The Sewing Circle
The Sewing Circle: Hollywood's Greatest SecretFemale Stars Who Loved Other Women | Axel Madsen
3 posts | 1 read | 7 to read
Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, and Barbara Stanwyckto name a fewmaintained their images as glamorous big-screen sex symbols complete with dashing escorts, handsome husbands, and scores of male admirers, thanks to studio publicity departments. But off the set, all three box office divas were involved in lavender marriages (marriages of convenience, often to gay men) or remained stoically single. They, and several other Hollywood starlets of the era, were members of a discreet womens club called the Sewing Circle, Hollywoods underground lesbian society. Madsen takes a candid look at the very complicated dual lives these great stars led and the impact their preference for same-sex relationships had on their movie careers.

According to this book many actresses in old Hollywood could say #ikissedagirl. I have not read this book yet. It could be crap. (Hmmm...now where did I put this book? I'll have to go looking for it.)

Cinfhen It sounds juicy 💋😁 1y
RestlessFickleBookHoarder @Cinfhen I'm kind of a sucker for old Hollywood gossip. 1y
vkois88 I feel like it's an understood thing in Hollywood (old & new) that you'll hook up with anyone... in those days it was more of an issue bc it wasn't acceptable, but I think it's always been the same. Sounds like a good book though 1y
BarbaraBB Sounds good! 1y
RestlessFickleBookHoarder @vkois88 I agree. I think it was much harder for the actors back then. 1y

Mehso-so

Oh man, I finally finished this book. So-so because it introduced a ton of new actresses to me to further research, but it was also basically just a giant information dump. I've also heard issues some people have had with the author's allegedly less than stellar source citing, I guess? So take this all with some salt if you read it. Great intro to golden age actresses if you don't know anything, tho.
