related to how happy or depressed. That was WOW.
Do recommend to everyone who is interested in a better quality of life and health. We all deserve better, isn't?

I was going to use Where the Crawdads Sing for the swampy category, but then I realized that the human gut is an awfully swampy place, so I could count four different translated titles for the challenge this month.

Finally finished it yesterday. Yupp, it‘s all worth the hype in my eyes. I very much enjoyed it: All the things she brought back from my school time, all the new things I learned. 💗 The narrative tone she presents the subject matter in. 😂 All interesting and worth it. It‘s a definite recommendation.

One of the rare books I will borrow again because I want to come back to some parts.

Sigh, you know this feeling, when you‘re having a day where the universe is just laughing hard at you❓

First, I got a much needed day off tomorrow for accompanying a family member to the doctor. I didn‘t think I‘d be allowed a day off but I was. So: good thing, very happy.

Then: Since about 1,5 hours I know that I myself need to see a doctor tomorrow morning urgently. I am falling ill and will spend most of my night in the bathroom.

If I had a better memory I might still have known all this interesting stuff she is telling about the intestine from my Biology classes. But I don‘t – and this is why I find especially the first half extremely interesting.

I like the popular scientific way with easy-to-follow comparisons/example she explains things with.

Sorry Littens, I‘m too much of a chicken to listen to „Wenn die Gondeln Trauer tragen“ in the evening. Already in the first few minutes it did create such a mysterious, ominous atmosphere that I needed to stop before 20 minutes were over. 🥶😱🙈 So, yes, the audio play is produced very well – but it‘s better for me (and my night sleep) to squeeze in some minutes of fact book to educate myself as soon as it‘s getting dark outside. 🤷🏽‍♀️😇

Look 👀 which audiobook is available for me tomorrow. This fact caught me by surprise because I already had forgotten I put it on hold. I only remember I accidentally discovered it in my online library‘s catalogue and thought about if its publication is long enough ago that “reading” it now no longer counts as following the hype train. 😊

But since I – often in vain – try to integrate more fibres in my food plan I hope for good advice.

Concurrent books dealing with poop. What are the chances? 💩 The passage above is in the tagged book about the human gut. Meanwhile, I had just been listening to descriptions of the ways cow dung is used in purification rituals in certain parts of India … for example, mixed with water and sprayed on surfaces before people sit down to have a meal. 🧐

Interesting and worth to read. This book is written in detail about gut. Learnt so many things. , starting from how pooing works , what is reflux , vomitting, allergies , microbes in Gut. At times I felt there are many medical terms for which we need to search in internet.

This book is fascinating. Might try this on the first day of school. Haha! “There are tablets and medicated chewing gum that prevent travel sickness by numbing the nerves of the gut. When the nausea abates, feelings of anxiety often disappear, too. If unaccountable grumpiness or anxiety can originate in the gut (even without nausea), is it possible that these drugs could be used to banish them? By temporarily numbing a troubled gut, so to speak?”

brilliantglow That book was such an interesting read! I really enjoyed it 5y

This book has been on my TBR for a while and it‘s fascinating. I enjoyed the narration, but I may look up the text sometime for the illustrations. For me, the most interesting parts were about gut bacteria and the human microbiome, but all of it kept my attention while being humorous and clearly understandable.

I finished listening while on a short #audiowalk beside our flooded fields. The river is back up a bit today.

3,5/5 stars for this one! It was very scientific, but understandable and enjoyable, way more enjoyable than I thought it would be. It's all about how the gut works and our whole digestive system, and this new knowledge helps me understand the normal order of business in the stomach and also my IBS a little better. It was a good read, glad I picked it up!

Giulia Enders takes anatomy and physiology and makes them accessible to regular folks. Written based on a talk she gave while in medical school, and it has a conversational tone. But it‘s also packed with interesting facts and suggestions to improve your gut health. You might have a few “blech” moments—worms and barf are discussed, among others. But mostly it‘s good science made easy to digest. Pun intended.

Gut by Giulia Enders. I really enjoyed this one. Enders explores the inner workings of our digestive system from when food, drinks, and germs enter through outlet mouth to when they exit. Minor trigger warning for those that are a bit squeamish, and probably not a good idea to read while eating.
