Catsandbooks How is the new fraiser series? My husband and I love the original! 4mo
OriginalCyn620 @Catsandbooks I love the OG too! The new series is different, as Frazier has moved back to Boston, so there‘s new characters. And Freddy is all grown up. I thought it was really funny and well done! 4mo

Not really a #creepychristmasswap aesthetic, but here‘s December to me. Cozy drinks, reading, a little booze, crafts, Christmas movies (some horror as well), games, PJs, and snow.
My family was really big on Christmas Eve. That‘s when we would have our big Polish/Ukrainian meal with the whole family. Christmas Day was about lounging around. We also ❤️ our stockings. Those little gifts and treats were just as good (almost) than our presents.

#TeamFestivus – time to kick off our #wintergames movie discussion. And please let me know if you watched the movie.

First Q: George was always willing to help others to the point of sacrificing his own dreams. But he thought of giving up when he feared the Building & Loan would be shut down. Later we discover that Mary sent word through town that George was in trouble & needed help. Why do you think George didn‘t simply ask for help?

wanderinglynn Remember, you get 25 pts for watching the movie. And then it‘s 5 pts per comment. All discussion will happen in this post. 😀❤️🎄💚🎥 4y
ads0123 I watched the movie last night!! 4y
ChasingOm I‘ve watched it! And I think that asking for help is hard for some people because they like to be the one who solves problems versus the one having problems (despite the fact that we all have the capacity to both have and solve!). 4y

OnlyYoo Classic Christmas movie! Def one of my favorites (I‘m not in the point thing but I just wanted to say how much I love this movie!) 4y
Deblovestoread I watched it while wrapping presents last weekend. I think problem solvers often view it as a sign of weakness to have to ask for help. And to George who gave up all his dreams to help others he might have felt he gave it all up for nothing. 4y
wanderinglynn @OnlyYoo One of my faves too. 🙌🏻👍🏻 Feel free to contribute to the discussion. 😀 4y
Addison_Reads I agree with everyone that George asking for help was hard for him to do because he was so often the one solving problems. I also think that things had just gotten to him and he felt helpless and like even if he asked for help there wasn't anything that could be done. Kinda like how a person sometimes has a little pity party before pulling themselves together and trying to find a solution. 4y
wanderinglynn Q2: If George Bailey had traveled the world and gone to Fiji, do you think he would've actually enjoyed his life more? Would it have been even more wonderful? Why or why not?
4y
MsRadioSilence I mean, it seems to me that he‘s already had a pretty wonderful life. However, speaking from personal traveling experience, there‘s a certain feeling of wonder you get going to places that are so very different from your country. I think he would‘ve liked his life a little more but again, he already had a good life. 4y
wanderinglynn @i-am-papercrane Good point. And it is hard to play the “what if” game. My guess is he‘d still have a wonderful life, but a different way. As someone who‘s traveled and moved a lot, I can say that there‘s something to be said for staying in one place and being such an integral part of a community. 4y
Addison_Reads Traveling always gives insight and understanding I feel because you remove yourself from your typical routine and see a different view on the world. I'm not sure this would have made his life more wonderful, just different like, @wanderinglynn said. 4y
EliNeedsMoreShelves @wanderinglynn We watched the movie on Christmas Eve. 4y
EliNeedsMoreShelves Q1 - I think George doesn't ask for help because he feels like he is trapped in the role of helper. He saved the pharmacist from poisoning his patient; he saved his brother from drowning; he saved his family business. He feels like he can't ASK for help because his job is to GIVE help. 4y
EliNeedsMoreShelves Q2 - I think his life probably would have been happy, but not in the same ways, and would have been unhappy in different ways. 4y
wanderinglynn @EliNeedsMoreShelves good points. 👍🏻 4y
wanderinglynn @i-am-papercrane @Addison_Reads @Ads0123 @ChasingOm @EliNeedsMoreShelves @Teebe @Samanthagutt @Chaoticgoodhufflepuff @Readage @Chrissyreadit @LouBeth @Kdgordon88 @MaleficentBookDragon
Q3 coming up in about 30 minutes. ***Feel free to chime in on any question at any time.*** 5pts per comment. Please keep track!
