Kingdom Come (New Edition)
Kingdom Come (New Edition) | Mark Waid
14 posts | 33 read | 2 reading | 6 to read
The unforgettable, best-selling miniseries by acclaimed writer Mark Waid and superstar painter Alex Ross returns, with a sketchbook section, annotations on the series, rare art and more! Set just after the dawn of the 21st Century in a world spinning inexorably out of control comes this grim tale of youth versus experience, tradition versus change and what defines a hero. KINGDOM COME is a riveting story pitting the old guard-Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and their peers against a new uncompromising generation and ultimately in the final war against each other to determine nothing less than the future of the planet.

A masterpiece. The questions wrestled with, the stakes at hand, the ART. I'm sure if I had a better handle on the DC line up, I would have grasped a lot more of the cameos from various characters, but, a story that primarily focuses on the big three, Superman, Wonder Woman and Batman, is easy entry for an intermittent comics enthusiast like myself. 1/?

Robotswithpersonality I often find myself feeling disconnected from heroes with superpowers, leaning more towards humans with skills (Batman, Hawkeye, Iron Man), so the 'humans v. gods' quandary set up as a major theme felt like it to got to the heart of what usually narrows my focus or disrupts my interest in superheroes. 2/? 11mo
Robotswithpersonality And the one year later section? Yes, please! 😁 Because the other thing that tends to turn me off comics, particularly those featuring Batman, is how unrelentingly dark they can be. 3/4 11mo
Robotswithpersonality Just, one question, re: The Spectre:
If you're going to spend every instance of depiction finagling a way to cover the dude's junk, WHY design a character nude with an open front cape?! 🤦🏼‍♂️ Do comic book artists enjoy the challenge or curse the character's existence? 4/4

If I had read this in 1996 I would have loved it. Reading it now as an adult who has paid attention for the last few decades this strikes me as a comic book epic for political centrists. I found this to be frustrating. I love comic books but I hate the fact that the majority of the mainstream ones seem to lean to the right. I am stopping myself here before I write anymore but it is what it is and Alex Ross really is an incredible artist.

ljuliel Cold Mountain. Sorry, my opinion is a bit opposite. It was an ok book, but don‘t think it was as good as all the hype at the time said it was. 4y
rwmg I love Antonia Fraser but her books do need time 4y

First of all: can we talk about grumpy, old, pony-tailed Kal-El?
Second of all: can we talk about this gorgeous, multi-layered piece of awesome!? I wasn‘t expecting this to hit me in the feels in so many different ways, but here we are...absolutely worth the read.

TK421 This is my favorite DC comic. Alex Ross' art still blows me away. He painted every panel in this! 5y
AshleyHoss820 @TK421 Rightfully so!! It is phenomenal art! I can‘t believe he painted every panel! That is insane! The panel of the preacher‘s hands in the beginning is frame worthy. 5y
TK421 The character design for the preacher was his late father. 5y
AshleyHoss820 @TK421 I read that at the end! That made it so much better! 5y

I just finished book 3 ( the fartherst shore) of the Earthsea novels! It was sooo good, but I am gonna need to time to digest it before I start on book 4. So I think I'll read some Kingdom Come! A great superman story so far!

#2019Book19
The artwork in this graphic novel was excellent, as I've come to expect from DC. The story, however, kind of dragged. It started out interesting, getting to see the superheroes coming back much older than we usually see them. But after awhile, they were just kind of having the same conversations and fights over and over until the end.

Kingdom Come uses motifs from the Book of Revelation to depict a dystopian future in which superheroes are at war. Waid examines the moral dilemma of using power to enforce peace.

Geez, who does this sound like?

GarthRanzz Isn‘t it funny how much of our pop culture kind of “predicted” how things are now? 6y

I have always been a Marvel over DC comics fan, but I love Kingdom Come. This is one of the great DC stories. Mark Waid at his best writing paired with the amazing skill of Alex Ross. He painted every picture in the entire series. I found this absolute edition on sale several years ago and just had to give it a good home.

For #riotgrams #somethingpretty how about any comic painted by Alex Ross? Pictured is Kingdom Come, kind of the superhero Book of Revelation. Wonder Woman is coming to tempt farm boy Clark Kent out of retirement.
