pickJust wow. I was absorbed in this from the start an read it in one sitting and had no idea my partner snapped this picture until this morning. I definitely found it to be a powerful and introspective story and recommend (but with a content warning of suicide). Edgar was a great reading buddy. I don't think he moved from his spot until I finished.

Another YA covering tough subject matter.
I'm currently focusing on my physical TBR titles that I will pass on to charity etc after reading....I'm increasingly minimalist in my preferences and really want to reduce my physical books to much loved and a few TBR only.
pickVery fast read! I needed to hear the entire story immediately after I started the book. I haven't watched the series, but will have to after reading this!
I think I need to stop going to B&N. It was fun though and most of the books were $5. My friend and I had fun!

pickThis was an excellent book. It tells a good story and shows how mean middle and high school students can be these days. I think it should be covered in an English class truth be told.
Reading this before I watch the show.. I always read the book before I watch it on film. This is good so far and sad. It also shows how cruel people can be!

bailedTerrible story that glorifies suicide and does lots of damage to mental health awareness regarding the topic.
pickIve already watched the Netflix series for this book so I wondered if I'd enjoy (not the best word but I can't think of an alternative right now) this as much as I did the show but I did. I was equally as invested. Equally transported to my own secondary school days and the traumas girls in particular face.
For me this book summarises everything that happens to teens every single day. We've got to do better.

This is a YA novel following Hannah Baker after her suicide. She leaves behind 13 tapes, each focusing on a person and their actions leading to her decision. Being listened to by a fellow student he learns truths about lies, gossip, rape, and more. A heavy hitter. A must read.
Book Spin Pick: THIRTEEN REASONS WHY by JAY ASHER - Not much of a YA fan, but this book is powerful! Heavy, tough topics, but things that need to addressed and talked about so much more than they are. Haven't been able to put this one down. I was also a fan of the series.

pickBeing a teenager is hard. Most of us forget that.
This book brought out some emotions in me that will stay with me for some time.
so-soMaybe it was just too hyped up for me. The concept was interesting listening to the tapes and the reasons leading up to her need suicide. I liked that the people that she felt contributed to her depression all had to listen to the tapes to see where they contributed to her downward spiral. The main take away from this book was that our actions towards others and ourselves all have consequences and cause reactions in others so be mindful of that.
so-soThis was the books second chance for me. I tried reading it in middle school when it was new, but couldn‘t get into it. I honestly may not have been able to get into it if it hadn‘t been for the Netflix show adding so much more to the story. Fast-paced but left me wanting more.

pickGreat book with a unique premise. I intentionally didn‘t watch the show but now I‘m going to immediately.
Started rereading this via audiobook. Thought it‘d be interesting that way.
pickAfter finally reading this one, I have an even better understanding of why it‘s so polarizing. Quote sums it up. Listening to someone narrate her surrender and then maneuver a few final events to steel herself for her final act is chilling. The use of Clay as the boy listening to the tapes is incredibly effective at placing the reader in each moment. Going to have to come down on the side of better to read this book and talk about it, though.
Starting, I've watched the 1st and 2nd season on Netflix but haven't gotten around to the next season. I have been wanting to read this book for a while though to see how closely the Netflix adaptation stuck to the book or what they left out or changed, please be advised there is a trigger warning for rape, suicide, assault, and bullying.

After all the bullying and harassment, she commited suicide in her bathtub. Before her death, she made tapes to all the people that affected her into committing to her death. Her friend Clay then investigated the situation.

Day 13: 13- so I read this book when it first came out. I had some mixed feelings. I enjoyed the story it explains how suicide is usually just not one trigger and a build up of a lot of pain/frustration/emotion etc. I saw the show and I feel like they get some parts write and others so very wrong.

Through out I was secretly hoping Hannah wasn't dead, she faked her death somehow. But I knew that wasn't going to happen.
I devoured this in high-school; and put it on my then list of top reads, but I haven‘t read it since. I watched season one of the Netflix show when it came out, and was shaken by the rawness of it. I didn‘t hate the show, but did feel strongly for those who may have watched it and found themselves worse off. I‘m curious to see how I‘ll perceive the book now that I‘m older, would say I‘m in a better mental state, and have a child of my own.
so-soProbably one of the few books that are inferior to their screenplays. Personal opinion, the Netflix version pulled out my feelings of sorrow and sadness wayyy more than the book. In the end, 6/10 stars
pickI‘m actually surprised at how low this is rated. Is it the best book ever? No. But it is intriguing and the characters are realistic and blend together into a believable story. No part of me feels like this “glorifies suicide.” If anything, it places an importance on reaching out to your peers for a mental health check. 3.5/5
