Every Body Yoga: Let Go of Fear. Get on the Mat. Love Your Body.
Every Body Yoga: Let Go of Fear. Get on the Mat. Love Your Body. | Jessamyn Stanley
From the unforgettable teacher Jessamyn Stanley comes Every Body Yoga, a book that breaks all the stereotypes. It s a book of inspiration for beginners of all shapes and sizes: If Jessamyn could transcend these emotional and physical barriers, so can we. It s a book for readers already doing yoga, looking to refresh their practice or find new ways to stay motivated. It s a how-to book: Here are easy-to-follow directions to 50 basic yoga poses and 10 sequences to practice at home, all photographed in full color. It s a book that challenges the larger issues of body acceptance and the meaning of beauty. Most of all, it s a book that changes the paradigm, showing us that yoga isn t about how one looks, but how one feels, with yoga sequences like I Want to Energize My Spirit, I Need to Release Fear, I Want to Love Myself. Jessamyn Stanley, a yogi who breaks all the stereotypes, has built a life as an internationally recognized yoga teacher and award-winning Instagram star by combining a deep understanding for yoga with a willingness to share her personal struggles in a way that touches everyone who comes to know her. Now she brings her body-positive, emotionally uplifting approach to yoga in a book that will help every reader discover the power of yoga and how to weave it seamlessly into his or her life. "

[I needed this, especially that 2nd paragraph. I was a daily practitioner for ~1yr, then Little Dude arrived 8wks early & life went sideways. I really want to get back to my practice now that he‘s older. This is more than just a book about yoga poses. Jessamyn digs deep to break down the stereotypes about yoga commonly found in Western society. She addresses appropriation, body shaming, and coming to the mat no matter your body shape, color or size. It‘s a truly inspirational read.

This is one of the best parts about developing a home yoga practice! After 1 1/2 years of studio classes, I have only recently started to feel more comfortable with doing more at home...and it is so freeing! I also find that I experiment a lot more than I ever did in a class when surrounded by more experienced practitioners...which is leading to more growth.

Qpri Great to hear! May I ask what style you are practicing? 4mo
4thhouseontheleft @Qpri I actually practice a mix, and I go beyond just asanas to all of the 8 limbs of yoga. But primarily I practice Vinyasa/Ashtanga Vinyasa, Yin and restorative. I would like to learn more about Kundalini this year. 4mo

✨✨Self-care day! ✨✨

It‘s been an intense couple of weeks, and I‘m giving myself a hump day off! I plan on practicing some 🧘‍♀️ poses I would like to improve (looking at you Warrior III, Half 🌙 and Crow!), doing the 45 min Black History Peloton 🚴🏻‍♀️ class, reading ⬆️ book while listening to This Is Me, and catching up on Big Little Lies - figured I should finish Season 1 before 2 is released!

What are you doing on #humpday?

Redwritinghood Getting ready for yoga class right now. 4mo
jb72 I cannot seem to get motivated with all of this rain. It started last night and is still coming down this morning. 4mo
4thhouseontheleft @Redwritinghood That‘s awesome! What type of yoga do you practice? I‘m loving this book, esp how she focuses on the 8 limbs of yoga rather than only the asanas. I‘ve moved away from the studio into more of a home practice, since that‘s what is working for me right now. @jb72 It‘s been raining most of this week here, too. Rainy days = reading days! Well, in theory at least. 😂 4mo
Redwritinghood @4thhouseontheleft It‘s primarily a vinyasa yoga, if I had to label it. It‘s very athletic (lots of planks, high lunge, chair poses, etc), but also breath and meditation. Class is 1.5 hr. Just got back and I‘m beat. 4mo
4thhouseontheleft @Redwritinghood I love the longer classes. I do a mix of flow, restorative and stretch, depending on what I need on any given day. 4mo

I‘ve been doing yoga for a very long time but I found this gem to be wonderful. I think that Jessamyn‘s approach to yoga is laid back and her descriptions and photos of the poses are great! Even though yoga classes are with other humans (and animals) yoga itself is very personal and I like the way that Jessamyn reiterates to just do your own thing. Think about your own breath, your own poses, your own flow. 🧘🏽‍♀️💚 #yogalove

I did a Yoga Mala for the first time today. It is a moving meditation to take stock of your life and set new goals in conjunction with the changing season. It consists of 108 sun salutations...108 downward dogs, 108 planks, 108 forward folds, etc. I did it with a group of 12 women, followed by a 🔥 bowl ceremony to burn what we are letting go, and setting our intention for the New Year. It was so powerful! I also think I have earned this tea time!

Part memoir and part guide book on yoga, I loved how with each shared memory she provided a practice that matched her needs. This book caught my eye and drew me in from the beginning because I loved Jessamyn‘s attitude and outlook. I decided to read the whole thing instead of just paging through for yoga class ideas. However, this book lost me with all her feelings/life stories, details about mistakes that made her grow, struggles with body image/weight loss, and battle with self-esteem. I feel like it just wasn‘t for me and it was kind of a downer.

Jessmyn Stanley has written a guide to yoga practice, theory, technique and attitude, all in one. You may not actually be able to "do" yoga after reading this book (I think you need to watch video's or attend class to really get the moves), but you will certainly be in the right frame of mind and feel like you can accomplish anything if you try it. All of your potential questions will be answered.

[DELETED] 3803335244 I love covers like this! My oldest daughter is 14 & I‘m always saying body types are all different & beautiful. It‘s nice to see when media, books, & tv represent that. AceOnRoam In terms of body image, this book is absolutely fantastic, but I have to warn you that she swears A LOT @ForeverNerdy dropping the F bomb regularly and even m*f at one stage. She is funny but I thought she could have cut back a bit on the swearing. I got mine on ebook from the library. 1y

As I really enjoy yoga, I selected this for the Body Positive prompt for #booked2018 . It was a good read! I don't know that it will improve my practice - I had trouble following the photos & descriptions (I need in person visual to get the gist.) But the message of self-acceptance will resonate with me on and off the mat. Jessamyn's experiences learning to accept herself & her body were heartbreaking and inspirational.
Note - a lot of profanity

Yoga for full figures. These books have many of the same basic positions. It's a good refresher. Stanley lets you have a more in depth look at her life. I like how the DK exercise books are laid out more. They show you more of the steps.

mcipher Very cool! I love yoga but it can be tough sometimes when you're a larger person. 2y
Seekingtardis I don't think my full figure bends that way! 2y

Pickpick

The body positivity, inclusivity and general positive attitude of this book makes it a total win for me. I've done yoga on and off for 20 years so the poses weren't new to me, but if anyone is a yoga novice, I would totally recommend starting with this book. 💖🤸‍♂️😊

Argos wants to practice! Mostly just his version of child's pose. 😄
