Newest audiobook!

Only about 25% after my run this afternoon and I‘m already more engaged than I was with the Gunslinger. I think this is going to be a better one for sure!

Kaila-ann I love this series ❤️! 9h
jb72 Great series. I‘m on book 4. 8h

My air-carriage has arrived (2.5 hours late). Or sky-carriage, depending on the page.

After a horrendous week, now my flight is delayed. I don't usually drink before flying, because I hate using the bathroom in a plane, but I need it tonight. It took me a while to get into this book, but now I'm actually liking it better than Dark Tower I. Hopefully JetBlue is able to get me to Minnesota eventually...

I love Stephen King because of his intricate detail and imagination.

Skipped yesterday‘s #riotgrams due to lack of dogs. Here are a few selections for #disabilityinbooks

I really should read more books that feature disability though.

Finished the tagged book this morning while playing a ton of #WizardsUnite at a nearby park. SO MANY inns and greenhouses! It‘s a little hard to multitask, though. I started another book this morning and really need to pay attention instead of cast spells...

Starting my journey into the Dark Tower universe. Unto book two, The Drawing of the Three. Very interesting so far, Roland is a funny character.

post image

Book 2 of my Dark Tower re-read is complete. This book picks up just a few hours after the end of The Gunslinger, with the "lobstrosities" pictured above (image from Google, I love it!). The opening scene is pretty terrifying and the book takes off from there. I love watching Roland build his ka-tet and those first scenes with Eddie are just too good! 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Four unread sequels to some of my favourite books and I've been putting them off for so long, possibly to savour them, maybe because I'm scared to finish them as I might lack the exciting of having them ready.

Hands up - who else does this??

gibblr At least in the case of Crooked Kingdom and Muse, you should do it!! I read both not too long ago. Put off Muse for awhile but finally but the bullet. 4mo
Jinster @gibblr 👍 Tempted to do SK first as there are so many more to look forward to. Then keep the massive Follett story for summer. 4mo
julesG Yep same! Crooked Kingdom and I haven't even read Strange the Dreamer. Stupid as hell. And my kids are the same. 🙈😁 4mo

Next stop on the Dark Tower re-read with @TheNextBook !

post image

So I was almost finished my book last night when I turned the light out like a responsible adult at 11pm in anticipation of a busy day at work today... then proceeded to lay in bed awake for 2 hours thinking about my busy day of work ahead 🤦🏻‍♂️

madamereadsalot1 That is precisely why I have to read or listen to an audiobook until I pass out. Otherwise my brain does what it wants, which is anything but rest. Hope your day went well! 6mo

Welp I caught that bug everyone else has! 😞🤧 So, I‘ve been able to catch up on some reading! Although this week is Thanksgiving and my best friend‘s baby is suppose to be here tomorrow! I need to get healthy fast! 😱

I haven‘t read this series in years and I forgot how much I enjoyed the second book! Excited to get onto the third!

post image

Given my dislike of the first book, I wasn't all that excited about The Drawing of the Three being the next in line to read. However, I got over it quickly. This book is absolutely incredible. All of the characters, the jumps between worlds, every single thing about it is just absolutely wonderful. As much as I loathed book one, I am so excited to read the rest of the series now. This book easily gets five out of five stars.

post image

#readingresolutions #dnfbooks I tried, but I ended up DNFing this book. I think I waited too long between reading it, so I may give it another chance someday, but for now, it‘s a DNF.

9-2-18: 36th finished book of 2018! I liked this one much more than the first book. I‘m glad I decided to continue. And, as usual, Mr. King threw in a few curveballs I didn‘t see coming. I love that about his writing. 📖👍🏼#️⃣3️⃣6️⃣

I reviewed this on my blog earlier, i liked it a lot but had a lot of issues with racial slurs used in the book.

Full review on my blog: https://deannareadsbooks.blogspot.com/2018/08/audiobook-review-drawing-of-three-...