4y
ChasingOm Q2 - I agree with @EliNeedsMoreShelves. I think the whole point of the movie is finding the happiness we have because it‘s the only one we get. Circumstances vary, but they vary in good and bad ways. 4y
wanderinglynn Q3: George‘s antagonist, Mr. Potter, was a miserly, bitter old man who seemed to live only for himself. What do you think made him this way? What was missing from his life? 4y
Chrissyreadit Getting ready to watch in few minutes! 4y
wanderinglynn Don‘t forget our discussion! I have 3 questions up. But feel free to ask your own. (And keep track—5 pts per comment). @i-am-papercrane @Addison_Reads @Ads0123 @ChasingOm @EliNeedsMoreShelves @Teebe @Samanthagutt @Chaoticgoodhufflepuff @Readage @Chrissyreadit @LouBeth @Kdgordon88 @MaleficentBookDragon 4y
wanderinglynn Or comment on your favorite quote or scene. 4y
Chrissyreadit So I just finished watching it with my teens. Who were appalled I had them watch a black and white movie. My daughter was also horrified when the brother slapped the maids butt. My son is horrified by drunk driving. They are very disappointed in my parenting. My niece could not understand the kissing and comments about sex - she thought it was noisy and aggressive.😂🤣😂😆welcome to my world. 4y
Chrissyreadit I think mr Potter was sexually frustrated. And what happened to the money he stole??? He definitely could have afforded a companion- even Hef had 3. 4y
Chrissyreadit I think if George had traveled he would have had fun, and possibly returned at age 30 ready to settle down. Or run a business in Fiji. 4y
Chrissyreadit I do not think he even thought to ask for help. He was probably so used to helping he did not consider it could be reciprocated. 4y
Chrissyreadit For the record: I still cried my eyes out at the end, and I consider Die Hard to be my favorite Christmas movie. 4y
ChasingOm I‘m with @Chrissyreadit on Die Hard! And I think Mr. Potter was sad and bitter BECAUSE he only thought of himself, so he never had the pleasure that comes from knowing someone else has your back. 4y
EliNeedsMoreShelves Q3 - I think Mr Potter was bitter because he chose to make his life about money at the expense of people. (Contrast to George, whose life was about people.) 4y
EliNeedsMoreShelves @Chrissyreadit I mean, the teens aren't wrong - there is definitely some problematic content! 4y
wanderinglynn @Chrissyreadit 😂😂😂 the horror you put your kids through. What do they normally watch if they thought this movie was “aggressive”? 4y
wanderinglynn @Chrissyreadit @ChasingOm DIE HARD! 🙌🏻❤️🎄💚 4y
Chrissyreadit @wanderinglynn ha! They watch everything- I do not limit them- but today‘s shows are def more supportive of women and people of color. Also we are not fun to watch movies with - we all like to pick them apart. 4y
wanderinglynn @Chrissyreadit Yes, different era for sure. 4y
bibliobliss About halfway through the movie; watching the colorized version for the first time all the way through. I'll try to finish tomorrow night 😁 4y
bibliobliss Q1: I think this is a deeply psychological movie. The idea of asking for help in any capacity seems to almost traumatize some people, to the point where they fail to live their best lives (and help others in the process). People like George Bailey have a specific role to fill and at no point does it seem remotely possible to surrender to the need to ask for help. 4y
samantharoberts Q1 - I agree with @EliNeedsMoreShelves he feels like he is everyone‘s helper, and that everyone needs to rely on him. When he needed help, he didn‘t think that he could even ask for help himself. Little did he know, he impacted so many people throughout his life that they were all willing to help him. This is one of my favorite movies it makes me cry every time! I even named my dog after him! 😂 4y
samantharoberts Q2 - I think it‘s hard to say whether he would enjoy his life more. BUT I don‘t think he would have been married and had the family he does now if he traveled the world. The good thing is it‘s never too late to travel! It was almost a blessing in disguise because now the timing is right that he got a wonderful family and can still take that trip someday! 4y
samantharoberts Q3 - I totally agree with @ChasingOm the protagonist and antagonist had completely opposite traits in that George was selfless while Potter was selfish. This turned him sour and bitter against the world. Selfish people have a way of thinking it‘s “them against the world” because they‘re constantly only thinking of themselves 4y
wanderinglynn @Readage I didn‘t know it was colorized. I‘ve only ever watched the B&W version. 4y
wanderinglynn @i-am-papercrane @Addison_Reads @Ads0123 @ChasingOm @EliNeedsMoreShelves @Teebe @Samanthagutt @Chaoticgoodhufflepuff @Readage @Chrissyreadit @LouBeth @Kdgordon88 @MaleficentBookDragon
Q4: Would the ending have been more satisfying if Potter got his comeuppance? Why do you think it was written as it was?
