Stillways: A Memoir
Stillways: A Memoir | Steve Bisley
2 posts | 2 read
A raw, rough, poetic, funny, intensely moving and quite, quite beautiful memoir about a boy from the bush, growing up in Australian in the sixties. From one of Australia's favourite actors comes a classic memoir of an Australian childhood in the sixties. Young Steve was a larrikin, happy-go-lucky, resilient kid, coming of age in a simpler time. Growing up on a farm cut from virgin scrub at the end of a lake, a farm called Stillways, Steve daydreamed about cars and escape. His story is about him heroworshipping his older brother with Brylcreem in his hair; going to school as a young kid with bus money knotted into a hanky and clutching his Globite schoolcase; fighting bullies at school and dreaming about girls; being amazed at the first television in town; remembering where he was when Marilyn Monroe died... But there's a darker thread running through the story: the father who'd take out his frustrations by savagely belting his young children; a struggling mother who'd do anything to protect her kids; a young boy irrevocably marked by his father's anger. Endearing, funny, honest and unflinching-this memoir will become an Australian classic. 'tender and admirable' the Australian 'Poetic, evocative' Sydney Morning Herald 'We know Steve Bisley can act, but can he write? Bloody oath he can. Bisley evokes the Aussie bush so vividly you can smell the eucalypts and the cowpats and the hay and the bushfire smoke as you turn each page. You can hear the creek babbling, the kookas in the trees, the wind rustling the grass. Stillways is disarmingly, sometimes embarrassingly, honest. A book full of joy, anger, regret, hope, lust and love.' Hobart Mercury 'the astonishing thing about this memoir is that it contains so much joy.' Jennifer Byrne. Shortlisted for the 2014 Douglas Stewart Prize for Non-Fiction in the NSW Premier's Literary Awards, the Queensland Literary Awards, and the 2014 National Biography Awards.

Pickpick

This was another book I grabbed from my Mum‘s shelves when I was clearing out her home.

Steve Bisley is an Australian actor. He is hilarious in one of my all time favourite movies, The Big Steal (1990). Others may know him for his role in Mad Max.

I liked this memoir, but it was ‘bitsy‘. A quick, relatively entertaining read that only takes us up to the end of high school, before he‘d even considered acting as a career.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2.

CarolynM Love The Big Steal! Have you seen Acting Class of 1977, the documentary about the students in Bisley's NIDA class (which also included Mel Gibson and Judy Davis)? It's fascinating. 4y
MrsMalaprop No I haven‘t heard of that @CarolynM . Sounds like a ‘must watch‘. Thanks for the tip 🙏. (edited) 4y
Jeg Did you rescue many books from your mums? I would have found it so hard. What a collection she had. 4y
MrsMalaprop @Jeg As you know, there were sooooo many. I took 50 or so. The rest were donated to the RSPCA and Save The Children. 4y

I was expecting to get a call to go into work today to help a colleague, but just heard from my boss that I‘m not needed. So I get to have a leisurely breakfast instead 👏👏👏.

Aside: I may or may not be choosing short books to meet my 2019 reading goals 🤫😁.

#currentlyreading #grateful

CarolynM I've got a copy of this but haven't got around to reading it. I'll be interested to see what you think. 4y
Rissreads 🤣 Love the strategy! So whats the goal? I'm only reading books to finish my #LitsyAtoZ challenge! 4y
MrsMalaprop @rissreads Mine is a very modest ‘one book per week‘ goal. And let‘s just say I have some catching up to do! 4y
