The Tequila Worm
The Tequila Worm | Viola Canales
4 posts | 2 read | 9 to read
Sofia comes from a family of storytellers. Here are her tales of growing up in the barrio in McAllen, Texas, full of the magic and mystery of family traditions: making Easter cascarones, celebrating el Dia de los Muertos, preparing for quinceaera, rejoicing in the Christmas nacimiento, and curing homesickness by eating the tequila worm. When Sofia is singled out to receive a scholarship to boarding school, she longs to explore life beyond the barrio, even though it means leaving her family to navigate a strange world of rich, privileged kids. Its a different mundo, but one where Sofias traditions take on new meaning and illuminate her path. From the Hardcover edition.

OK, so I can't find two of my July #roll100 hits---a genre-blending Verso Books London Jenny Hval volume, and a guide through the economic depression of the 1990s by an analyst from India---so, here's some other progressive economics I either need to get to finish (one of them just ordered from 7Stories Press); and my third hit, #75, a middle-grade by a Latina author. And some library loans.

Pickpick

My second pick for #HispanicHeritageMonth

Sofia is Mexican American and has to find a way to live in what seems like different worlds—managing to fit in at a boarding school where individualism is favorited and staying true to herself and her roots where collectivism is what she‘s always been taught. In the process she learns to love her heritage.

Viola Canales describes the experience of straddling the line between two cultures very well.

For the third day of the #AllHallowsRead #photoadaychallenge --a book featuring the day of the dead. I've intended to read for quite a while! @Litsy