4y
Chrissyreadit Yes!!! I wish Potter was discovered with the money!!! 4y
EliNeedsMoreShelves Q4 - It may have been more satisfying, but I don't think it was really the point of the story. This was, ultimately, George's story, so the money culprit wasn't that important -George's transformation was the real arc of the story. 4y
BookmarkTavern Yes! I needed some justice done! I needed to know that he didn‘t get away with it, and that he wasn‘t going to be able to do that again! But as I‘ve gotten older, I agree more with @EliNeedsMoreShelves . Mr Potter was an inciting incident in George‘s story, but that‘s it. He‘s peripheral and ultimately not important to George‘s arc. (edited) 4y
BookmarkTavern I confess that I have a vindictive streak in me. So, to be entirely honest, I do occasionally daydream that someone ACME style dropped a piano on Mr Potter. (edited) 4y
EliNeedsMoreShelves @chaoticgoodhufflepuff maybe in an epilogue? We could see Harry get married & maybe Mr Potter gets squashed in the final credits scene? 4y
BookmarkTavern @EliNeedsMoreShelves A special feature on the DVD! 👍🏻👍🏻 4y
wanderinglynn @chaoticgoodhufflepuff 😂😂😂 An ACME ending would be epic! 4y
BookmarkTavern A little off tone from the rest of the movie, but then we could see some poor abused underling of Potter‘s rise up and assume control of the bank, making it an honest and productive asset to the community! (edited) 4y
BookmarkTavern An underling that was only able to get a loan for his house from Bailey‘s Building and Loan! (edited) 4y
samantharoberts Q4 - I agree with @EliNeedsMoreShelves and @chaoticgoodhufflepuff . Potter was just an obstacle for George to overcome, he provided the antagonism necessary for the story to take place. Also, I‘m glad it shows that we can live happy lives despite the fact that there‘s evilness and meanness in this world (even if it doesn‘t seem like justice is always served). 4y
ads0123 I agree with @EliNeedsMoreShelves as well about it not being about Potter, but I fully support the ACME after credits scene!! 😂 4y
ads0123 @wanderinglynn I watched the colorized version that‘s available on Amazon Prime. I‘d only ever seen the black and white before that. 4y
BookmarkTavern I like the point @samanthagutt made. There will always be Mr Potters in the world. To let those who are like that take away living with joy and kindness is to allow them a final victory. It‘s important for us to be the Georges and every member of that community that came together that we want to see in the world. The best revenge is to live well, after all. (edited) 4y
wanderinglynn Q5: what is your favorite scene, character, or quote? 4y
EliNeedsMoreShelves Q5 - I love the scene where George & Mary dance themselves into the swimming pool. I love, "What do you want Mary? Do you want the moon? I'll throw a lasso around the moon and drag it down..." 4y
EliNeedsMoreShelves Q5, cont - and I tear up EVERY TIME at the end when Harry says, "A toast to my big brother George. The richest man in town." 4y
Addison_Reads @EliNeedsMoreShelves That is one of my favorite lines on the movie and I think it represents the meaning of the whole show very well. As a kid I always thought this movie was boring when my parents would watch it, but as I grew up I came to appreciate it more and more. Now it's a favorite. 💚 4y
Addison_Reads Love the comments on the ACME ending. 😂 I'd buy that special edition. 4y
Addison_Reads Q3. I'm not sure I can add anything new to this question. You guys have all made great points. We all have Mr. Potter's in our lives, but what this movie teaches us is that we can decide how we choose to respond to them. And when all else fails, there's always the piano ending. 😉 4y
Addison_Reads Another of my favorite lines, "Strange, isn't it? Each man's life touches so many other lives. When he isn't around he leaves an awful hole, doesn't he?" 4y
Addison_Reads Q5. George is my favorite main character in the film, but the neighbor sitting on his porch who yells at George to kiss her already instead of talking her to death has always amused me. 4y
Addison_Reads Has anyone every read the story the movie was based on? Until last year I didn't even know it existed. 4y
Addison_Reads And follow-up, if you have read the story, are there any major differences between the story and the movie? 4y