The plot is just to introduce new characters. The pacing is pretty slow until one of the doors open. Roland's cold resolve is cracking under the physical pain he's in, it adds alot to the plot. The new characters and their home settings are dynamic and vivid. Topics like race and addiction are handled pretty well (not alot of nuance in the race discussion). The end is eh. If you want to read the series, this is a bump in the road. 6/10

Much more happens in this book than the first, and King brings in compelling characters along with interesting world jumping. He's a fantastic writer, even though his blunt descriptions of some of the horrors of the primary world are a little too masterful for me. #epickatetread

Book II of the Dark Tower was when I realized this series was going to be something special. It was fast-paced, intense and totally unique. And in true King fashion, it's the characters that keeps you coming back. Who isn't at least half in love with Roland, Eddie or Susannah by now? ❤️❤️❤️

MinDea What did everyone think of this book? Did you enjoy it? Do you have a favorite character or scene that happened in this book? 14mo
MinDea Are you excited to start the third one in August? 14mo
Andrew65 Loved the whole section with Eddie Dean, the bit on the plane was full of tension. Can‘t wait to spend more time with Eddie. 14mo
See All 30 Comments
EadieB @MinDea I think the best scene is when Mort got cut in half by the train. 14mo
BookwormAHN I really enjoyed this one. I think Eddie is becoming one of my favorite characters. 14mo
TrishB I felt like the story really started to take off in this one. I loved the jumping between the two worlds. 14mo
Andrew65 @BookwormAHN Totally agree. 14mo
AmberWB This was definitely one of my favorites, although it did stress me out. 😊 14mo
BookwormM I really like Eddie not so sure about Detta/Odetta but I do like the way that these misfit characters have a unique and special destiny 14mo
TK421 I loved the Eddie section. That was one of the best gunfight scenes that I have ever read. 14mo
TK421 @EadieB I have to agree with you. Mort was awful. He tied a bit of the story together, but I was happy to see him go. After reading about Eddie, I expected The Pusher to be about drugs. 14mo
EadieB @TK421 I hated what Mort did to Jake and Susannah. 14mo
MinDea Mort totally deserved what he got. I loved how they all sort of tied together in their old "when" worlds. I hope Susannah grows on your guys! ? @EadieB @TK421 @BookwormM @AmberWB @Andrew65 @TrishB @BookwormAHN Eddie is a great character too! It is so hard for me to pick a favorite one. They all are so good and grow I to such amazing characters! ? 14mo
TrishB Without giving too much away, I love Susannah 💕 14mo
Andrew65 @BookwormM I also wasn‘t sure about Detta / Odetta, and as a result didn‘t enjoy that section as much. 14mo
Andrew65 @MinDea I am looking forward to reading the next book, and already have it downloaded. 14mo
Jovy I agree with everybody on Eddie‘s section! What struck me on this re-read was the almost insta-luv between Eddie and Odetta. Completely forgot that it unfolded like that. I also loved Roland in the gun and drug store scenes! Rolex for Keflex! 😂 14mo
MinDea @Jovy I didn't remember it going that way (so quickly) either! It was #ka! 💙 I loved the gun and drug store scenes too! 14mo
MinDea Awesome @Andrew65! I am all ready too! 14mo
MinDea @TrishB 💙 She is so good. I hope everyone else sees that too! 14mo
tonyahoswalt Eddie really grew on me. I look forward to hopefully liking Susannah as we get to know her, because I did not like Detta. Odetta was fine though. I know Mort was awful, but I think his section was my favorite. The connections really stuck out to me, and then yes, I was happy he got what he deserved. @EadieB @TK421 @BookwormM 14mo
MinDea When I was creating the schedule for the next book I was having fun remembering what is to come! I don't remember much of this book so it'll be a great re-read for me! @TrishB @Andrew65 @TK421 @tonyahoswalt @Jovy @EadieB @BookwormAHN @BookwormM @AmberWB 14mo
tonyahoswalt @Jovy I liked Eddie, but his instalove for Odetta was a little much. At least she she thought she could love him, but wasn't certain. 14mo
tonyahoswalt I'm looking forward to the next book 😄 14mo
MinDea @tonyahoswalt Yes his section is a great one and does shape this late a lot! I agree when reading it the second time and remembering how quick Eddie fell in love with Odetta/Detta seemed strange but it's #ka! 14mo
TrishB I‘ve found I remember the headlines- but not do much of the detail! Really enjoying it 😁 14mo
ScientistSam @EadieB @MinDea that was a great scene to be sure! It seems like there's a lot of injustice in this story/world. I also loved how Roland pays for the penicillin with a Rolex. 14mo
ScientistSam @Jovy! Yes, loved the Rolex for keflex and sharpshooting scenes! It amazes me how careful Roland is to avoid shooting Innocents after the whole scene with Jake's death in the last book. 14mo
MinDea @ScientistSam It is such an interesting character of Roland's to pay for the medicine and bullets and also not want Innocents to be hurt. I wonder if there is a sense of pride in the other "whens"? 14mo
trioxin_sematary @TrishB The Drawing of the Three is he real beginning of The Dark Tower story, that's why I always implore people who dislike The Gunslinger to carry on until at least the end of book 2. How are you liking it now? 13mo

Not feeling well today so taking it easy with my snuggle buddy #Shadow.

