2 posts | 7 to read
"Maidenhair" is composed of three main storylines: an interpreter listening to the stories of refugees, the letters he sends to his son, and the diaries of a Russian opera singer in the early 1900s. An instant classic of Russian literature, it was a finalist for the Best Translated Book Award.

I can't even express how much I admire Mikhail Shishkin's work. It has everything I love. A bold postmodern structure, characters wrestling with morality and love and loss. He's utterly uncompromising and he makes you work so hard while reading but it is totally worth it #dropeverythingandread #aprilbookshowers

andrew61 I've just reserved 'The light and the dark' from the library as it is the onky one of his books they have in stock. It looks intriguing. Thanks for the recommend. 7y
Moray_Reads @andrew61 I hope you enjoy it. It's up there with the best books I've ever read. Not that I want to oversell it! 😳 7y

I've taken a ridiculously broad view of what counts as #setineasterneurope - there are so many definitions. Many are set before the fall of the USSR. I have Russia, Ukraine, Latvia, Estonia, Hungary, Czechoslovskia and Poland though some of these can (should?) also be classed as Central Europe, Northern Europe, the Balkans etc. I have lots more but only so much room in the picture!

saresmoore Wow! I applaud your specificity! Geography is my greatest academic weakness, so I am particularly impressed. 7y
tpixie Wow! You have lots of them! 7y
Moray_Reads @saresmoore I spent a lot of secondary school and university studying USSR and post-USSR history 😊 7y