wanderinglynn @Addison_Reads I have not read the short story. Like you, I only recently learned it was based on a short story. 4y
bibliobliss @wanderinglynn I found a colorized version on YouTube a few years ago 4y
bibliobliss Finished the movie this afternoon 4y
Addison_Reads For those who have watched the colorized version and the black and white, which do you prefer? I'm partial to the black and white myself. I feel the same way about Miracle on 34th street. 4y
wanderinglynn I haven‘t seen the colorized version of this movie. But I have seen other B&W movies colorized. While I like seeing the color of the costumes, I prefer the original B&W versions. 4y
wanderinglynn There‘s still time to comment team! 25 pts for watching the movie + 5pts per comment here. Keep track and let me know. @i-am-papercrane @Addison_Reads @Ads0123 @ChasingOm @EliNeedsMoreShelves @Teebe @Samanthagutt @Chaoticgoodhufflepuff @Readage @Chrissyreadit @LouBeth @Kdgordon88 @MaleficentBookDragon
4y
EliNeedsMoreShelves @Addison_Reads I haven't seen the colorized version either. I should some year, just to see how they compare. 4y
ads0123 I think I‘m partial to the black and white because that‘s the way I first saw it, but the colorized version was cool, too. Seeing the colors of everything was nice. 4y
Chrissyreadit I saw the play- a few weeks ago. There were some differences. @Addison_Reads 4y
wanderinglynn @Chrissyreadit I would love to see a stage production of it. 👍🏻 4y
Addison_Reads @Chrissyreadit I'm jealous. A stage production would be awesome to see. Did you like the stage version or the movie version better? 4y
Chrissyreadit @Addison_Reads I like the movie better. It was a local community production, and the guy who played the judge is a jerk in real life.... 4y
Addison_Reads Is it a Holiday tradition for anyone else to watch this every year? 4y
Addison_Reads @EliNeedsMoreShelves and for any other people who watch this every year, have you watched it since you were a kid? I'm just curious if others grew up watching it thought it was boring as a kid, like I did, but now really appreciate it and enjoy it more. 4y
Addison_Reads And a kinda off the wall question, but if a remake was ever made of this movie, what actor would you love to see play George? Side note, I don't think a remake should be made of this, but I thought it might be a fun question. 4y
wanderinglynn @Addison_Reads yes, I grew up watching it. But I didn‘t think it was boring. But it‘s never been my favorite either. 4y
wanderinglynn @Addison_Reads for a remake, Benedict Cumberbatch because he‘s awesome in anything. 4y
Addison_Reads @wanderinglynn Great choice! I might have to rethink my thoughts on a remake if he plays George. And if it was set outside of the US that would be interesting too. 4y
EliNeedsMoreShelves @Addison_Reads I don't recall watching it as a kid, but I think I probably would have found it a bit boring. 4y
Addison_Reads I was reading through some other posts and discussions and I saw an interesting thought. Has anyone else ever thought of Mr. Potter as a Scrooge like character? I never really did because Potter is still unlikable to me even at the end of the movie. 4y
wanderinglynn @Addison_Reads he is a Scrooge. It‘s just not his movie so no redemption for him. 4y
Chrissyreadit Yes- he is a Scrooge without redemption. I‘m heading into dangerous territory here- but that movie and a Christmas Carol represent the same crazy we have today with villainizing poor and marginal and giving breaks to the obscenely wealthy- Amazon and big banks and power companies- and we are filled with monopolies in sheep‘s clothing instead of mom and pop competitive local business. Even as these movies remain popular.... 4y
wanderinglynn @Chrissyreadit yes, as a society, we really haven‘t evolved much. We face many of the same issues faced 100 years ago. 4y
bibliobliss Q2: I don't think travel would have added to George Bailey's life in a huge way; I think he learned the greatest lesson by staying close to his hometown and family. 4y
bibliobliss Q3: The things that were missing from Mr. Potter's life were the very things that George Bailey had in his. It just took him hitting rock bottom before he could actually see them. That's often how it goes for people. 4y