I remember feeling very different about this book the first time around but I think the fact I have read this series before is making me love these books this time around. I am catching so many things that I had missed that foreshadows the future. They are so well hidden in the story that it is easy to not realize what they are til you know the story.

MinDea How is everyone doing? I know I have seen some have finished the book already but how are the rest of ya'll doing? Are you enjoying it? I will post a more formal discussion but wanted to check in! 1y

MinDea Thanks @Trashcanman! 💙 I hope you enjoy the third book. I honestly don't remember that one so I am looking forward to reading it! 1y
EadieB @MinDea Actually my copy is cassette tapes that I recently found from the first time I read the book and this audio version is read by Stephen King himself. 1y
MinDea 😱😱😱😱 That's awesome!! @EadieB 1y
EadieB @MinDea it‘s rather funny because he isn‘t the best reader. He makes mistakes and stops to repeat what he meant to say and when he runs out of breath you can hear him gasping for more air. I guess that‘s what you have a different reader for the cd‘s. (edited) 1y
MinDea That is so weird and interesting @EadieB! I wonder if he is only on cassette or if they moved his reading to CDs. I will have to look. So cool. 1y
Andrew65 @EadieB @MinDea My version was Frank Muller. 1y
EadieB @Andrew65 @minDea Interesting that there are so many different readers. My cassettes were published in 1987. (edited) 1y
tonyahoswalt I hope you feel better soon! 1y
MinDea Thank you @tonyahoswalt! 💙💙 1y
MinDea @Andrew65 @EadieB I wonder how many there are. 🤔 1y
EadieB @MinDea @Andrew65 I think I can see only 3 narrators. Stephen King on the cassettes then Frank Muller read the first 4 books on CD (Gunslinger, Drawing of the Three, Waste Lands and Wizard and Glass) he died and then George Guidall took over and finished the series and then went back to do the revised Gunslinger book. (edited) 1y
Rudis I brought the book on vacation to read, and I haven‘t yet pulled it out of the suitcase 😅 I need to catch up, I‘m still several sections behind 1y
BookishBelle I hope you feel better!! I‘m just getting started on this one so I know I‘m pretty far behind. I was really skeptical until he went through the door. It has gotten much better since then. The lobster totally freaked me out. 🙃 1y
rohit-sawant Hope you feel better soon! It's been months since I read this one but it's still fresh in mind! 1y

GrilledCheeseSamurai I haven't been able to read this for two weeks cuz I binged on it and go ahead of the schedule. Time has caught up now though so I'm right on track (although I'll prolly just finish it off on my next visit with it). Really enjoying it though. 👍 1y
jfalkens Hope you feel better soon xXxX xXxX 1y
MinDea Thank you @jfalkens! 💙💙 1y
MinDea @GrilledCheeseSamurai read at your own pace! I know in the upcoming books it might either suck you in or you might need a break as they become chunksters! I am glad you are liking it! Are you at The Pusher section then? 1y
GrilledCheeseSamurai Yup. I paused at the Bitter Medicine chapter. I know I could have just finished it off but I'm enjoying the schedule of it all. 🤸‍♂️ 1y
MinDea @GrilledCheeseSamurai I like the pace of reading a chapter a week too. I don't know how that pace will go for the whole series but right now it seems like a good amount each week! 1y
PaperbackPirate I finished it and loved it. I definitely needed the group to keep me going in The Gunslinger but the story carried me through The Drawing of the Three. Are you going to continue the chapter a week with The Waste Lands? 14mo

Jack's final thoughts, and mine, are that this book really picked up in the Pusher chapter. I don't know that the "Final Shuffle" was satisying, and I will need to see more of what Odetta/Detta has become to give an opinion, but I did like the last part of the book. @MinDea @TricksyTails @TK421 @Andrew65

