Black Panther #1
Black Panther #1 | Ta-Nehisi Coates, Brian Stelfreeze (Illustrator)
A new era for the Black Panther starts here! Written by MacArthur Genius and National Book Award winner TA-NEHISI COATES (Between the World and Me) and illustrated by living legend BRIAN STELFREEZE, "A Nation Under Our Feet" is a story about dramatic upheaval in Wakanda and the Black Panther's struggle to do right by his people as their ruler. The indomitable will of Wakanda -- the famed African nation known for its vast wealth, advanced technology and warrior traditions -- has long been reflected in the will of its monarchs, the Black Panthers. But now the current Black Panther, T'Challa, finds that will tested by a superhuman terrorist group called The People that has sparked a violent uprising among the citizens of Wakanda. T'Challa knows the country must change to survive -- the question is, will the Black Panther survive the change?

Day 12: #heroes #marchintothe70s

"Black Panther is the ancestral ceremonial title of T'Challa, the king of Wakanda. T'Challa splits his time between protecting his kingdom, with the aid of his elite female royal guard, the Dora Milaje, and helping protect the entire world..."

Lizpixie I need to see the movie, everyone says it‘s amazing🖤🙌 5y

I had no knowledge of Black Panther‘s story prior to reading this book. I was very confused through the first two issues over who the players were and their relationships to each other. The volume is mainly background information without a plan going forward. I have Vol. 2 and I think I should read it straight away so as not to forget what I‘ve just learned!

Happy new #comics day! I couldn't get my comics yesterday because the delivery truck for the store broke down. 😩

From the big 2:

Black Panther starts his new series this week.

Invincible Ironman hits landmark 600th issue!

Old Man Hawkeye with a sweet ass cover!

Star Wars Last Jedi movie adaptation.

Terrifics continues to be...terrific.

The hunt for Wolverine continues with Mystery in Madipoor.

#NCBD

TheBookDream Did you like Mystery in Madripoor? I‘m just finishing up Iceman and Generation X and after those two runs the female characters in Madripoor all seemed exactly. The. Same. Statuesque Barbies with color variants. I was so excited for more Jubilee but this was so dull to me 😕 (edited) 6y
GrilledCheeseSamurai @TheBookDream I was pretty skeptical going in but ended up enjoying it more than I thought I would. 👍 6y

I'm not sure this is a great place to start for a person (like myself) who is new to Black Panther as a character. The artwork is excellent, and I really enjoyed the writing, though it was not what I expected after reading more light-hearted titles, like Ms Marvel. I spent a lot of time trying to piece together what was happening, and I feel like I still missed some chunks. I was certainly invested by the end and will definitely continue reading.

UrsulaMonarch I don't read many comics but I want to check this out since Coates wrote it! And it's on #hoopla ! Stacked! 6y

Today's author spotlight: Ta Nehisi Coates! The 42-year-old Baltimore native and Howard University graduate has been a journalist for The Atlantic, The Village Voice, and Time, and has won the George Polk Award, MacArthur Fellows Genius Grant, and National Book Award for Nonfiction. He is currently heading the Marvel Comics revamp of The Black Panther. His first name taken from an Ancient Egyptian region, Nubia. #AuthorPotpourri #TheMoreYouKnow

Gezemice He is awesome. Black Panther is great (albeit confusing), and Between the Workd and Me should be required reading. 6y

Overall a pick for me. Fair warning that the story is kind of (okay, really) confusing a lot of the time if you're a new Black Panther reader like me but I dig Coates's writing style and the artwork is lush and amazing. I'll probably pursue the rest of the series at some point but I won't be in a rush.

Amazing artwork! A-MA-ZING! I don't know the history of the comic and that felt like a bit of a hinderance in reading this incarnation of the story. Coates is a fantastic writer and made this interesting for me. There is a Fantastic Four comic at the end of this volume that features Black Panther and that was the only thing keeping from finishing this sooner. I recommend this and I'll be looking at the next volume.

alisiakae Wait...Ta-Nehisi Coates is connected to this? Now I really want to read it! 7y

I'm still making this a pick because I think if I make my husband read it he can make it make a little more sense for me. @JenP

Baby panther #Moonshine wanted me to pet him instead of finishing Volume 1. 😄

I've wanted to read this since the series started, but I'm just now diving in. There's 🔮mysticism, 💥battles, and 🕶 political intrigue. And the 🏔 scenery is gorgeous!

It was easy to get a little confused since I'm not too familiar with the character or his story, but revolution seems like a fairly good point to jump in.

Fulfills my B in #ComicsAtoZ. #LitsyAtoZ

I enjoy Coates's journalism and I was excited that he was the writer behind the newest incarnation of Black Panther. So far, I am intrigued by where the series is going and the political infighting in the series hits close to home. If you're familiar with the first incarnation of BP in the Fantastic Four comics of the 60s, this tale reads likes a vindication of the character and doesn't devalue his African-ness. Very well done!