bibliobliss @Chrissyreadit 🤪 it's funny how times have changed 4y
bibliobliss Q4: I think perhaps the ending would have been more satisfying had Mr. Potter got what he deserved, but it was probably written the way it was because it reflects the reality of life. The bad people don't always get caught or punished; the good guys don't always finish first; every cliché you can imagine about life that happens to be true. The truly important part was that George Bailey found his redemption, regardless of the actions of others. 4y
bibliobliss @Chrissyreadit Me too. Alas, our hero got his redemption in spite of Mr. Potter's greed and deceit. 4y
bibliobliss @EliNeedsMoreShelves You are so right. It didn't matter what others did or didn't do, so long as George Bailey found his way out of the darkness. 4y
bibliobliss @Addison_Reads Not until this year for me. First time!! 4y
bibliobliss @chaoticgoodhufflepuff Yes indeed -- The best revenge is a life well lived!! 4y
wanderinglynn @Readage good point that the bad guy doesn‘t always get caught. 4y
bibliobliss Q5: My favorite scene is kind of cliché but it's the ending where George Bailey is standing next to his wife and holding his daughter in front of the Christmas tree. It's the perfect portrait of his story. He had everything and everyone he needed from the very beginning ? 4y
bibliobliss @EliNeedsMoreShelves That dancing scene was wild 4y
bibliobliss @Addison_Reads 👍 I like that line as well 4y
bibliobliss I think my favorite character is Clarence the Angel who comes down from Heaven to save George from jumping off the bridge. He is just the cutest 😊 (edited) 4y
bibliobliss @Addison_Reads I have not, but now I'd like to!! 4y
bibliobliss @Addison_Reads I have only watched the colorized version but at some point I'll try the black and white 4y
bibliobliss @wanderinglynn I could see him making a good George Bailey. Side note: did you know he does the voice of The Grinch 💚 in the most recent animated version? I absolutely love it 4y
bibliobliss I never watched as a child, but yes, I would have found it very boring. It does drag a bit in places, I think 4y
bibliobliss @Addison_Reads I very much compared Mr. Potter to Scrooge -- without the redemption at the end. My mind was very much on Ebenezer this year, as I finally got around to A Christmas Carol 4y
wanderinglynn @Readage I did know that! And I really like that version too. He‘s also the voice of the devil in amazon Prime adaptation of Good Omens. Like Meryl Streep, I say Benedict can do anything and be awesome. 😉😍 4y
bibliobliss @wanderinglynn 👍😁 Thanks for letting me know, I need to investigate his work. Is he on a show called Dr. Strange?? 4y
wanderinglynn @Readage Yes, he plays Dr. Stephen Strange in the marvel comic movies (first one is called Doctor Strange, then he‘s also part of the larger-marvel world Avengers movies). 4y
wanderinglynn @Readage if you like Sci-fi, he also plays Khan in the Star Trek Into Darkness, one of the newer ST reboot movies, and of course, I absolutely adore him as Sherlock in the BBC modern reboot. (edited) 4y

Well this is happening because every family member, friend and acquaintance that I have who are in possession of my phone number either called or texted me to tell me that it is on television tonight. They know what‘s up and how I love this movie. I can watch it every night of the holiday season and never tire of it. It‘s so touching, reaffirming & good feeling that you can‘t help but smile at the end and run around looking for bells to ring!🛎🔔

🎄 Pecan crisps. They're crispy all the way through and not super sweet.
🎄 I do both equally with a slight preference for hosting during the Christmas holidays because that means we are with my family and I can relax in my own home.
🎄 29 so far which means I'll meet and likely exceed my goal of 30.
🎄 Home Alone. I'm an 70s/80s kid. But really, It's a Wonderful Life.
🎄 A night away with hubby once it's all over.

DebbieGrillo @Cinfhen and @TrishB We're spending Dec 26 - Jan 7 in NJ with his family. That's an 11 hour road trip. On the way home we'll stop for a night in Portland, ME which is beautiful year round. We'll go to an outlet store or two, to LL Bean, for drinks and dinner in a cozy resturant. It's a soft way to finish with all the holiday excitement. 6y