Andrew65 I‘m with you and Jack too! 🐈 1y
WhatThePuck @Andrew65 @tonyahoswalt keep pushing through. Haven't read these in a while, but if memory serves me, this is the slowest book. I will say that Odetta/Detta was always my least favorite character. Mostly bc she's crude and King's choice of dialect for her. 1y

Now finished this for the #EpicKaTetRead and not sure how to respond to this. I did feel the need to read to the end ahead of schedule. Whoops! I loved the story feel of it overall and couldn‘t get enough of the first section of the book but didn‘t enjoy the reading of the second half anywhere near as much even though I loved the overall story. This may sound a contradiction of sorts and for me it was but doesn‘t change this feeling. Onto book 3.

tonyahoswalt I am still on schedule, because I'm trying too read Red Rising quickly. It's an overdue library book. I will let you know how I feel about the next section this weekend though! 1y

EadieB @Andrew65 I used to read Stephen King and a few other authors years ago because I just didn‘t know who to read but since social media I have found so many great authors. I just thought it was so interesting how King intertwined characters from some of his others books throughout this Dark Tower series. You just have to flow with it but seriously, he isn‘t the best writer out there. He is just different and crazy and that‘s what I like about him. 1y
Andrew65 @EadieB That‘s interesting Eadie, thanks. 👍 1y

Is it just me? I was reading this book as part of the #EpicKaTetRead and loving it and particularly the section on the Prisoner and what a great character Eddie Dean is; However not particularly enjoyed the Oddetta and Detta section (Lady of Shadows). If so does it pick up again from that point now I have finished Lady of Shadows. @MinDea @TricksyTails @GarthRanzz It has felt like two different books.

C.Perone I didn't care for her either; but as the series goes on she gets better. Just power through for now 1y
Andrew65 @C.Perone Thanks, Pleased to hear it wasn‘t just me. I‘m onto Reshuffle now. 😊 1y
C.Perone Enjoy!!😊 1y

Andrew65 @C.Perone Thanks 😊 1y
MinDea @Andrew65 I was just talking to @tonyahoswalt and @TK421 about Detta. I would agree with @C.Perone that she gets better as the book goes on and especially throughout the series. Her character now is not the character you will (hopefully) fall in love with later. At least finish the book and see how you feel about her. 💙 1y
MinDea As well as Eddie. He too changes. He is such a great character! 1y
Andrew65 @MinDea Totally agree about Eddie, hopefully Detta will grow on me. It just felt such a change from the Eddie Dean section. Still reading on 👍 1y
tonyahoswalt Indeed, I was just telling @MinDea that I don't like Detta because she is so over the top. I am actually having this discussion with my husband right now, and he says the two get better. We just have to keep reading. 😁 It's been a very mixed experience for me with these books because I feel like I'm going to love the series as a whole, but I'm not necessarily liking the books so far, at least not completely. 1y
Andrew65 @tonyahoswalt I‘d agree with you, my reading experiences of the book are similar to mine. Loving some sections but not enjoying some other sections but enjoying the story overall. Rather like a rollercoaster ride. I have not read these before. @MinDea (edited) 1y
MinDea @tonyahoswalt To be completely honest, when I first read these books I really did not enjoy them. Honestly. The first one is seriously f'ed up. I really didn't like Odetta in the second one. The third one got a little more interesting but it was the 4th one that made me really love what I was reading. The rest are LOOOOOOOOOOOOONG and at time I would set the book aside for weeks or even months before coming back. 1y
MinDea BUT once ai finished the series I was blown away by the face value story and the symbolic deeper meaning of the story. I loved the series as a whole but book to book I was hot and cold. 1y
Andrew65 @MinDea We all seem to be sharing some similar thoughts and experiences! @tonyahoswalt 1y
EadieB @Andrew65 I always find with Stephen King that you have to go with his flow which is not always a smooth ride because his mind is definitely twisted at times. You just have to hope that in the end it will make sense and if it doesn‘t, you just have to say “Oh well, I guess I missed the meaning of that one” I like his very early books and 11/22/63 I would consider my favorite. I gave up on the Dark Tower midway because the rest were not published. (edited) 1y

It has been so long since I read this series. I have forgotten so much it‘s almost like reading it for the first time.

I have a spoiler question (not really s spoiler but whatever I'm being overly cautious) for this week's chapter(s) in the comments...

Also...holy hell I love this book! 🤘

GrilledCheeseSamurai What would you do, if like Odetta, you just suddenly found yourself on that beach like that? I mean seriously. Holy shit. Can you imagine? 1y
TK421 You would have to question reality. I know that I have had some jacked up dreams that sure felt real at the time. 1y
MinDea I didn't get a notification of this post! 😡 I would think I was hallucinating. I wouldn't think it was real! I went crazy or something. @tonyahoswalt @TrishB @TK421 @GrilledCheeseSamurai 14mo
tonyahoswalt Yeah, I'd think I had seriously lost it! 14mo
TrishB Definitely think it was a dream and I‘d read too many SK books!! 14mo

“People like Henry always came back, because people like Henry knew how to use trust. It was the only thing people like Henry did know how to use. First they changed trust into need, then they changed need into a drug, and once that was done, they - what was Eddie‘s word for it? - push. Yes. They pushed it.”

Naughty me I decided to read ahead and have now finished the book. Really enjoyed this edition I love Eddie and I found the sections with Roland in our world most amusing.

As I am currently fighting a bug that feels like flu while on immune suppressors I was totally behind Roland and his visit to the pharmacy while others may have questioned why I was like HELL YEAH!!

MinDea Oh no! Hope you feel better soon! So glad you enjoyed this one! 1y

One of the most important books of the series as Roland joins forces with Eddie Dean and Odetta Holmes (Susannah Dean) to save the dark tower. It is rich in symbol and allegory. This is my 2nd time reading and I did enjoy it more than the Gunslinger. I liked that this book brought Roland to New York. Roland meets a new adversary, Jack Mort. Looking forward to the next book, The Waste Lands.

Bookishthoughts I think this maybe my favorite! I enjoy how King indroduces every one. 1y
EadieB @lazydays Definitely my favorite too! 1y
Trashcanman Jack Mort doesn't feel a thing. 1y

Liz_M I really liked this book. Read it at the beach and drew concerned looks from friends because I kept giggling. 1y
EadieB @Liz_M Very funny! 1y
Andrew65 A bit (lot) behind on this! 1y
EadieB @Andrew65 I think you have til mid-July to finish it. 1y
Andrew65 @EadieB Just entering my busiest period, 400 reports to read and write in the next couple of weeks. 1y
EadieB @Andrew65 I thought you would be finished the term by the end of June. 1y

I‘m reading the Contact and Landing chapter & already like this book more than The Gunslinger.
Thank you for hosting #TheDarkTowerChapterAWeek #EpicKaTetRead @MinDea & @TricksyTails !

LiterRohde I found the same thing. After The Gunslinger, things start to come together and the first book makes more sense. I‘m on 1y
PaperbackPirate @LiterRohde Luckily so many people encouraged me to stick it out! 1y
Frankie_Walnuts Hi, Nicole! How do I get into this Dark Tower reading group? I'm brand new to Litsy - thanks for recommending it :-) 14mo

PaperbackPirate Hi @Frankie_Walnuts ! Welcome! Did you make the jump from LibraryThing? @MinDea is the host. I would follow her to get the schedule. We just finished The Drawing of the Three. 14mo
Frankie_Walnuts @PaperbackPirate- This IS perfect timing then ? I'm ready to begin "The Waste Lands" right now. ???? (edited) 14mo
PaperbackPirate @Frankie_Walnuts I just got my copy of The Waste Lands. The nice thing about reading the series so late is getting to pick which edition to read. I got the illustrated edition with a skull train on the cover! 14mo
Frankie_Walnuts @PaperbackPirate - nice! I did come over from LibraryThing, but I'm planning to do both spots until I have a clear understanding of which one is more user friendly and better for me. 14mo
PaperbackPirate @Frankie_Walnuts I just saw in a comment we‘re starting the week of August 5th. The official post isn‘t up yet but I can tag you when I see it. 14mo
PaperbackPirate @Frankie_Walnuts I like using both for different reasons. I wish they were merged somehow. 14mo
Frankie_Walnuts @PaperbackPirate - thank you! Perhaps I'll go ahead and read "The Godfather" in the meantime. It's on my nightstand staring at me, and I'm returning the stare. 14mo
MinDea Love to have you join @Frankie_Walnuts I added you to the list so you'll be tagged in future posts! 14mo
